Description I decided to do both a mucha-esque version and one with a full background,the mucha-styled coming first.Though i'm not sure it looks anything close to art nouveau style now.

I'm not really pleased as some details (especially on the character) were lost with the inking but i hope that with colour it wont be noticeable.

Here's the sketch -> [link]

Ref used -> [link] by

And here is a coloured version by dear friend -> [link]

Galadriel is of course (c) JRR Tolkien

This is simply gorgeous. I was wondering if I could make this drawing into an embroidery for a Tolkien themed quilt I'm making? I'd like to post a photo of it to Tumblr and Word Press when I'm done, but I'll link back to you as the original artist. I'm using patterns from fandominstitches.com and some other quilting sites, as well as blocks I'm creating. I totally understand if you say no, and I appreciate you considering it whichever your decision.

This is very pretty. I like this scene from TLOTR (well if it's not a particular scene, I like this part of the book) and I've often tried to visualize and draw it to do it justice.

I would say she, Galadriel, has a lovely winnowy style, not very reminiscent of Mucha (his figure style is more rounded and curvy) but I do see the art nouveau influence with in the many graceful lines.

Thank you very much!I understand your point,i now see that too..Could it be because i always imagined her tall and slender and i probably wasn't able to translate that in Mucha's style?Or maybe because i tried to mix the art nouveau influences with my own?I hadn't noticed/thought of this before really..
But in any case,i'm glad if you can see something art-nouveau-like in other parts of the drawing.
Thanks again for your comment!

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I think you should go with your tall slender style and see how that develops, if that is a natural trait in your artwork, and I think the art nouveau influence can be valuable, though remember to be looking at a lot of styles so you won't get "boxed in" visually. Celtic art might be a nice resource for you, I think it was an influence for art nouveau itself. Japanese woodblock prints also may give you ideas for compositional proportions. But the point is to look look look, always be learning from all the artwork you see, from any style period, it all has things to teach, and some artwork will be more compatible with you than others, while some unexpected jewel of a painting, or artist, will suddenly impart you with a revelation of form, color, or composition, from a totally unexpected source. I hope this is helpful to you, and keep up your good work.

I almost liked the sketch better, because for instance, the face holds its own better in the sketch than with the inked, I think...but:
Your backgrounds and nouveau borders are amazing! I love the mirror in there, great details. And the forest background...
Great job!

Oh,i understand your point.
I get that a lot,when i add those frames i so like,the character tends to get lost in them..I'll have to work this out.
Thanks for your comment as always and i appreciate opinions and suggestions.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

2ndtoOne In reply to Achen089 [2009-09-27 23:38:23 +0000 UTC]

Well, no I don't think it's that the character gets lost in the frame, I just think that with everything inked, and the face not being inked, it's just really light compared to everything else.
But I've tried inking facial features before, and it can be pretty tough, I know...
You're welcome!

Achen089 In reply to 2ndtoOne [2009-09-29 19:29:51 +0000 UTC]

Oh,that was just because i didn't/haven't inked it yet! Haha
For the reason you mentioned exactly,i always leave the face for the end,kind of avoiding to get there..

I really love your line work here. It's both delicate & powerful. Very very nice work. Are you planning to color this? That would be neat too - but either way, you've done fantastic work here.

Oh yes,i'm colouring it though at the moment i'm troubled and stuck with the choice of colours.Especially the ones of her dress.I want something powerful and elegant,just as you mentioned,and nothing common-like for Galadriel.And just white makes her look a bit like Eowyn.Any suggestions?

Thanks for your comment and fave anyway!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChazKemp In reply to Achen089 [2009-03-04 15:21:43 +0000 UTC]

Well this is just a suggestion mind you - but since the background is going to be in greens & browns (forest-like), you may want to consider putting her in a nice contrasting color. Other elves want to blend into the scenery because they want to surprise invaders and what-not. Galadriel doesn't need to blend in - she's the queen and extremely powerful & she's perfectly happy to stand out & be the regal monarch that she is.

So for her dress may I suggest a nice darker shade or purple or an autumn orange. It would make her stand out, no one would expect her to be in those colors & they would compliment the green & brown background nicely. Again tho, just a humble suggestion. I'd love to see it when you're done because either way I know you'll do a great job with it.

Oh dear!That was quite a surprising idea/suggestion!No one would expect to see her in those clothes,i'm sure.

Though i had thought of colouring the forest..green-blue-ish..as in night,something like [link] or [link] so i guess the purple would fit better,though then i'd be copying John Howe and..oh,that's so frustrating..!!lol

But thanks for the suggestion anyway!

I think that as long as you put her in a color that is unexpected, I think that you'll make it your own. Either way I definitely wanna see what you come up with!! So I'll be Dev-watching you too. lol
