Description

I rise from the grave once again.

I've been pretty busy with music (and college) while I was away.

So now for something to show for it: a soundfont that I've been working on for about a year and a half.

This one is comprised of old, modified, and completely new instruments using emulated sound hardware from the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. The primary aim was to get a more acoustic sound out of FM (including drums) and to keep "samples" to a minimum.

It was made from DefleMask, and I've built up a good amount of experience using it myself since the last time I've posted a deviation about it.

Of course, I couldn't keep it perfectly accurate to the original hardware's limitations since the midi files themselves decide how many instruments at a time are used.

This was initially made to be used with Sonic Robo Blast 2's MIDI soundtrack, although the soundfont's scope expanded beyond that after testing it with countless midis.

Using this will require you to find software that can apply this soundfont with midis. If you want to use what I've tested this with (perhaps even to listen to midis in general), then VirtualMIDISynth from CoolSoft is where to look (and don't worry about directions, it'll guide you).

As for getting it to work in SRB2: put it in its "sf2" folder, go to the game's advanced sound settings, set the MIDI player to "Fluidsynth" and then type the soundfont name in the file line right below it (it's case-sensitive and filetype-sensitive by the way). From there, the midis will play with SEGAudio's instruments instead and you can play the game with it (do check the volume in case it gets loud).

(Just in case: this isn't actually affiliated with SEGA, and I'm not looking for profits for this either. I just wanted to try something out.)

Enough essay writing, feel free to use this soundfont at your own leisure.

(Also, I did the whole advertising thing on the cart because I felt like doing it.)

UPDATE 4/2/22: I've just realized that this isn't downloadable for anyone who isn't a registered DA user, so I've provided an alternate way to get it: musical-artifacts.com/artifact…

UPDATE 4/3/22: Someone made a cover using my soundfont! Go check it out here: McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure - Stage 3: Sunken Ship by John Tay

UPDATE 5/12/22: Found another cover using my soundfont! Here it is: Sonic Advance 2 - Egg Utopia Act 2 by Uukoo
