Description
This is the Rogue litho I just finished for Sideshow Collectibles; it comes with the Rogue comiquette if you order the exclusive version.Since my hand is messed up, I couldn't pencil and ink this the way I'd like. So, since I needed to make sexy lemonade out of this mess, I took my original concept illustration and just colored & painted it in Photoshop.
Before anyone asks, here's the reasons why I cropped it... First, I thought that the Black Cat print was dull, and one of the reasons is because it's full figure. You don't NEED a full-figure print of the character.... because you have the statue! You can see her toes THERE. I decided to crop in so that the piece would be about the face and the body language. I also cropped in because time was tight, San Diego was looming, and the AC was out and it was 95 degrees in my house.
As for technique/method.... I took the original high-rez Grayscale scan, cropped it, and converted it to CMYK Mode. It looked the same. I then used things like Variations, CHannel Mixer, and Hue/Saturation to change the gray values to have hues. At that stage, it looked like an oil painter's underpainting.
I then went in and built up the highlights using the pencil tool set on 10-21% opacity to slowly build up my "brush strokes" and give it an analog feel.
The highlights on the latex were accomplished using the lasso tool and my color Fills set to Screen or Linear Dodge.

oh my god, amazing ! How do you do to make your line vanish behind the color ???

Took me a while to dope it out, but what you do is set your Brush tool or whatver to "Color". When you apply, it will change the Hue (color) of the line, without affect the saturation or luminosity. GREAT way to colorize stuff! If any of the colored lines are still too dark, set your Brush tool to "Lighten", select a lighter color pixel in the general vicinity, and start colorin'!

GREAT trick: make custom brushes of cloud shapes, and use them at 10-21% opacity (set to "Lighten).
Open a new doc in Photoshop, Grayscale. 300 dpi or higher.
Use Filter>Render> Clouds with the default foreground & backgound colors (black und white, ja, ja).
With the Lasso, make a sloppy selection around a black shape you like.
Use Edit>Define brush, and it saves the black shape as a brush!
Go to town!
Hope that helps.

I love how the ruins are in disarray yet still neatly contained. This would make an awesome design for an action figure, much in the way the Matrix line worked with its gravity-defying poses.

It would've been alien to me, too, several years ago.
Just mess around in Photoshop, and figure out what the different tools and features can do, and doors just start unlocking!
Art is fun, whee!

There's a goJILLION things I suck at, art-wise. Biggest trick in Art: NEVER show off anything but the stuff you're good at!

So it is written, so shall it be done!!
Though you are certainly capable in one particular area that I crap out in: the rendering of the female form. You, good sir, are a modern day master.

It's great! Actually, i'm surprised you weren't on here earlier, but obviously we are all enthused(To say the least) that you are on now. Now we can learn from the master . I have learned quite a few coloring techniques from the other pro's here as well. Now , I just have to learn how to apply them effectively

this works, like you said the whole image isn't necessary to see=] you get the gist based on the composition that you do see. Glad to see you're able to create still with your hand in the condition it is.

As always sir this is amazing. I wish I could have picked up a print at Comic Con this year. This piece is just beautiful. I was glad to hear that your hand is on the mend though as I'm sure you are.
The crop does make for a more fun picture. I agree that you don't need the full body if you bought the statue already. HAHA!
Keep up the amazing work!

Sideshow sent me a production sample of the statue. It looks AMAZING in person. The online pogots don't do her justice, ESPECIALLY the paint application on her latex!

Wow, not only is the technique effective, but very unique (from my perspective.) I may have to try using selections and the pencil too. (instead of the airbrush-like brush)
