I pretty much consider these two as being the best pairing that never happened in the old DC Universe, with both characters having various matches thrown at them, some almost appropriate and others head scratching. Even so, while they were never romantic with each other, they were good friends.I do think it was a pity that this was almost forgotten by writers from the early 2000's, in part thanks to the JSA comics which i sometimes think treated Powergirls Justice League years with near insulting dismissal. I guess acknowledging that she had gained a bucket load of friends in that team, powered and non powered would have slightly spoiled the 'lonely woman from another universe with no one she can relate to' aspect of her that some writers tried to overplay to show how much she regarded the JSA as her family.
Pleasingly their friendship was finally referred to in the 2010/2011 story Justice League Generation Lost ( and gave additional relevance to a mind controlled Power Girl giving Captain Atom a beating ), but then the powers that be in DC rebooted everything, typical...
So here they are in their pre New 52 form.

Very nice! I enjoyed seeing them in the Justice League International. The Generation Lost storyline seems like fun because it references so much of the Giffen / DeMatteis run. On the other hand, it seems a bit dark with Max being evil and such⦠so far I only read the very first issue. Kinda worried it'll ruin my fond memories of the original run :-D

Its good, not perfect ( there are slight continuity issues that felt unneeded, like Ices revised backstory ), but it was great to see some of the key members of the JLI active again. And the tone while serious has some good moments.

Yeah, I don't get that. I haven't read as much PG as you but judging what I've seen from BoP, JLI, and JLE she's extremely likeable.Β

She always struck me as presenting a tough exterior but actually being a very personable character, she got on with people even if she did have issues bubbling inside her, which made her interesting and human. If i'm honest, i think the JSA period got her more or less right in character, it just felt a bit heavy handed at times, and her 1987-2001 continuity was generally ignored, dismissed, or altered ( and i'm not sure why ).
If you haven't read them i recommend the 2009-2011 Power Girl solo series which was very fun and feels more like JLI Power Girl ( mostly due to the mildly daft situations that have underlying seriousness ) and slightly more serious Generation Lost, which bookends the JLI era, is also worth reading ( it has some good moments, one of my personal favourites is Captain Atom confronting Maxwell Lord towards the end, it was nice to see Max panicking ).
