Description
The Duel of Morgoth and Fingolfin”Then Morgoth hurled aloft Grond, the Hammer of the Underworld, and swung it down like a bolt of thunder. But Fingolfin sprang aside, and Grond rent a mighty pit in the earth, whence smoke and fire darted. Many times Morgoth essayed to smite him, and each time Fingolfin leaped away, as a lightning shoots from under a dark cloud; and he wounded Morgoth with seven wounds, and seven times Morgoth gave a cry of anguish, whereat the hosts of Angband fell upon their faces in dismay, and the cries echoed in the Northlands.”
- J. R. R. Tolkien: The Silmarillion, chapter 18: Of the Ruin of Beleriand and the Fall of Fingolfin
This is the second incarnation of this Silmarillion illustration.. sepia tone with a brown paper background done in Photoshop (Thank you for the idea and help, Ana !
---
One of the most memorable moments from the Silmarillion and one of my favourites, even if reading it always makes me sad..
While making these Tolkien illustrations I don’t want to see any references but rather delve into my mind and try to find my own view.. still, it’s plain to see I’m heavily influenced by everything I’ve seen before.. In particular, I remember having a Tolkien calendar illustrated by Ted Naismith (or something like that) a long time ago (might’ve been the calendar of the centenary year of ’92, but can’t remberber for certain. There’s this image of Fingolfin’s challenge and Morgoth is wearing a shirt that’s made of something that lookes like black dragonscales. I haven’t seen the pic in years, and I didn’t want to look it up now.. but that’s something that my mind goes back to every time I think of this scene.
So I think my Morgoth owes a lot to that painting. I wanted to draw his face, because I think just a helmet or something would be too anonymous and could not really contain the true evil he characterises. I picture him as a kind of a giant vampire lord with both elven and orcish features. His equipment I wanted to make fitting for his self-proclaimed status as the King of the World – finely decorated but looking kind of evil.. like I really wanted Grond to look like something that’s bound to hurt if you get in it’s path!
Fingolfin wears what I imagine elven armour looked like: light, intricate plate over a fine scale mail haubergon.

Good job mate! Two things I really like about your rendition:
I - You gave Morgoth somewhat brutish, savage features. His face and arms look rough, the open mouth makes him look all too human. His physicality is much closer to that of a laborer weary and diminished.
II - Morgoth's eyes and the light of the silmarils resemble each other. A single source of light, very thoughtful and artistic concept.
That is how I see the drawing. Well done!
P.S. The Fall of Fingolfin is one of my favorite stories as well.

I love that your Morgoth doesn't look like a giant version of Sauron from the movies. Great work!!!

One of the best I've seen. Ringil is especially good!
If there had been another Fingolfin- say, his twin brother- that would have been the end of Morgoth!
But didn't Fingolfin give Morgoth EIGHT wounds, if you count that last one as he was dying?

Wow - amazing drawing! I always found this scene so sad to read. You did a great job I'm really frightened of Grond, I love Fingolfin's sword and the Silmaril in Morgoth's crown are stunning
And the details and movements and...
I could go on like that.

There you got me.I read the Silmarillion and thouhgt that I HAD to draw something referring to it(especially teased by the golden dragon whose name I just forgot),but I never had the idea to check dA for it.
I should´ve known there would be so much about it!
And this work one of the best I´ve seen so far. It´s very inspiring and motivating to me ,so thank you for this!
Although I think it´s a bit unrealistic..the pic would be plain white if capturing the Silmaril realistic, wouldn´t it

Hey, i love this picture. I'm extremely new to the books. I haven't even read them yet, i've just been on wikipedia for the last week reading everything i can about the series. I've sat on my computer through class just reading and not taking any notes.
Sweet pic.

I think it's interesting that you took the approach of giving Morgoth a face. Tolkien is generally very vague on how his bad guys look, I think because the unknown is a little more frightening. So more often than not, we have no idea what Sauron, or Morgoth really look like. Mayhaps this is even still only one form of Morgoth, as the Valor had often taken many forms, and different names.

It's the best duel of Morgoth and Fingolfin I've seen yet, but I have one problem with it. In the Silmarillion Morgoth only has two silmarils on his crown.

i have one critics to this picture, i think morgoth was cladded in full plate, i dont think his face was to be seen, but nevertheless, great work .

Great job however, from a glance , i almost can't see Fingolfin.By the way Morgoth looks awesome, its just that Fingolfin can be mistaken for the environment.Maybe a darker outline or different color can help to distinguish the smaller warrior.

One complain - Why does Morgoth have a shield that doesen't really protects him from Fingolfin's or anyones sword?
I know he's a leader, and should have a banner of a sort, but he's too big to need a shield.

Well, I suppose we'd need to ask the Professor that question.. The only thing Morgoth did with his shield was to push Fingolfin to the ground three times (so he seemed to be better at hitting him with his shield than his hammer...).

Too late for that i'm afraid...
Yeah, the shield was bigger i guess
Though i think Melkor should be illustrated with a two-handed hammer, instead of a shield, or a small buckler, even though Tolkien did mention a shield.
OR
Make the damn thing (Hammer) smaller, hatchet sized

Hahahahaha
Yeah, that had to be terrifying - Morgoth the Great with his little, pink hammer.
On the other hand though, i guess it still would be bigger than Fingolfin. Hmmm...
