Description
The Command Sergeant Major of my Unit, someone who I consider to one of the greatest leaders I've ever met. In many ways I consider him my mentor.Photo taken during a BlackHawk flight in Northern Iraq.
The title "Everyday's a Challenge" is there because its his favorite quote.
The doors of the blackhawk are open, 'cause it was about 118 F that day.

25SEPT05 I went back and looked at the cropping of the photo after a reading a comment from =xxacidic-illusionsxx This new photo might work a little bit better.
***********
01OCT05 After taking some advice from the comments I went back and resized the photo for dA down to 1200 x 800.

Nice shot....captured a real look of concentration, and the white of the outside contrasts nicely against the gloom of the inside of the chopper.

from a content point of view i dig this - its the sort of slice of life (or in your case a rather different life) shot which works so damn well. theres a quietness about this guy which comes through strongly
technically this photo could be improved. firstly a resize before posting is i think a good idea - i run at 1600 by 1200 which is bigger than most people and i still had to scroll quite a bit to appreciate this. secondly the image could really be a lot sharper then this - and upping your ISO may help to give you a slighter faster shutter that eliminates the camera shake.

I took your advice and sized it down. Now most people can view it fully with excessive scrolling. My biggest problem taking the photos on the blackhawk is movement. Not only is there the vibration of the engines, the movement of the aircraft, but also the doors were open so there was a lot of wind and I had trouble keeping the camera steady. Which is (as you pointed) the photo is not crystal clear. If I get a chance next time I fly I'll up the ISO and see what happens. Thanks for the advice.

It is a terrific 'this day and age' picture. I like the clarity and the feeling....he is in control, is calm, is strong. It must be a nightmare to wear all that gear in that kind of heat. The only problem I have with the photo is the size. Takes a lot of scrolling.

That would be great. Kind of lose the impact with scrolling

He looks like he's staring off into space, lost in though. I like how we can see the open door yet not what it looks out onto. It's a good picture and it's nice to see something from you!

Yeah, I've been out of the dA world lately... so busy. Plus the opportunities to catch great photographs are slim because I'm spending more time behind the desk instead of out in the dirt.

i like the feeling of this and the meaning behind it....
however, i think that if you didnt cut off the feet it'd be better. i know that its hard to take pictures during situations like those since you cant really command anyone to do anything for your camera
but keep in mind that,
when taking a picture, try not to cut off half the head of the hand or the feet!

It would have to been nice to include the feet, but there are two problems... one, I'm only like 3 feet away and I can't get me lense to zoom out that much, and the other is the seats across from each other are only 2 feet apart, so what I did crop out of the photo was the guy's knees across from him... But you're right, would have been great if I could have got the photo from the deck up.
