This is so amazing! The Birrin is lovely, as always, but the Sardu is absolutely magnificent... I'm getting chills! The underwater seascape is really well done... I can't imagine how it was done if it's not a photo... but it looks fully painted.

I am in awe... once again.

The seascape is a combination of hand painted and textures from Mayangs' site, most useful

Just wondering, is there a grand master plan for this alien world? Like pictures pave way to some more condensed thing, like a book, or comic, or game, or...?

Wow. Sardu is really beautiful. And its hunting method seems quite scarry, especially when this "little" birrin stay so close to it. My first thought when i saw this drawing was: "Pity it has too small resolution for desktop wallpaper"

How inteligent is sardu? Like a fish, or rather a dolphin?

You need to make a book about the Birrin homeworld, and explain it in a documentary fashion. Your world and its individual species are so well explained that I would be surprised if someone didn't want to use your designs for something like a movie!

I love the world you are creating! Is there any chance of you making a map of the Birrin homeworld? Also, does the planet have a name in the Birrin language?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Abiogenisis In reply to burningmonk [2012-01-05 07:36:22 +0000 UTC]

The planet has many names as the birrin have thousands of languages

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

burningmonk In reply to Abiogenisis [2012-01-05 08:59:41 +0000 UTC]

I love how you think about your world. It takes a lot of work to make a real living, breathing world in your imagination and then actually execute the work that brings that vision to others. In so much SF a planet has one race, with one language, and sometimes even one environment. But you gave me a really good answer in that there are many languages on a real planet, as there are many cultures, just like on earth. But, what language is 'birrin' in, or 'sardu' for that matter? Is there a lingua franca on their planet, much like English is on Earth? Also, many human languages, despite using a different word, refer to Earth as 'earth' 'ziemia' (Polish) '地球' pr. chikyuu (Japanese), etc. These three examples all refer to the ground, or the earth. Despite language differences, is there some symbol that generally refers to their planet?

Anyway, you don't have to answer any of my questions. As a long time science fiction fan, I just love thinking about this kind of stuff. And I really love the world you have created through your work! Keep it up!

Abiogenisis In reply to burningmonk [2012-01-05 09:34:06 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the response.

Birrin and Sardu are anglicised versions of birrin pronounciation. They do have a common trade language or two and it is these I draw the words from, however they are very approximate because birrin voices are very different to ours due to their anatomy. They do not use the word earth as in soil, but generally ship. They saw their world as a ship in many cultures.

BrentOGara In reply to Abiogenisis [2012-01-05 10:58:51 +0000 UTC]

You see, that is how you come up with a really alien psychology... you forget the human bias and take a look at the world with new eyes! Every extant human culture I know of calls themselves "the people" and calls the Earth "dirt/soil"... and "the world" just refers to the parts they know about.

But you go and free yourself from all that while still keeping true to the biological/physical necessities and you come up with this totally awesome stuff.

I really love the totemic look of the sardu. This might, in fact, be my favorite of all your creature designs .

Bioelectricity is usually generated by rows of muscle blocks. Why are those present in the jaws? Erectile teeth?

The tiny thumbnail made this creature look like a submersible B-1 bomber. A hot rod space yacht based on the sardu design would look really sleek and awesome.
