Description This was shot last year at the Chyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs. I didn't care for the original exposure or the framing of the picture. I came back to it in my collection with a better set of tools and skills. I took another approach to this shot. So, here is an Okapi from the Chyenne Mountain Zoo. There is no border, because I couldn't figure out a great way to do one with the sizing of the image.

I stumbled upon your work and I have absolutely fallen in love with this photo. I was wondering if I could have your permission in order to use this photo for a reference for a painting. I look forward to your response!

This is a nice picture. The colors are what really make it, I think--that background is simple enough to allow the focus to remain on the lovely okapi and the lovely stripes, and the coat itself is rich and gorgeous looking. The composition works, too.

I do wish his hooves were in the picture, but it is one of the better okapi captures I have seen on DA.

Yeah. The little buggers are hard to photograph. I've tried a bunch since and I've never really had a lot of luck.

I may have to go to the zoo with an Okapi shot as my goal and see what I can bring back.

Thanks for the comment!

What a gorgeous picture - would you mind if I used this as an avatar, perhaps?

I really like this one! I love the composition, and the colors are great. This does not belong in the scraps section. And, from reading your last comment back to kkart, they do have Okapis at the denver zoo, they ahve 3 of them. But they are also very shy, and stick to the back as well.

I was never overly happy with the technical aspects of this image. I returned to it a couple times to try and fix the image. It's not a bad picture; however, I don't think it is an accurate representation of my current skill with a camera. It also doesn't quite fit in with my style of photography. So it got moved in the scraps section.

I was surprised to see you comment on the image. I'm not used to having people browse through my scraps

Thanks for the fav and your feedback! I'll have to look for the okapi next time I'm at the zoo. I'll see if I can craft an image that I'm happy with and post it here

I don't think there are any at the Denver Zoo. I'd never seen one either. I spend 20 minutes taking pictures. It's in the old converted Giraffee house. The Okapi was shy and stuck to the very back of the enclosure, about as far away from people as you could get.

The sign says that they're closer to a giraffee than a zebra. Long purple tounge, stubby antlers. That kinda stuff. It's definalty a fun animal to look at.

Okapis are too cool. I really like the colors in this photograph, the pink, waterstained cement is a great background for an animal with such contrasted fur. I like how you didn't cut off most of the legs and let the grass play into the picture aswell.

Thank you. The colors of the enclosure did work out pretty well here. The day was starting to cloud over and rain, so the diffuesed light helped light the Okapi without overpowering the dark colors.
