Description This is a shot that I took back in October 2003. I've been hesitant to post it for a variety of reasons.

It was the first cold day after a long warm autumn in Colorado. The lakes and ponds in Colorado had been heating up all summer. They started to mist and fog on this day. I took my lunch and drove around the area looking at the fog and the reservoir. I was running out of time on my lunch and I still hadn't shot anything that I wanted to keep. Then I wound up on this side of the reservoir. Presto.

My digital camera starts to do interesting things to pictures when the batteries are running low. I'd shot somewhere between 40 - 50 pictures around the reservoir and the batteries were almost gone. By the time I took this shot, the camera was starting to do, well interesting things. The picture was just amazing. I tried 4 or 5 variations on this shot and then the camera ran out of electricity and shut down.

As near as I can remember this [link]
is where that picture was taken. Looking west or north west-ish.

It was a fun location

I really like this. It's not your typical autumn photo, especially not for Colorado. I live in Denver, so I know how quickly autumn goes by in Colorado. I like that the colours are slightly muted; you can really feel the chill from the fog off the lake. Reminds me of driving up to Aspen with my dad when the colours start to change. Out of curiosity, where exactly was this taken? Wherever it is, I'd love to visit, 'cos it looks absolutely gorgeous.

This is nearly perfect. It would be 100% if the fence weren't there. I'm sure there was nothing u could do about it though.

The shot is very clear, I almost thought it wasn't real

I feel that this is a kind of shot that conveys and evokes a lot of different emotions in a lot of people. Either it reminds them of childhood or of a romantic outing or maybe a story they read. Perhaps it just brings familiar feelings and not actual memories. To me, it reminds me of the book I'm writing. It also reminds me of the days I came home from school and my mom had some hot chocolate waiting!

The mists seem mysterious and almost eerie, I have to agree with Llryia. And yet they seem a bit romantic too. But then mystery and romance often go hand in hand.

I'm actually not a big fan of fall and fall colors, but I feel that there is just a real richness about this picture. You have greens and reds, oranges, greys, dark browns to near black... it's just really lovely.

I love the detail.

As for the blue sign and fence... I don't really feel that it detracts from the photo but maybe adds another side all of it's own... It's almost as if nature is threatening to retake what it lost, looming over the little man made fence...

I suppose I've gone on long enough

Fall in Colorado is fleeting. There are all these spectacular trees and their leaves change all kinds of colors. But it doesn’t last very long. Peak viewing is usually one particular weekend.

The colors change in Colorado because the nights get cold. When the nights get cold and the days stay warm, you get these powerfull winds blowing through the trees and all the leaves go with the wind.

And some years you get a very interesting day or two. The first time the temperature drops into the 30s or the 40s for the day’s high. In this case it was the first cold snap of the year. Coming off of 70 degree days it was a bit of a shock for everyone.

The lakes here give off all their excess heat in the form of mist. It makes for a magical day. In my case, a magical lunch hour.

One of the things I like best about this piece is that the lake is deep in the middle of a suburb, a man made reservoir to supply water to the surrounding areas. The fog and the trees create an atmosphere that makes you think of somewhere other than a Colorado suburb. This is one of my favorite pieces.

It’s not a typical Colorado fall picture. And it’s so very much a Colorado photograph.

Thanks for your great comment, I’m touched that you left if for me.

I love that it's in the middle of a suburb... we need more places like this! I'm no hippy but I do think we've lost touch with a lot of things such as nature. I think it's part of the human need to be around nature and creation. From this picture, I couldn't have told you it was a manmade body of water... Looks like nature's taken it under it's wing!

And thank you for such a great comment back! While I appreciate "thanks" from other people or even "that's cool" on comments from my own work, it's nice to get some real comments of substance~!!! Hehe... (not to mention, someone that understands the basic uses of grammar and spelling )

This is so wonderful Jon! The sharp and clear details of this are spectacular, it almost looks like a painting with the soft and whispy mist floating over it all. The colors are so brilliant! You amaze my sense of sight with your works, and I am so happy to see you back!

I think this turned out very well. Seeing the fog rolling off the lake really gives it an eerie feeling. The little bit of the river and the reflections of the tree in the middle of dead grass brings out that "Fall" feeling.

I wish however, that the fence wasn't in the image.. That isn't as bothersome though as that little blue sign on the fence Besides that, you have to look carefully to see the "civilization" stuff.

Well Done
