Description
An illo that Ryan Kinnaird and I did for the videogame magazine PSM, to accompany an article about fantasy RPG games in general. Me on the line art, Ryan on the colors.Side note: Two of the characters in this illo were also part of BLOOD OF THE MAGI, a fantasy comic I pitched to Wildstorm/DC as a Cliffhanger project years ago... The "elf spellcaster" at far left was MAGI's lead character, though in a considerably less "racktastic" incarnation (to contrast with her more buxom co-star, who was based on "Skaya", the former lead character from yet another defunct project, CANNIBAL SUN).
The blonde, bloodied "healer" at right was also a minor character in BLOOD OF THE MAGI; furthermore, a version of this character appeared in the great Carla Speed McNeil’s story in the SEXY CHIX anthology from Dark Horse. We’d had a number of lengthy e-mail discussions about the “happy healer” (who magically tinkers with her own neurochemistry to STAY happy), so I gave my blessing when Carla did a bloody and very funny story about how the healer might carry out her work.

I've had this as a backdrop for longer than I know. I always assumed it was from something Exalted. The healer is a character I'd like to get to know. ...and, does anyone else see a bit of Phallik, Ocelotina, or others from elsewhere? No? Okay.

Having had a look at the FPF article for Blood of the Magi (and remembering this from reading a copy of PSM in middle school), I think you oughta start up RPG Maker and make this thing.
It's an interesting combination of current wRPG and JRPG elements, save with the assumption that the jRPG in question was designed by Kouta Hirano rather than Tetsuya Nomura.
The protag also reminds me of a female Raistlin Majere, except not a complete arse-focused on the pursuit of magical power nearly to the exclusion of all else.

Hey man, I was wondering, do you have a link somewhere on this piece for when you originally had it posted in PSM? You had Great write up's on all these characters. I enjoyed how thought out it was for a single magazine piece and I wanted to share with my flatmates. So, if ya know where there might be a copy of that descriptions I'd love to find it!

i never thought i'd stumble over this image years later after having plastered on my wall for years from that psm issue. i loved it then and i still love it now. it's inspired me in so many ways.

I don't particularly care for the other characters, but the red haired hero reminds me of Adol of Wanderers from YS. It's on the Snes, PSP & PS2. Nice try, though. I would throw in other well known characters

I think your work is amazing. The first time I saw it was not too long ago with the game SSX 3. I won't rant on but the life you bring to the pieces like this one here as well is great.

I really loved this pic in PSM... and got a laugh off the healer too.

I gotta admit man, i was a huge fan of this issue when it came out. I loved the backdrop you gave to each of the characters. Specially the healer and how she would get in the 'blood and guts' of her patiants to heal em.
Also the big guy or your standard "Buff dude" for the party was like, tweaked out on overuse of magical buffs throughout all his adventures. Made for a great read on how the RPG structure works.

I love it the pic ish absolutely great ^w^ The effect that comes from the spellcasters fingers looks great and I really like the expression that the healer has x3 And the blades are to die for ^w^

the one i think that is great in detail has to be the leather domino-mask character. otherwise, i would also have to go for your "happy healer".
