Description There's a firearm out there to suit everyone's tastes.  Shooting in the deserts near Fort Irwin again.  From top to bottom are, BushMaster ACR (mine), friend's AK-47 Polish Underfolder, and another friend's AR-15 with MagPul MOE furniture.

If anyone's curious about the weird plastic pistol grap wraps, they are to prevent creating an 'assault weapon'.  The state of California is not so firearm friendly, and has many laws restricting how certain weapons may be configured.

The AR-15 below has a bullet button, so it does not need the grip wrap.

Wish I had the luxury of moving.  I will one day eventually, but school and family is what's keeping me here.

It must be so nice to be able to own suppressors (with a properly filled out ATF tax stamp of course) and standard size magazines.

yeah, Suppressors you CAN get here, I myself have not got one for myself because I like to buy now and get it now, with the Suppressor, and any SBR, you have to pay now and wait 6 months to get the paperwork returned so you can take possession. I'll do it eventually, just have not as of yet ^^

Melted plastic, jamming, and terrible rounds.
And an AK to make any of it worth while.

What do you mean?

The problems with the rifles?  You do realize an ACR has an alloy upper right?  Even with a polymer handguard (ACR Basic), with a cyclic rate of fire, it would never melt.

The initial back of ACRs were known to have some issues with FTF and peening.  That's all fixed now.  Most newly introduced firearms all have small setbacks, and shouldn't deter you from trying a platform out.

As an 11B I had the chance to try many rifles, and the ACR is an excellent platform, that I think will be the next major one, unless some innovative weapon is introduced to the infantryman of this era.

When stressed, most plastic shields start to melt before wood ones catch fire, so that's a non-starter for me.

I hope to God we never consider the ACR as an actual infantry rifle (which we won't, no actual militaries are really interested in it), with its short "standard" barrel, lack of built-in iron sights and sheer magpul-ly-ness.
 *shudder*
I'd rather issue pre-Soviet Mosins at that rate.

You're talking about cyclic rate for extended periods of time.  No rifleman would be shooting at cyclic rate after the first 1-5 minutes in a firefight, excluding SAW gunners and a 240 team.  Mainly to conserve ammo.  The barrel life would deteriorate before a polymer handguard would start to melt.

There's a reason why a SAW/240 gunners sometimes carries two barrels.  To add, no sane shooter would be dumping 200 round drums constantly in cyclic rate.  Maybe some stress test videos on YouTube, or a throwaway AK.

Iron sights aren't a problem as there are stockpiles of the KAC sights the Army has.   I doubt MBUS would ever be considered as a combat sight system because of polymer, and the sight picture is horrible.

The words, short, standard, and barrel don't mix at all.  16" is standard but far from short.

During my time in service though, I've only ever shot M855 green tip 62Gr. or similar variant, which is actually great for the twist rate the ACR barrel has.

Very few occasions have I heard the army issuing 77 Gr.  BTHP Sierra Matchking projectiles.  Maybe for high-speed people.

You will learn all these things most likely if you signed as a 0311 MOS when you're in MCRD.  Unless you've actually have had a great deal of time handling this platform, I strongly recommend you don't jump into conclusions about it.  Reading about initial problems online don't count.

That being said, the ACR definitely still needs corrections and Bushmaster is a failure of a company to deliver the promised caliber changing bolts and different length barrels.  Nor do I think it's one of the greatest rifles ever, but there is a lot of room for improvement.

I own almost every major rifle platform with the exception of a IWI Tavor, Galil variant, FAMAS variant, FAL variant, and a G3 variant.  I can tell you the ACR does keep up.  Whether or not you're an avid / enthusiast shooter or a keyboard warrior that doesn't have much trigger time, I don't know.

YMMV and I hope you have fun at MEPS and MCRD.

:/ 5.56 out of anything less than a 20inch barrel isn't worth much, though I haven't seen any test on 16inch.
I'd have to see if it can fragment 5.56 before I'd touch it, and Marine testing showed the 20inch only frags between up to about 100 yards, so I'd be skeptical about it.
It'd be kinda sketchy since they found the 14.5inch barrels can't fragment at any range, 16inch is rather suspect.

That being said, I might be interested in the 6.8 version, but again, the magpul-ly-ness is a major pucker-factor.
And of course, Bushmaster can't really get their shit together...
