Description
Ok, since people seem to like the way I use colour pencils so much here goes a little tutorial!Just as I promised!
PLEASE READ:
- IF YOU EVER RESORT TO THIS TUTORIAL OR USE TIPS FROM IT LET ME KNOW! ^^ I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE RESULTS!
- Sorry for the poor quality of the photos...
- This is just a SUGGESTION! I don't really know how to use pencils properly: this is just merely stuff I've learned from my own personal experience using this medium and I'm completely self-taught!

Cool! What would be the bast paper to use? All I have is printer paper.....I've tried using a sketchbook but it wasn't the best quality....

i think it's best to find a paper that is a little bit thicker and not as glossy as printer paper, but also that doesn't have too much texture so that the picture doesn't look grainy.

Thanks so much, this was great!
Is it the quality of my pencils or something? I'm using Faber Castell and it looks so graining, it's no where as smooth as you'rs.

hummm faber castell is a very good brand so i don't think that is it. try sharpening your pencils more, with a sharper edge i think they tend to grain less. you can also try different types of paper. but i don't think it's the pencils 'cos that a great brand

This is great! Thanks so much for the tutorial. I'm a fan of colour pencils myself. However, the paper that you used, was it hot-pressed paper? From the way you describe it, it sounds like hot-pressed. I tried using cold-pressed paper before, and i found that the textures really got in the way.. Well, thanks again

thank you soo much for this <333 your explanation was very clear, i think i can start colouring them and stop making black layers/shades xD but first i need to learn inking ._. i have a question though,
sometime when drawing it with pencils, and got erased.. when i coloured that part, there'll be a line (white) that cant be coloured D: maybe because when i draw it, i put a lot of pressure on it. D: do you know how to avoid/ prevent this from happening? >.<;; any tips? it will look super ugly if it happens TT_TT

try doing the piece on a first piece of paper, and when you completely happy wth the result trace it to a new clean sheet, that way all the mistakes are left on the old sheet and you can do a nice clean coloring

umm in terms of skin colouring it's always dificult to say because it really depends on the background and the mood you wand to give it. but some nice neutral colours your be an eggshel sort of colour, a light pink, a light brown, and maybe some light reds and chocolate browns for blushes and darker parts
hope it helps!

Browns I don't know why. But I was so skeptical about using browns on the skin. But you proved me wrong after reading this tutorial. I find it very informative on what you posted.
I'll take it to heart.

hi, I work with caran d' Ache and they are fine. I also use Faber Castel. I would like to ask you these 2 questions: first I hear from many people that the best are prismacolour but they are not sold in Greece so I could try them. If you have tried them are they better? or ok they are fine but not much different? cause I am thinking to order but it costs a lot. and second: your colours look so bright. My colours are not bright. Is somethink you do?
sorry for writing so much.

A-Xofia In reply to KaterinaY [2010-08-09 10:41:44 +0000 UTC]
no prob
those are all great brands. and the is no use spending a LOT of money on a brand because in this case i don't think it will make that much of a difference, since those are all amazing brands.
my advice would be to go with what you've got and if would still what to try other brands later on that's ok, but i don't think it will make a big change.
the brightness is, i guess, something that comes along with the process: the more confident you are using the pencils, the stronger your stokes are gonna be and the brighter they become.
one little tip though could be that if you want to make the colors pop out more after completing the piece you could try adding a little bit of markers on top. markers that are the same color as the colors in pencil under. because markers are brighter they will make the pencils under pop out more, just be careful to not cover up all the wonderful pencil work, just some little markers splashes here and there.
i didn't use that technique here in the piece for this tutorial. but i used it in some pieces like this one:[link] (i used some yellow markers on the sunflowers to pop out more, and some brown in the hair to make it look darker)
hope that helps ^^

Hi, I just discovered your amazing tutorial and I have a question...How do you determine the light source when coloring? =/ Hope you'll be able to answer.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
A-Xofia In reply to sorrowzombie [2010-08-08 19:30:40 +0000 UTC]
that depends on the effect you are going for if it's a pic from your imagination ( i like the light coming from the left if it's a random pic but that's up to you. if you are drawing from real life try looking at the shadows on the surface on which the object stands to determine where the light source is
