Description
An illo that Ryan Kinnaird and I did for the videogame magazine PSM, to accompany an article about fantasy RPG games in general. Me on the line art, Ryan on the colors.Side note: Two of the characters in this illo were also part of BLOOD OF THE MAGI, a fantasy comic I pitched to Wildstorm/DC as a Cliffhanger project years ago... The "elf spellcaster" at far left was MAGI's lead character, though in a considerably less "racktastic" incarnation (to contrast with her more buxom co-star, who was based on "Skaya", the former lead character from yet another defunct project, CANNIBAL SUN).
The blonde, bloodied "healer" at right was also a minor character in BLOOD OF THE MAGI; furthermore, a version of this character appeared in the great Carla Speed McNeil’s story in the SEXY CHIX anthology from Dark Horse. We’d had a number of lengthy e-mail discussions about the “happy healer” (who magically tinkers with her own neurochemistry to STAY happy), so I gave my blessing when Carla did a bloody and very funny story about how the healer might carry out her work.

OK, while fantasy (D&D, S&S, etc.) doesn't do much for me on the whole*, I certainly like the detail work and some of the character concepts in this piece! (Gotta love the elf-mage's portable spell library...)
*OTOH, Takachiho's latest Dirty Pair novel takes place in a swords'n'sorcery setting -- go figure...

Anyway. Sword and Sorcercy has allways been seen as the more blood-and-tits oriented side of Fantasy. But the only thing that really sets them apart is the number of chainmail bikinis passed around.
Some so-called Fantasy books are just charades masquing horrible corsage-rippers. :\

Your work with PSM was a major motivator in my purchasing it in a time when I was very muchso considering dropping the magazine. This article in particular was a favorite of mine, as it represented so many interesting concepts and ideas and, of course, featured your art and writing, both of which I've tried to keep up with for several years now. I'm especially fond of the rogue-y fellow.
Damn. Now I'm gonna have to fish this magazine out my stuff and reread it.

I've always loved the happy healer girl. Cuteness and morbidity rolled into one character always equals perfection.
And the spellcaster...guh... Your design is excellence, and Ryan's glowtastic skills slay me as they've done on a regular basis.

Though I have to admit the "happy healer' girl kinda creeps me out, seeing someone with that happy of an expression and covered in that much blood kinda weirds me out.

The bloody healer is the best thing ever. I mean visually, obviously, she's hilarious, but the concept is great too. I mean really, if MASH taught us anything, it's that military medicine has never been a tidy, pristine job.

RPG fantasy should be a must in every HQ Artist's profile - i think you should place Blood of the Magi in the line after 'empowered'.
