Thanks Photoshop CS2 and a Wacom Tablet. Adjust the settings for the brush (set the shape dynamics and other dynamics to pen pressure) and play with the opacity and flow percentages to get smooth transitions.

thanks when you say airbrushed, do you mean digital painting? i used photoshop and a tablet to draw on. you can watch the time lapse of it from the link in the comments
