Hello again! Second upload of the day! Alright, so like Lucia and Skittles, I rebuilt Rosethorn’s design with the new character template. This was one of the most difficult characters to redesign, and I went through a LOT of different draft ideas before finally settling on this one.
Quick overview of Rosethorn’s character! She is the ShadowClan medicine cat, and is currently the only female medicine cat as of the beginning of EOTS. She is generally quiet and well-mannered, but when she gets comfortable with other cats she eases up a bit and shows a more sarcastic, witty side that many cats don’t see. Rosethorn enjoys talking walks through the forest by herself, and is quite fond of the cool shadows provided by ShadowClan’s dense evergreen trees. She has a turbulent relationship with ShadowClan’s deputy, Slatefur, and tends to swing back and forth between seeking his praise and wishing he would disappear from her life. She is very close with her same-age sister, Blossomfur, but is less close with her younger sister, Poppypaw, who is Slatefur's apprentice. Rosethorn is closer to her father, Gorsefur, than she is her mother, Spruceleaf.
In her original design, basically everything from Rosethorn’s shoulders to her tail was black, with the exception of her white paws and two white splotches. To sum it up, she had a pretty boring and lackluster design. When I first designed Rosethorn, I was intimidated by the idea of drawing a more complex, asymmetrical tortoiseshell design, especially for a cat with longer fur. Thankfully though, Rosethorn was near the top of my list of characters needing a redesign, and I’m so glad I finally finished it today!
Okay so onto the redesign. The biggest change is definitely the pattern I added to Rosethorn’s main body. Instead of the plain black area from the original design, I gave Rosethorn a red stripe that stretches across her back and connects her front left leg to her right hind leg. I’m very happy with this pattern because it’s far more interesting to look at than her original pattern was. I did my best to achieve a “thorny“ look with the red body pattern to better reflect her name. I gave her slightly longer ears and wavier facial fur. I got rid of the weird bi-color triangle marks that sat below her eyes in the original design and replaced them with a thin white area just below her lower eyelid. This, along with the lighter area above both of her eyes, are my way of trying to highlight her face and better emphasize her facial features, which (like many of my darker cat designs) were sometimes hard to distinguish from her darker coat colors. I made the white areas on her paws and legs bigger, and I added a white strip to the underside of her tail, which is now a bit spikier. I also added a red area to the end of her tail, above the white part. For those of you who are especially observant, you may have noticed the red pattern on her tail does not quite match up with the same pattern shown in the above and below view in the top right. I decided that, to make life easier, I would have Rosethorn’s red-tipped tail have “spikes” (idk what to call them, but the sharp triangular parts) that reflect the tail’s lineart. I’ll probably keep the bit that connects with the white strip consistent and pointing in the same direction, but for the areas that don’t touch any white fur I’ll probably just have them match the tail fur spikes in the lineart. I hope that made sense.
In terms of physical characteristics, Rosethorn is above average height, and she stands a bit taller than Skittles’ adult height. She is also slightly taller than Slatefur, who is the ShadowClan deputy. In my rough drafts for the redesign, Rosethorn was MUCH fluffier, but I decided to smooth some of that fluff down because it made her look way bulkier than she really is and it just looked odd. I’ll definitely have super fluffy characters later down the line, but Rosethorn isn’t one of them. I had a bit of trouble striking a balance between a lean body type and a thick coat of fur, but I think I made it work more or less.
While not directly relevant to her design, I listened to a lot of Lindsey Stirling while I worked on Rosethorn’s design. I feel like it suits her, and if she were a human she’d probably play the violin and/or piano as a hobby.
Let me know what you all think in the comments! I love hearing your feedback and thoughts! :J
EDIT: I’m noticing something looks a little weird about the profile view of Rosethorn’s head. I think it has something to do with the eyes (maybe their placement?) but it just looks a bit off. I’m not sure what it is, but the main purpose of the profile view here is to show general face shape from the side, so I’m not going to worry about it to much.
