Description A Headshot of a large predator from the Birrin world.

Upper eyestalks contain eyes and ears, lower contain eyes and sensory tentacles.

Most creatures related to the Birrin have 4 'lips' covering their jaws. However in this case the upper lip has evolved into a head shield which helps the creature push through dense forest. The blue membrane is used for display and can be retracted under a shield when not in use.

The animal hunts like a large heron, snatching smaller prey by shooting forward its long neck. It swallows most food whole, or by tearing it apart with its smaller inner jaws and toothed tongues.

Mostly invertebrates like a worm called Eunice, which has huge jaws, and dinosaurs like T Rex.

Also The beings from the Predator movies have 4 jaws.
Your creatures are marvelous!

Auger-Affect In reply to ??? [2011-01-04 05:43:41 +0000 UTC]

Love the detail in this. This looks like something that shares taxonomic relation to the Biirin sentients, like some sort of peer pre-sentient apex predator (ie: a baboon to a human, or more distantly a bear to a human).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Abiogenisis In reply to Auger-Affect [2011-01-05 03:59:54 +0000 UTC]

You are correct. They are related to the Birrin, and much larger. However they are highly intelligent, approaching Birrin level, and they have complex interactions with Birrin societies.

Auger-Affect In reply to Abiogenisis [2011-01-07 21:49:27 +0000 UTC]

Now that's a whole extra dimension of interesting you've piled on there. Any plans to depict such interactions? By complex do you mean dumpster diving racoons/bears etc or something else? This sounds pretty neat.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Abiogenisis In reply to Auger-Affect [2011-01-09 03:34:48 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes I will depict these interactions.

Interactions include drug trade, slave or paid labor, basic treaties and food product trade.

Are there any parasites for the residents of this alien world? Or rat equivalent? Did anything become genophage like a virus, or maybe a variance in microbiology?

Do the Birrin (and this thing, by extension) by any chance have scallop-type "mirror eyes" ?

kecen [2010-02-02 01:14:42 +0000 UTC]

How similar in behaviour is this creature to the Birrin? The resemblance is not remarkable, considering they're related...

The detailing on this is remarkable, as always. The outlines are crisp, like a National Geographic spread

Abiogenisis In reply to kecen [2010-02-02 08:51:36 +0000 UTC]

This species is about twice as smart as a gorilla, and they have some basic treaties with the Birrin to prevent the two species from killing each other.

Demmmmy [2010-01-30 20:56:03 +0000 UTC]

This was totally worth the wait. I love the colours and skin pattern. The 'depth' of the closest beak was a good point made, though.
The two big black tooth things look to me like they retract into that socket when the mouth closes. I must say that the mouth is quite busy and the lower lip looks a little confusing where the tooth thing meets it, looks like it goes behind it. Then again, it's your design so maybe thats what happens.
Your work is inspiring and I can't wait for more.

Those jaws of this critter reminded a lot like a Swiss Army knife, so many tools and blades to hold, saw, and cut its prey. Very impressive!

I have to agree with Moai's crit on the left (it's right) 'lip'. The tip of it needs to be darkened to give it a sense that the beak-like lip is nearer towards the viewers.

Oh my god, yes! I've been hoping and waiting to see another alien from this world, and my hopes have been answered and then some. Fantastic, fantastic creature. It's my favorite one you've uploaded yet. My only complaint is that its right lateral jaw/lip, the one closer to us, does not feel like its projecting towards us in space as much as it should. Perhaps putting a stronger highlight on it would work, or darkening the flesh behind it, would help with that.

What does its body look like?
