Description
Template by $zilla774 .Yep. I made a stamp. Never thought I would.
I'm not much of a writer, but I do appreciate writing into which effort was placed and research was done. So, I guess you could say that I appreciate well-informed writing over most other types. >^.-.^<
Research.
It's a spiffy-cool thing.

I currently have a story put on hold for about 6 months, because part of it takes place in a different state which I don't know enough about personally. So I booked myself a week trip there for the end of this year, and then I'll be able to write that part of the story after I have the experience. Field research is always necessary! XD

Many people won't do this and say in their stories that red wolves are hybrids and not real wolves at all. But if you look at a red wolf next to a coywolf, you can see the obvious differences.

It's the same with my Original Project. I have been researching on things from technology to constellations as well as dates on which certain events in my original project falls on. Some of the research have even formed the basis of several characters' traits. Even as I write the entire thing, I am still researching. One bit of research for one of the major settings is based on Medieval Burial practices, basically the backstory for one of the places concerns a woman, a box and a cliff. The type of burial that features in the backstory was very common among the elite, and in some cases, knights in the Medieval era. It's even been mentioned in the first draft by one of the male characters "If I was killed in battle hundreds of years ago, I would be buried all over the place." The character that says this line is merely telling the two blue haired teenage girls information about the place they visit. Researching while writing stories can sometimes give a location an interesting backstory.

60% of the fun in my writing in the research I do! I get to learn the most interesting, random things and whether it's something I can use or not, it was still enjoyable and I always make a note JUST IN CASE.

It's not even just fiction I see this with. I've seen it in scholarly articles, like on here:Β blogs.lt.vt.edu/mackenziecmullβ¦
It claimed that white American women never worked as maids in the old days; only women of color did. This isn't true. My great-great-grandmother, a German-American, was a maid, and so were a few of her daughters, and I don't recall any of them being black. Plenty of European immigrant women worked as maids too. All the maids on the Titanic were white women - the only black people on the ship were a Haitian guy and his two mixed-race daughters in second class. Just because they probably saw black maids in The Help, Mildred Pierce, or some old movie from the 30s doesn't mean that Americans never hired white women to work as maids.

I found a ridiculous example of "not doing your research" in a Harry Potter fanfiction called "Harmony Hippogriff at Hogwarts". The author believes that the UK is a totalitarian state, that we eat "sheep's intestines", that Los Angeles has the best shopping malls, that Ginny Weasley is a tramp, that nobody likes Ron Weasley, that iron is deadly to wizards and hundreds more things. To clarify: The UK is not a dictatorship, not everyone that lives there eat "sheep's intestines", we have a large variety of food, Los Angeles isn't full of shopping malls, Ginny Weasley isn't a tramp, in fact, she is often called pretty, Ron is basically the youngest son and has a lot to live up to, but he is liked, the only two things that can kill wizards is the Killing Spell or old age. To make it worse the person who wrote this fanfiction is a Harry/Hermione Shipper and is quite hypocritical. Most people don't do research before writing fanfiction, as I once found a fanfiction called "Kelly the Roman Warrior" which has the main character being the daughter of Julius Caesar. Romans didn't have kids called "Kelly", in fact, their daughters were named after their fathers, and they didn't have Dollars. Children were banned from fighting in gladiator fights, in fact, most gladiator fights were between criminals, and it was expensive to train up a gladiator due to the fact that if they get killed then the owners would lose money. Just because you are writing fanfiction doesn't mean you don't do some research first.

I absolutely LOVE to research before and during writing. It is so much fun! I buy books on the subjects I'm covering as well as just use some good source material on the 'net. I could never write without doing my research first... it feels clumsy. When I read fiction that is based in a specific realistic time period (or in the world of another author) and I come across discrepancies I often cannot continue to read that particular work. It cheapens the experience for me.

I hate it when people think that they can get away with minimal research. Even when its a fanfiction, you still need to do some damn research.

People on the Internet never seem to do their research.Β Here's one common example. "In the original Cinderella, the stepsisters cut off their feet." The Grimm version of Cinderella was not the original. Perrault's version is over 100 years older than the Grimm version. Disney did not invent the fairy godmother or the pumpkin - those were in the Perrault story! And Disney based their Cinderella on Perrault's version - it's in the credits!
That's nothing compared to the frequent inaccurate portrayals of autism in fiction. In fiction, autistic people will be portrayed like the guy in Rain Man, or as nonverbal, or with savant abilities. They love to portray them as sociopaths who don't care about others and are indifferent to the tragedies in their lives. I'm autistic and I'm not a sociopath, I can talk like a normal person, and I have the mentality of an adult (or at least a teenager). I've been in many bad situations, but my life isn't completely tragic. One rather ridiculous example came from a Babysitters' Club book where Kristy babysat an autistic girl named Susan who displayed every single autistic symptom (impossible - the amount of symptoms can vary but no one can have all of them). Susan is forced to make normal friends - while I do think that autistic people should have non-autistic friends, it's hard for a young child. The kids treat Susan like a freak. Severely autistic children need to be in special schools - a high-functioning autistic child can go to a normal school, but the same cannot be said of a low-functioning autistic child. And we all know that it was Kristy's fault for not approaching this situation properly. A thirteen-year-old is most likely not going to know much about autism, even if they are autistic. The fact that this book was marketed to young girls is quite unfortunate.

Wolves? (facepalm) There's lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, hippos, rhinos, elephants, crocodiles, poisonous snakes, and lots of other dangerous creatures in Africa, and they go with wolves.

Haha, I go insane if I can't research first; I like to write a lot in my head during class, and the other day I was writing about a teenager with leukemia, and was going crazy because the teacher wouldn't let me look up symptoms of leukemia & chemotherapy
my muse was like, brooooooo, write something
but I couldn't because I didn't want to be incorrect.

Yes! I was reading a story and it took place in Alaska. The author made it seem like Alaska was like the South Pole, so desolate and cold. I mean, it is cold. I should know because I've lived here all my life but it is not desolate!! It's rather busy

Most stories I do, don't necessarily need research because most of the stuff I do tend to involve common sense or basic knowledge, but I will admit, that I do have some that I should have done a bit of research on and I'm getting better at doing so

Thank you. I hate it when I read a story with little to now background information. So thank you for making this stamp research is one of the most important steps of the writing process.

Agreed! It's far more rewarding in the end to just do a little bit of reading.
A lot of people seem to give their characters mental illnesses/psychiatric, um, quirks (since I can't think up the right word right now) without doing any research on what the actual symptoms/effects/causes/etc are. I myself am SO glad I decided to do the extra reading for my OC with dissociative identity (aka multiple personality) disorder---its reality is quite different than most people's vague idea of it and is a thousand times more interesting, and I feel my reading on it did worlds of good for my portrayal of said character.

I resurch everything I write! I take months looking up things to make my storys as real life and acurate as a magical fan fiction can get. If my characters play the Cello *which one does* even though I cant play I will spend hours looking up people who do. The instrument's picture who invinted it when it was invented and how it works. So ya Kick ass people who reasurch! you are THE AMAZING WRITERS! ROCK ON!!!

Sometimes I wish people would research what they are ranting or "informing" people about in their journals, maybe I should show them this stamp
I'm constantly linking and quoting things in other artist's journal comments and I feel like a real jerk doing it sometimes... but they don't do it themselves and everyone that reads their journals take what they hear for granted with no reference
(And it applies to so many other things too!)
