An old-ish con sketch of Nene and Linna from BUBBLEGUM CRISIS. Yes, they indeed have lips, in this version of the characters; please, just DEAL WITH IT, those of you who are prone to conniptions at the very idea of an anime character with a mouth that's not entirely muppet-like. After all, shockingly enough, a burgeoning number of "real manga-ka" (that is, authentic Japanese artists) actually draw visible lips on their characters nowadays...Amusingly enough, I turned to the inside back cover of EMPOWERED vol. 1 (my "sexy superhero comedy" from Dark Horse, on sale this Wednesday, March 21st!) and was stunned to discover that Dark Horse apparently still has copies of the TPB of BUBBLEGUM CRISIS: GRAND MAL for sale! GRAND MAL was my 1994 miniseries telling a new tale of the Knight Sabers; I'm quite surprised to find it's still available.

Let me take this opportunity to tell the rest of the Warren fans who haven't yet picked up Grand Mal the following: You'll love the warped presentation of the BGC backstory, the vocal stylings of Priss (I like to imagine Arch Enemy's Angela Gossow as Priss in that scene--Hail the Diva Satanica!), the wisecracks of Nene, the slam-bang action, the fan service, and how Warren can refer to the original Japanese lyrics of "There's a Hurricane Tonight" and to LL Cool J's "Mama Said Knock You Out" in the same volume. I say: Pick it up NOW!

Great art work men, love the way you draw Bubblegum Girls, and is really true what you says i don't see why someone have to complain about you drawing lips(by the way i love your way to do it) real goods manga-kas like Yukito Kishiro and Masamune Shirow draw lips in their characters, and so many more, that is better and looks more sexys the girls with that detail.

As a proud owner of 'Grand Mal', I've just gotta fave this.
You really should try to make more DP and BGC art, man. I mean, it has been my bad luck that I only own one DP paperback ('Sim Hell'. I also had 'Run From The Future', but it was stolen) and problably will never get the rest (woe me!).
But I try to get all other stuff. I'm also a proud owner of the two Emp paperbacks that has been released so far.

I can't think of anything to say that wouldn't make me sound like another Adam Warren fanboy...
I would love to know how long something like this takes you to draw. Was this done in a matter of hours? Days? I'd imagine after gaining enough experience that proportion, shading, perspective and the like become something like tying your shoelaces.

Heh. Do manga fans really complain when artists draw lips? IIRC, Tsukasa Hojo drew lips and I don't think anybody would call him an iconoclast.

i honestly don't see why people freak out cuz you draw lips, i think it makes them intresting, and set you apart from others, it's uniquely your style

Also, most people complained of one of the heroines SMOKING, not about the lips, if i remember correctly.

"Original" BGC to me has felt to me like a series that *looked* a lot better than it actually was. Given its production arrangement, which sounded like an invitation to chaos, it's probably not surprising that the story conception and execution was sometimes not very strong. (BGC 2040 is much better written, even though a lot of folks seem to feel it has less "charm"...) But the visual aspects (and the music) were quite fine in that older series.
Ah, the two "main" characters I always felt got the short end. They never seemed to know quite what to do with Linna... and Nene was generally a lot more effective back in the computer room than in combat (with the amazing Suit that Doesn't Do Much). I have a certain fondness for them nonetheless and quite like your drawing of them here.
What's all the fuss about lips? Why don't the *pointy* chins that a lot of female anime characters have bother more people? I prefer the more graceful shape you use.

Wow is about all I can really say. I've been a big fan of BGC for a long time particularly 2040, but never found a great deal of images I liked of it. The way you've got the highlights on the armor is great and I really like how you did Leena's hair. Lips look great by the way. I remember getting picking up the Dirty Pair series you did back in the 90's and spend weeks trying to redraw them and your chains the same way.

I really love the hair on the one to the right, I myself have never seen bubblegum crsis, but the characters as you've portrayed them intrigue me to have a look at the anime.
As for the lips thing it never bothered me the way you draw them, I've always loved it, every person draws different if you like to include lips in your work why not.
