This is really awesome, so much detail! I wouldn't even know how to get started on one of those legs, haha.. How many hours have you spent on this?

Thats pretty sick! What's the poly count on this bad boy?

about a million only, since it's all fairly simple geometry.
This is one old model though

That's a beast. The legs are immense.
Out of curiosity, how long?

Hey thanks
How long it would be if it was real? Good question actually. I guess its comparable with AT-AT's from star wars.

DO you do each cog manually, or do you have an algorithm/plugin that generates them?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
3dchris89 In reply to Rapid-Green [2009-08-05 19:40:19 +0000 UTC]
What i do is i make one by hand, then i copy it and adjust it where necessary, and then i place it on the model.
Not really any plugins.

The amount of detail in thiis on is simply breathtaking, one would think you were actually building it in reality then scanning the pieces into your cad tool, amzing work.

Haha now you're making me blush a bit. But thanks for the comment.
I have to be honest though, i started with a lot of motivation on the feet and legs, but as i got more into the model (AKA higher) it gets less and less detailed.

Incredible detail I must say! And the style is very cool. Looks like something from the desert or somewere very dry, built from parts of a fallen civilisation. It looks primitive and advanced at the same time.
Will check it closer to figure out how the construction work. Right now it's a bit hard to make out from all those wheels, pistons and wires.

Thanks for the comment
Yeah its a bunch of different parts put together, though there is some logic (at least.. in the legs). There's pistons to help with the impact between all the leg pieces, and there's cushions in the feet. The knee and thigh/shoulder areas have wheels to turn them, but it cant work because the back of the legs dont have those so a big mistake from me there. The body consists of 2 big pieces which are held together with the flexible cables in the middle.
I hope that makes sense i never gave it much thought when i made it.

Yeah, logic can be a pain in the ass when you try to make mechs and other advanced machines.
Well, it adds to the whole scrapyard feel anyway, since those constructions often defy logic anyway.
Hope you get it all to work together. Btw is the legs connectedd to the body yet?

3dchris89 In reply to AimBiZ [2007-08-06 23:31:09 +0000 UTC]
Yeah you got a point
Yup its connected by a very thin and fragile piston and some cables

I see.
Figuring out a valid construction is probably the hardest part of making a mecha. Got started on one with my own design, and my design will be quite the opposite. High-tech and very cyrvy shapes. Having some troubles with the arms right now.

You should upload the concept to dA, so other people can help you. (i wish i had done that back in the days i was creating this mech.)
