Description The futility of our struggle blossomed briefly in my awareness

Astrophysics, screw your astrophysics. What, did you expect me to make Combine Dyson sphere a sphere?
As Philip says, "Finishing Half-Life is just the beginning!" and it is. I am exceptionally happy and that's all I want to say.

Edit: ok, it seems there are a bit too many pictures with dyson spheres literally hugging star surfaces and I'll have to elaborate: this here is a perfectly normal-sized sun, as it's supposed to be
Have a nice time imagining the scale.

In the light of some recent happenings - you can't use it in one of *those* projects without contacting me first. Send a note here on DA or find me at VCC discord, but spare me from having to stumble upon someone making things out of my stuff purely by accident.

thing is, what would the ship even do to the dyson sphere? what made alyx gordon think it would do any damage?

Great overestimation of humanity's abilities, underestimation of Combine's and hope+anger.
Considering how many people go "okay, so we have Epistle 3, BUT WHAT IF borealis actually blew up combine overworld and happy ending?", concept of futility is not easily grasped until it hits you directly in the face.

i personally believe since the borealis was constantly teleporting multiple places and TIMES and once it would probably screw up the sun of the dyson sphere (for example in stargate tv show they throw a stargate into a sun with it open to a black hole on the other side, so its sucking the sun out through the gate, destabilizing the sun eventually going supernova).

I was planning on making a piece based on the recent HL3 story leaks myself, but it looks like you beat me to is. Kudos to you, and well done with this.

Ahem, not a leak (literally just gifted by Marc to fans) and not HL3 but Ep3 (I know no one makes a difference anymore, but there is).
Anyway, there's lots of things decribed there, and I only depicted one of them and only in one possible way. You shouldn't see it as a reason to not make something yourself.

I wasn't not going to make anything, I was just complimenting you since I didn't expect anyone to make art based of Marc's piece. (By the way, I really do like this a lot)

When staring into the combine portal at the end of HL2, seeing the several citadels inside it, I always imagined a world vastly different from our own. Gravity might work differently, producing planets in other shapes than spheres. Xen has physics that makes no sense to us, and the combine technically has to reside in another dimension because otherwise they couldn't travel to ours.
I was actually disappointed over the mention of a dyson sphere in Epistle 3 because it's a concept I can comprehend. There is so much about the combine advisors that reach far beyond our capability of understanding, and in my opinion it should remain that way even after the conclusion in order to preserve their enigma.
In my opinion it should have been referred to as "Something huge and otherworldly, which I could only assume was their universe's equivalent of a dyson sphere. In our universe it would have taken the shape of a sphere, but in this one gravity most likely works differently."
This leaves it open for the reader's own interpretation and preserves the mystery.
Of all the artwork I've seen of this scene, yours is by far the best. It captures a glimpse of a universe where a sphere shaped dyson...shape is not the most efficient one for capturing the star's energy (Star is still round though, but it could be disk-shaped for all we know) You made some thinking outside the box, and came up with something that feels completely alien. Amazing work!

Well, maybe it's a stack of 10 or more four-dimensional, completely solid spheres inside each other (for maximum energy capture), and human eye can only see parts of them. Who knows? And maybe not, and maybe something else.
Thanks for comment.
