I think this stamp says it all.There is a big difference between using logic to base ideas in, to ignoring logic completely.
So to all the Fantasy and Sci-fi writers out there, give your story the respect and love it deserves and keep things reasonably logical. It's to you and your story's credit that you do this. Using logic makes the story more believable and shows the readers that the author cares about their story.

Yes, even soft sci-fi and fantasy works can suffer from plot holes. And even hard sci-fi can sometimes get things wrong.

the only thing is i can't be a good writer because i'm not good in writing logical stuff
and other thing i belive is Sci-Fi is more difficult to write because you can't just put in random technology,but you have to do research and logically explain how its works,
when i write Sci-Fi themed story,i always stated it as Fantasy because lots of things in story are not scientific fact

i agree to an extent, but logic is subjective and varies from person to person, what isn't logical to you may be logical for another person, logic has no one real definition

I read the first book to see for myself if any of the bad things that I read about it were true. They were. And they weren't even hidden. It was so painfully (and comically) how blatant the mistakes and plot holes were. I was shocked how any woman with pride and sense could see Twilight as a serious and good romance book. At best it could pass for one of those cheep love novels were Fabio stars on the cover.

Exactly. That excuse can only be used so far, like for really young kids. I don't expect them to be logical at that age, so I'll give them a pass. However, once you hit high school (especially senior year), I don't think it's asking too much for people to start raising the bar and at least trying. That's what Writing classes are for, right?

Yup! A good story and author will keep logic in mind. Otherwise the story can get chaotic, confusing and just frustrating to read.

I mean, I'm open to expanding on interpretations of certain ideas/icons (like vampires), but when you twist them to the point where they barley look like the original, then I might have some complaints. Of course, the non-vampires are not the only issue with that series. > >;;

No, the logic in a story doesn't have to be exact. After all, in order to write such story genres, some logic has to give in.
Once you've established the laws for your story then your characters must follow them. However, people can over do that area as well. ^__^;; (i.e. too much power and such).
However, I do think there are certain laws that you cannot ignore. For example: I've read GT stories where the bigger guy is 200 feet tall and yet was able to delicately and successfully put bandages on an injured smaller 2 inch person.
Yeah... nooooooo... that would not be possible. There's no way you can convince me that could be possible without the bigger person doing more harm. -______- It's not logical.

Oh I completely agree with you, I was more thinking in the lines of how logic is good, but that you don't have to overwork yourself in order to get everything working properly. ^^ I mean, trying to explain how a certain spell makes you levitate calls for headaches when you try to get down into every detail. 'is a tough cookie! 8D;;

Ah, yes! I agree. No need to cause your head to implode with every single detail. @____@ The plot points and character personalities (and all other things important to telling the story) is where the focus needs to be. ^__-

Ack the lack of research...! It doesn't take long to read some facts up on Wikipedia before you start plotting. If anything, research helps you understand things better yourself and makes writing all the easier. It's also a great source of inspiration really! People shouldn't be too lazy on that part. >_>;;

Yeah, I totally agree. It's all about being self-consistent. In a fantasy world, you can create your own logic, and that's part of the fun of it. But then, once you make those rules, your characters have to obey them!
I'm trying to remember that quote from Jean Kerr about avant-garde theater. Something like: "You can put a mattress on the stage and call it a piano, and that's fine. Someone can play a tune on it, and that's just fine too. But I expect that nobody will then come along and lie down on the piano."
And, as I keep saying, the more real the world is, the more real the characters will seem as they move through it. Logic counts.

I completely agree. Consistency is very important. Otherwise you're going to frustrate your readers with all the jumping around your characters do. Worlds need rules as do people.

Well, we all contradict ourselves now and then. We're human after all. What's important is that we recognize it and try to do better for next time. Also, be open to constructive criticism (both giving and receiving). If everyone sugar coats their comments and doesn't want to hurt the person's feelings by pointing out something that didn't make sense, how will the writer learn and grow? Comments like, "I love your story. This chapter was so good" May be flattering but they are not helpful.

I try to, I admit I break logical laws at times but I do what I can to keep it making sense.

Well with Fantasy and Sci-fi, some logic laws have to be bent. When you create a world for your characters, you also make laws for those characters and that world to follow. Once you establish those laws, your characters need to follow them.
However, it's all situational. Each story is different. I like to think that it's not the idea that's bad. What makes a story bad is how the author uses words to present the idea.
I've seen people who flat out ignore logic. They either don't realize it (because they're young or naive), or refuse a accept their flaws and try to fix it.
You say you break logic now and then, but what's credible is that you are aware of it and try to improve.
