Description
Another tutorial, my first that actually deals with drawing skills. I tried to keep this very concise, more pictures than words, so there might not be as much information as should be. Hopefully its still helpful, and I'm always happy to clarify stuff, just let me know.BTW, this tutorial is almost, but not quite, for beginners. It assumes some basic exposure to linear perspective, and is designed to help people get more comfortable with perspective, and find new and better ways to use it.
Edit: Wow, much thanks for the great positive response to this. If I had known this was going to see this much traffic, I would have checked my spelling more carefully.
Edit 2: Wow, a DD... now I REALLY wish I had checked my spelling and grammar.

Fantastic! I've read half of it and already learned a lot. Thank you so much!
Only complaint is that you could have used a sharper text font for smoother reading.

Thanks! X3 Drawing some perspectives, for me, while it can be done, is an absolute pain in the behind. D: This is going to help loads in the project I'm working on. <3

I already knew what perspective was ... but the idea of just drawing the lines beforehand and not only points is really great
I'll use it in the future Thank you!

Gah, this is AWESOME. It's over a decade since I learnt how to use perspective, and I've spent the time between mostly not drawing, and certainly not using it. This is a brilliantly clear recap!

If i just had that a couple weeks ago! I was starting to draw a scene with a girl attempting to fly away from a building, means I'm looking down from the top of that building. Killed me to design the grid. If I had had that tutorial sooner, it would have been a lot lot easier. XD

This is very good. I love how you help the reader with perspective without bossing them around (you MUST do this and this HAS to go that way). I feel I can really make my drawings so much better with this tut. Thank you!

I still find it an impossibility -- especially when the perspective points that are needed are off the freakin' paper!
Not puttin' you down, tho'; this is a very well-done, short and comprehensive guide. It's just that I need a bigger paper

I do all of my tight perspective in Manga Studio, so I've happily left the hassles of paper and rulers behind.
But, there are some tricks for traditional methods which help. It IS a pain when the points are off the page, which, they usually have to be to avoid a super distorted image. One thing you can do is tape pieces to the sides of your paper, and put the points on them. While you are working on it, its like one big piece with the points on the paper, but when you are done, you remove the side panels and viola, a nice 2 point grid.
When I'm sketching, this is why I draw a smaller frame on the page; it lets me put points outside the "frame" without being off the paper.
Another trick is to make (or find online) some pre-ruled grids, and place them under your paper to trace. Lightboxes make this easy, but I've used a window plenty of times. Here's a good place to look for them: [link] Print and trace.

Still gives me a headache must be because of "all those lines, lines, lines, LINES!"
BTW, I'm surprised this isn't in that new learn-to-draw-manga group yet... If I could only remember the name...

this is the easiest and most powerful tutorial I've ever read on perspective. and for the first time ever... I understood it! finally!
thank you so much for this tutorial, you've managed to teach me something I've been struggling to figure out for quite a while (for some reason, none of the other tutorials ever clicked with me...)
thank you!

Thank *you*. Perspective definitely seems to be something that just clicks, and its hard to find the right balance of necessary information minus confusing details. Glad to hear my approach is working for you.
