I'm more on the teaching side rather than the constructive critic, but I hope I can help here.

Thanks for the invite, this is a really cool idea! One question I'd like to ask, and I'm sorry if this is kind of a dumb question but I just want to be sure before I do anything here. Are members required to give feedback to others before posting their own art? I'd love to get some more constructive comments as a learning artist but I'm not really used to giving out constructive feedback myself, though I'd love to try once in a while. Sorry is this is a stupid question or you get asked this a lot, I just want to be 100% sure so I don't break any rules or anything, thanks

If you'd like to submit to our gallery, yes. We ask members to write a minimum of 200 words on a piece in our gallery as you'll be getting the same in return, so it keeps our system of giving and getting comments running.

Otherwise, you're welcome to submit to our favorites.

do you mean 200 words for each drawing or is that the total amount you need to submit your art ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

3wyl In reply to Rhan-2 [2018-12-12 01:33:39 +0000 UTC]

200 words minimum for every comment made on a piece in the gallery. In return, you'll be able to submit your own piece to the gallery for comments, where you'll also receive over 200 words.

Before i got the invite i though Deviantart was done for and expected to leave this site within a year or so. But i am glad there are still people who care about this site and its artists.

3wyl In reply to Rhan-2 [2018-12-12 01:32:59 +0000 UTC]

I would say there are many, many artists who care about the site and the artists who frequent the site.

New member.

I would like to provide constructive criticism.

Is it agreed by those submitting their artworks that constructive critique will be offered?
It has happened that folks sometimes expect only positive compliments rather than advice.

3wyl In reply to YelZamor [2018-12-12 01:32:27 +0000 UTC]

Everyone who submits to our gallery would like constructive feedback. We're all on the same page regarding that, as, to have their artwork in the gallery, they must have given a constructive comment first.

That said, we all have different interpretations of what constitutes a 'constructive' comment. We encourage our members to give and get advice, but it must be done constructively.

Thank you so much for the invite! I hope I'll live up to standards. I don't usually do this, but I'll try my best to spread some love and constructive criticism! I think this idea was absolutely amazing, as I'd love to get some more criticism myself, and I do like to help others as best as I can! I just have one question, how well articulated do I have to be? I won't go around just writing in what I dub "Tumblr language", but can I be fairly... not personal, but instead casual?

3wyl In reply to RandomArtKid [2018-12-11 01:46:52 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much for your support!

Casual is fine. It's all about the constructive nature of a comment. A person can be casual, and still constructive.

Thank you for the invite, I'm flattered and at the same time nervous about it. I honestly don't know how I was found, but again thank you and I hope I prove worthy enough. I could really use more support for my artwork as I've almost given up doing it but I enjoy it so much. I hope this is a good starting point and what's shown here makes it look so easy.

Thank you so much again, and I hope we call stay inspired.

This is a really nifty idea, and I love how all relevant information is so readily available. Links and all! I'd love to join and start commenting basically right away, though it may take me awhile to get anything posted in my own gallery; I'm trying to get back into the swing of art things after the world's longest hiatus.

Hi new to the group. So to clarify you have to give someone elses work a 200+ feedback comment in order to post in the gallery correct?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

3wyl In reply to Cheddar-Cat [2018-10-18 23:55:48 +0000 UTC]

Yes, that is correct. Please ensure you only comment on pieces in the gallery if you would like to submit there yourself.

You should update this graph, it's quite confusing.

3wyl In reply to CerebrateArt [2018-10-12 13:37:58 +0000 UTC]

That's not a helpful comment. How is it confusing? How should the graph be updated?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CerebrateArt In reply to 3wyl [2018-10-12 15:50:11 +0000 UTC]

The where to start part should be the first thing on sees, so the direction of your flowchart is clear. Therefore, it needs to discern itself by size and color and/or position. There's also no real direction in the flowchart, one is not directed in any way, it's hard to find a clear structure on first sight. Dividing the groups not only by color but positioning them appropriately would help.

Maybe I'll be able to post a proposal later.

3wyl In reply to CerebrateArt [2018-10-12 23:17:15 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the feedback. The Visual Guide was made to be a map, not a flowchart. You say there is 'no real direction', I somewhat disagree, in that a person may take any direction they want. The lines offered a pathway as a suggestion for what people could do, not as a concrete set of directions of what must be done.

That said, I did spend time to improve the Guide, so it should be clearer now.

Gonefromgrace In reply to 3wyl [2018-11-30 03:08:34 +0000 UTC]

Some people might not want to make such a long comment. For example, ordinarily i would only make a comment about 3-5 lines. Also, most people (probably) don’t count each word, or at least I don’t.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

3wyl In reply to Gonefromgrace [2018-11-30 16:20:57 +0000 UTC]

Yes, indeed. We don't expect people to literally count the words - there are online word counters for that. As for not making a long comment, we have other projects where you can comment however you like.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PurplePartyTiger In reply to 3wyl [2018-12-05 19:59:20 +0000 UTC]

I'd like to give long comments like that, but I seem to automatically keep my critiques short and simple, and when I want to extend them I can't think of anything. I've already made my point. So where do I go?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

3wyl In reply to PurplePartyTiger [2018-12-06 00:29:56 +0000 UTC]

There are ways of expanding your points. For example, if you have one point, you can ask yourself 'why' or 'how', for example, why do you think this is significant/important? How do you think the artist has done well, or has achieved something? How do you think they can improve? Consider the strengths, weaknesses, things to improve on, and guide the artist along your reasonings so they can understand your point of view. Constructive Commenting: Guiding QuestionsProjectComment believes every single person on DeviantArt can write a constructive comment, but constructive commenting is not necessarily easy for us. That is why we have produced this article of questions, written with the intention to guide you in your constructive commenting should you need additional support.
Take note that the following should be used as a guide and basic foundation for your comment, not to be used or interpreted as a checklist or minimum required by ProjectComment. The below should help you expand upon your own comment, as we do not accept comments that are itemized lists. What is a Constructive Comment?
