Description
*Eggy, when you hurt, your crew hurts,we'll all be here when you need us*Extensive... EXTENSIVE convos with the Great CHaRBini have shaped the origin of young Chafe... he's not evil... he's just... well, mean. XD sometimes.
Don't read on if you're easily upset. this isn't exactly... pretty.
Alice, Rick, Bonnie, Val @ (please don't hit me CHaRB )
Chafe @ me
***
It’s a terrible name if you stop and think about it: “Chafe”. As a verb, it means to irritate, to feel discomfort. Not the first thing that would come to mind when naming a child. It can also mean the state of being vexed…unadulterated rage, if you will. In some sense, it is the most appropriate name for him; perhaps a self-fulfilling prophecy.
His origin, though sadly typical were no less harrowing when one stops to think about it. His mother, Alice did the unforgivable, falling madly in love with a tomcat, Rick. Shortly after the birth of their second child, Valeriano, there was somewhat of a civil war between rival political factions in the city. Almost overnight, the feline-owned factories shut down and species relations were at an all-time low as riots, fires and gangs engulfed the streets. No one keen on cats was safe, and being a bi-special (species-al :dummy ) couple, their house was burglarized, vandalized and doused in graffiti until the family had to take to the streets.
Rick and Alice made plans to move to his home, back in the capital, Felisburg, where all was serene. Unfortunately, they soon found that serenity came at a price: it was a ‘clean zone’. No raccoons allowed. As luck would have it, neither young Bonnie nor Valeriano would ever pass as raccoons and their lack of masks was a genetic miracle. Alice, on the other hand would never have been accepted. Before Rick even had a chance to make a decision, Alice shot him in the shoulder and ran off into the night. Her intentions were good, scare Rick into not pursuing her and raising the children on his own in Felisburg. Seeing no other viable option and having two hungry mouths to feed, Rick did just that, trying his best, and failing, to forget about the only love he would ever have in his life.
For her part, Alice returned to what remained of her city, now, little more than a lawless wasteland of poverty and crime. Shacking up with a mutual outcast, Gunther, the two started a life together, stealing what they could to eke out a living. Neither adjusted well as the city gradually turned civilized again and Gunther was arrested a month before Chafe was born. Chafe was never given a name; Alice had sworn to Gunther she would wait until he was out of prison to name the child. She and the baby would visit him frequently until one day when Chafe was six years old, she got word that there had been a prison riot and she would never see her new husband again.
Alone and confused and with a grudge against all, Alice slowly lost her mind, naming her son Chafe as he was nothing more than an irritation to her, a reminder of the last good thing she’d lost in her life. Some days were worse than others, but by the time he’d hit nine, Chafe decided that it was time to leave and never come back.
A resourceful young kit, Chafe found life on the streets both exciting and educational, finding out whatever he could from whomever was willing to teach him. The locals were as friendly as one could expect, and even moreso in some cases. By the time he was a teenager, Chafe had built a reputation as a one to be feared (or respected depending on who you talked to).
Eventually he came upon a cat with a missing paw shivering under a tree. The two got to talking and Chafe learned he was a runaway, himself. They might have become friends but when the raccoon learned that this wasn’t the first time (nor the last time) he’d run away, he felt a great deal of envy and rage at the selfishness of the kitten worrying parents that loved him whenever he pleased and having a home to actually go to in the first place. He swore to the feline that he would find him every time he was on the streets and beat him to the point where the kitten would NEVER dare run away from home again.
There is still speculation as to whether he has constantly done this out of concern for Sparkz’s well-being, out of jealousy, or a misguided attempt to toughen the cat up for living permanently on the streets.

What a story! I love your writing style - is amazing! Poor Chafe...
And what a brilliant drawing! Chafe looks great. You did an amazing job with his face and postures. The alley background is fantastic. And this trash can looks like a real metal!

Just took a peek in this section...sounds like this guy had life hit him hard early o.o. And he's so envious of Sparkz (lol, I type that and then look at my Avatar x3. Such coincidence~) that he tries to make sure he stays with the family that loves him. It's sweet in a way XD.

xD i only recently found out that your avatar has the same name. XDDD
i was going to say something, but forgot because of work.
technically, Sparkz is Reyssa's nickname, but no one ever calls him Reyssa. i'm not sure anyone living even knows his real name
i'm glad you get that about Chafe.
he's not as sadistic as he seems. XD although his methods are... questionable at best, cruel at worst... but given his limited vocabulary... yeah.
he reminds me of a gangster i once knew... i swear, they can be the kindest, most loyal and thoughtful people you'll ever meet... but then, there's two sides to every coin and...

Lol, I didn't think you'd be the type to be around all that XD.

for some reason i'm the guy that they seem to flock to when they're trying to get 'out of the game'.
or at least that was the case back when i was a normal member of society that didn't go on a ridiculous self-imposed exile. XDDDDDD
every country i lived in, it always seemed to end of that way, too. XD
i guess those odd experiences and the stories i got from them and the very little i saw of their 'other' side kinda molded how my characters came out. .
yeah. Sparkz, Reyssa... worlds apart. it's kinda like when someone has a nickname that seems normal enough to the point where people just assume that's their real name. (i suspect Sonic the Hedgehog has that problem. i mean... who names their kid Sonic? that totally had to come later in life when he started running fast.
or heck, Buster Douglass. I doubt anyone calls him "James" XDDD )

Man he had a hard life. I actually can't blame him in a way for being mad at Sparkz for running away when he had a good life to begin with. Chafe was never able to have that. But I do think he should be nicer to Sparkz though and try to be friends instead of enemies.

i would exactly call Sparkz' life good to begin with, but yeah... it's currently many times better than Chafe's.
he actually IS trying to be nice to Sparkz, but he lacks the basic vocabulary to do so. pretty soon he'll find out how to be nice to him, though. i hope.

colored paper kicks so much ass. once you're bitten byt the bug, it's impossible to go back. XDDDD
drunk from a lack of sleep is actually REAL. i've been all three. i've been punch drunk (getting punched so many times in the head that you're intoxicated. it sucks.) i've been for reals drunk (only one time and that alcohol was literally shoved down my throat. long story and ... yeah. ) and i've been sleep-less drunk (all the time. hence my moniker)
i'd say that sleep-less drunk is the worst kind.

I'm so sorry for not replying to this sooner, things have been...well, you know. Chafe in this picture actually looks a lot like me right now, the expression and all. AWESOME work on the art, I love the way you did the trash can! Something about the way it's outlined, it just looks so cool. Chafe's story....so sad.
The whole part about the specisim (is that a word?
) is actually a great realistic nod to the ugliness of racism, I think. I think Chafe might secretly care about Sparkz?
Then again I'm sure it could just be jealousy too...or a mix of emotions.
Anyways, great work as always! I always love reading your stories!

no apologies to riki. ever.
unless you break into my house and steal my prized pencil case. XD in which case,... XDDD never mind.
anyways, yeah... Sad Chafe... specism (it's not a word, but it makes sense and apparently happens in the real world as well. ) is ugly like racism, but it's not as ugly as (or is as ugly as) class-based warfare, which will ALWAYS go on as long as there is an uneven distribution of resources, genetics, ...everything.
stupid reptilian brain. (literally XDDD)
For his part, Chafe's done surprisingly well, and i still maintain that Chafe really just wants Sparkz to appreciate what he has. he's not a friend to him like, say Socks or Jackfruit... but i think he cares very much for him, but doesn't have the vocabulary or other means to get his point across.
i think what's interesting is the fact that you were able to pick on on that when you drew the followup to their standoff... I would guess that Socks senses that Chafe's intentions are good, but he doesn't seem to have any idea how to articulate what he's trying to say.
but there's definitely an element of malice in there... he's got to have at least some level of jealousy, which is probably why while he's 'teaching' Sparkz lessons, he always seems to take it a bit too far.
gah, i wish i could write a happy story once in awhile. XDDD regardless, thank you, Eggy.

i suppose i'm afraid to write a happy story. afraid that, like when using a butcher knife while cooking, i'll have the urge to cause bad things to happen (seriously has your hand ever started trembling when dicing a potato or something as if it wants you to stab something? maybe i should get that checked out XDDD )
yeah... i'm not exactly sure why Chafe would wanna hang out in a trash can... i'm pretty sure there are far more appropriate places to go.

It's great to see Chafe finally having a concrete backstory of his own!
One that's plenty sad, just like Sparkz's (and this picture) but perfectly suited for his character...I'm also happy to see you not only expanding on feline and raccoon relations, but finding a way to factor it into Chafe's background.
I'm gonna be guessing it'll be playing a part in your upcoming plans in some way (if only because I'm hoping for more of Chafe) but regardless, it was a most pleasant surprise to see that you did this.

and yes, Chafe has a pretty integral part in the entire revamp and we're definitely going in a different direction this time. i don't really see his story so much as sad... i dunno i guess it's probably because i'm getting the 'original Abeogi' feeling for Chafe as i did for Furrball as in, it all works out in the end.

It's only natural that I'd see his story as depressing, but given what we know about him something like that is inevitable, and it definitely makes for a more interesting story. Needless to say I can't wait to see exactly how Chafe factors into the revamp.

Aaaaaahhhh you made Chafe look so cute in the drawing! But he looks so sad and that makes me saaad.
Anyway, I didn't know you would write a story! I have nothing against that, though, because you did an awesome job!
The story is interesting and it's, well, sad. It also explains a lot of things about the characters. Poor Chafe, though... Life hasn't been that great to him. This also proves why I don't really write stories, because I don't know how, but you, you're meant to write (and draw and be awesome), because you're so good at it! You have the talent, maaan, you do.
Also, I'd never hit you. I'm okay with violence, but I'm not okay with hurting you.
Oh, and I'd write a waaay longer comment, but then it would be just me repeating the same again and again, so that's not very useful.

yay, no riki smash! XD
at least now Val and Bonnie don't need hair dye for their masks XDDDD
i still can't seem to decide on whether i feel sorry for Alice, or hate her. (i couldn't really bring myself to state specifics on why Chafe ran away, but it also has something to do with the definition of the word in the verbal sense that involves friction, and we'll have to leave it at that)
it's a real shame about Gunther... but technically i never said he was dead, so he could just be in solitary confinement or something. maybe one day the prison will riot again and he'll get out, or they'll run out of funds and release him to the general population again... or maybe not. :shurg:
i'd say Chafe has made life exactly how he wanted it, given his circumstances and he's more content than any character i have. XDDDD of course, when it comes to Sparkz, i think he's just doing what he feels is right. i don't think he's jealous of Sparkz... i dunno. do you? he probably would have very mixed feelings about meeting Bonnie and Val, and given the Sparkz/Jackfruit connection, i'm pretty sure eventually he'll cross paths with them some day... but i think it's too late for him to really be... civilized.
hahahaha i really don't count this as a story, but more of an extended character profile, but you're still toooooo nice to riki.
and... and... and...

CHaRBini In reply to 8OV [2013-01-05 21:27:52 +0000 UTC]
Haha, yeah, I think that makes their lives at least a bit easier.
Same... I kinda feel sorry for Alice and at the same time... I hate her. I'm not sure if it's a good thing, though.
Gunther is kinda mysterious. Like... Is he dead? Is he alive? Will he ever meet Chafe? It's a mysteryyyy.
Well, it's good if Chafe can enjoy his life, even if it doesn't sound like something that started out well. I guess he isn't that much jealous of Sparkz, but maybe he kinda is. Like... Not much, but... Or... Maybe he's just not jealous. Oh, and that could be interesting, maybe even a bit sad... Like... Chafe meeting Bonnie and Val and then he'd learn that his mother is also the mother of Bonnie and Val and of course there's the connection between Sparkz and Jackfruit and and and
Story or not, I enjoyed reading it. Or does it sound wrong to say 'enjoy' when it's something that's kinda... Sad?
And... Yeah.

8OV In reply to CHaRBini [2013-01-06 08:33:53 +0000 UTC]
Chafe is something of an anomaly i think, in that i doubt he really has a concept of jealousy, like he has no concept of bullying. from my understanding of his time at home, Alice only yelled at him once in awhile and he never had a conversation or really learned to speak. in some ways he's very feral, even though he's not. he's incredibly intelligent, however which is the strange part, but he just doesn't have the internal vocabulary to articulate what it is that he knows... i guess that's hard to explain. XD
i think what i don't like about Alice is that she's... normal. she did what a normal person would do in her circumstances and you want her to be exceptional and to have not given up...but she did, and you just want to hate her for it, but you're almost afraid to because then you stop and think about what would it must have been like to lose everything and think that your child will always see you as a failure. maybe it's possible to hate her and feel bad for her at the same time?
it's possible to enjoy a sad story. XD i mean, i enjoyed "Fists of Fury" and Chen Zen not only loses everything at the end but is publicly executed on top of that.
i'll bet Bonnie remembers Alice, but Val probably wouldn't... i wonder if Bonnie hates Alice. I'll bet she wouldn't accept Chafe as her brother, but Val, on the other hand would probably definitely accept him. but would Chafe accept them? too many questions, never enough answers.

CHaRBini In reply to 8OV [2013-01-06 13:32:29 +0000 UTC]
So, he's kinda feral and he's kinda not feral? That makes sense. And maybe he's very intelligent because... Because... He was born that way!
I mean, it's not impossible, I'm sure some just born more intelligent.
So... Yeah, I kinda get what you're explaining.
I guess that make sense. Hate her and feel bad for her. Yeah. I mean, what happened to her wasn't nice but what she did wasn't that nice either.
Kinda like this one book that I really, really loved as a kid. It was kinda sad, but I loved to read it. It was basically a story of a girl who ran away with her dog because of the war and they went to live with their grandmother. Things were good for a while and then the war got there too and eventually some soldier shot the girl's dog and the girl was scared because she always trusted the dog and because of the dog's death, she felt lonely and depressed. After a while she had to move to another country because of the war continuing again and then she lived her aunt and got a new dog... Wow. I actually remember the story and I'm sure it has been nearly 10 years since I actually read the book. Or maybe I just remember it incorrectly. Anyway, I think that's how it pretty much went.
Probably. I mean, Val must have been so young when that happened so he wouldn't remember Alice very likely. I'm sure Bonnie remembers Alice just fine, though. As for if she hates her... She probably does. At least she can't be very happy with Alice just leaving like that. And yeah, I see it like that too, if she would learn Chafe is related to her, she'd be like "he can't be my brother", while Val would be happy to have a brother and... I'm not sure if Chafe would accept them. I kinda think he'd be confused about the whole thing. Like... He's not sure if he should accept them or not.
