Were the designers influenced by an ancient television show about a space station in a hostile region of space?

Seriously, I like this design; it reminds me of a certain type of plant seed, actually. The passing resemblance to DS9 isn't a bad thing. A "barbed ring" design has lots of flexibility, and can be interpreted in a number of different ways.

Nicely done.

a model that complex needs more than just one comprehensive texture, i mean unless you do want to unwrap the uvw's and try to paint every poly, i dont know what program you used but in cinema 4d i set selections and assign materials to those poly selections.

Gotta be honest, your modeling is beautiful but the texture brings it down a couple of levels... Keep up the awesome work though!

thanks, yeah texturing is something that is a bit of a headache for me. i am working on a new possible texture but we shall see?

Haha I hope you'll get around to it! I hate unwrapping UVWs >.<

The model is really nice. I agree that the texture could be a bit better, and I also wholeheartedly agree that UV unwrapping is not my thing.

There's a weird halo around the model that looks like it was from compositing with the background. I find rendering to .png with alpha (or another format with alpha support) works pretty well for that sort of thing. Something's also bugging me a bit about the lighting, but I can't put my finger on it.

I've downloaded the model to study, thanks for uploading it!

i think i rushed it a little, and i didn't want to spend to long a time fussing over it as it isn't 100% finished

Truly awesome, though I would have added some lighted windows and the like to the structure to add 'life'.

sorry mate, no time I'm afraid. I'm sorry I haven't commented on the finished model, it's amazing, I like the detail you put into it, although I have to agree with another...commenteer the texture does seem out of place, looking glued on aggressively , but I know what it's like unwrapping uvws and I doubt you'd have much fun playing so long with it . I'd love to play with the station putting in a scene myself, but I doubt I could do it justice. I'm afraid I have to say this doesn't either it deserves a majestic scene, and though the backdrop is great, I'm afraid the lighting doesn't hold p to the quality of you modeling Consider it closure if you wanted to make the model, it's great wait a little while, I'm sure somebody will like to use it somewhere keep up the good work

thanks for the comments, most appreciated. i am planning on making a proper backdrop of my own to make the whole thing 100% my own.
texturing on this type of model has never be one of my strong points but as soon as i get my computer back i am planning on getting more into the whole unwrapping thing

you're welcome ^^ sorry I didn't reply sooner

strong point or not, texturing something of that size is a tremendous undertaking no matter what way you look at it
