Description
Behold, a page from the second volume of EMPOWERED, my “sexy superhero comedy” published by Dark Horse comics.* Behold, in particular, a page from the story “The Aryan Ideal of Shoulder Candy” [link] ...a story which, alas, has garnered some highly problematic misinterpretation from at least one outraged reader. Read on, and I shall attempt to clarify and explain the matter at hand.As is made clearer in later volumes, the characters within the “Empverse” depicted in EMPOWERED operate by a set of so-called “Unwritten Rules” governing superhuman-related behavior and interactions. These rules are, alas, occasionally fudged and sometimes broken entirely ...with the literally burning example of this being the uber-horny supervillain “Willy Pete”.
In particular, one story in vol. 2, “The Aryan Ideal of Shoulder Candy,” features a female character who gets rather, ah, excessively forward with Emp, to the point that I actually considered cutting the story entirely. However, I wound up leaving the story in the volume anyway (though with a few cuts), as that character later winds up as the improbable, kinda-sorta superheroine “Ocelotina” in EMPOWERED vol. 3... and, furthermore, the story in question features the volume’s primary appearance by Emp’s nemesis Sistah Spooky (whose motives in said story may well be misunderstood, but I’ll worry about that later).
At one point in “Shoulder Candy”, the future Ocelotina fondles a naked Emp, a move which is meant to be wrong and inappropriate within the context of the story itself, and is, in fact, a clear violation of the Empverse’s “Unwritten Rules”. As you will see in future Ocelotina appearances, however, this self-absorbed, highly overconfident young woman does not believe that ANY rules apply to her. Unlike most of the other characters in EMPOWERED, she is wholly unburdened by insecurities or self-doubt... nor by many (or, indeed, ANY) thoughts regarding the consequences of her actions. You’ll note that she strictly forbids her brother from making any “bad touches” to Emp... but she herself, of course, considers herself to be allowed to do whatever the hell she wants.
Now, we come to most the problematic part of this story... In three panels of “Shoulder Candy,” on pages 67, 68 and 69 of EMPOWERED vol. 2, the future Ocelotina is most definitely touching Emp in a wrong and inappropriate manner. Let me state for the record, however, that she is NOT, repeat NOT digitally penetrating Emp in those panels, as several readers have unfortunately misinterpreted to be the case. She’s still certainly committing a “bad touch”, to be sure, but not THAT bad of a touch. (Also for the record: ANY touch made to a naked superhero or superheroine is considered a “bad touch” under the “Unwritten Rules,” which will be addressed in greater detail in the future.)
I wasn’t particularly comfortable with leaving those three panels in the book, to be honest, as it occurred to me that they were ambiguous enough to possibly be misinterpreted in this manner. I just didn’t have the energy to completely redraw them at the time I was handing in the book’s artwork, after relettering and correcting roughly 200 pages over the space of a week or so. (Yeah, yeah, boo hoo, I know.) In any event, in the second printing of EMPOWERED vol. 2, I’m going to redraw those three panels (and move ’Tina’s hand WAY the hell away from Emp’s “danger zone” ) to make it absolutely fricking clear to all readers that Emp is not, repeat NOT being fingered, okay?
Furthermore, later on, I may establish that Sistah Spooky wiped Emp’s memories of the whole incident... The idea being that Spooky doesn’t want to leave Emp any recollection that bad guys might’ve theoretically found her more attractive (or that a sleepy Emp might recall some fragment of Spooky’s subsequent berating of said bad guys). Still not sure if I want to go that route, as I might want Emp to recall that she's met Ocelotina before when the latter chica reappears (as an alleged superheroine) in vol. 3...
Actually, the Spooky appearance in this story was one scene that I was almost SURE would be misinterpreted: Spooky does NOT, in fact, want to wind up as any villain’s “shoulder candy”. She DOES, however, wish to be taken into consideration for such a role, so as to assuage her highly unstable vanity. Yep, so extreme is her own degree of insecurity that she chooses to interpret the worst part of Emp’s superheroic career (our heroine’s frequent bouts of distress and/or peril) as somehow being a slight to herself.
In truth, this damn story’s given me quite a few hassles, over the last year or so. The original version ended completely differently... and in a manner that I personally found wrong and inappropriate, to boot, which is why I spiked said original ending! I often grow tired of working on the longer stories in EMPOWERED, and that definitely happened here... Around page thirteen in the original version, I just said “screw it,” and decided to end the story as abruptly as possible. Specifically, I jumped directly from the scene of (the future) Ocelotina fondling Emp in an automobile’s trunk to a scene of THUGBOY fondling Emp in bed, as she suddenly wakes up from the dream sequence that took up the previous thirteen pages! Yep, the rest of the story was naught but a dream... (Groan. Yep, I was gonna go THERE once again.) Actually, I might post that unused page of Thugboy and Emp in bed sometime, as it’s reasonably hawt... and would’ve provided a welcome bit of “the sexy” to a book that featured quite a bit less in the way of carnal shenanigans than the previous volume.
However, I got rid of that ending entirely, and tacked on the much longer Sistah Spooky section of the story instead. Why did I do that? In part, because I needed a Spooky appearance, and also because I already had another dream sequence, the Thugboy nightmare dealie, planned for later in the volume... (and Lord knows, I’ve spent most of my career running the “dream sequence” concept into the ground.) The main reason, though, was that I thought the original ending might well be misinterpreted as Emp, in effect, fantasizing about getting tied up! That, boys and girls, would be SERIOUSLY wrong and inappropriate, as Emp doesn’t particularly appreciate her frequent forays into peril. No, really, she doesn’t.
So, I changed the ending, and promptly managed to stumble into a completely different and considerably thornier thicket of reader misinterpretation. Just grrrrrrreat!
*You can pick up EMPOWERED vol. 2 at your local comics retailer or bookstore; if it's not in stock, they'd no doubt be happy to order it (if only you ask) , so as to garner your caysh, yo. Heck, even my local Barnes & Noble briefly stocked EMPOWERED vol. 1, albeit in the jumbled hellscape of the regular comics section, as opposed to the orderly paradise of the manga section... or you can order EMP 2 from DH online at:

Thanks muchly for clearing this up, Adam. I've been arguing with someone for the past few days about what exactly was going on in that chapter, and I appreciate my interpretation being confirmed.

Ah, the perils of making it up as you go along. I've run into similar hassles with my own stories.
I just got my copy of Empowered 2 a couple of days ago, and while I thought I would enjoy the longer story format, in truth it actually made the book feel a lot shorter (I dunno, maybe it was actually shorter). I personally would prefer it if you kept building on storylines within storylines with much smaller, self contained chapters. But that's just me.
On to the event in question, to be honest I read right past this element and didn't think much of it. I didn't even consider that the girl may or may not have been finger-screwing Emp...either way with all the sex from the first book, I thought it worked in context, and I didn't dwell on it at all. But, if enough people whine about something, I suppose that warrants a need for revision.
At any rate, I'll continue to enjoy your work. I'm eagerly waiting for volume 3. Keep it up.

Hey Adam it's also cool of you to care for your fans and I'm all for that but doing a whole page cause of one ( 1angry Jane Doe) is not cool, Darkhorse didn't have a problem with it and the majority your fans understood what the scene is all about: one girl feeling another girl out in a very inappropriate manner that is not finger dipping. Please don't change it. Cause i really do love how ya do your stuff as it is, cause you thought it out and concluded that this was the best way to go. Rock on Master craftsman.

Gotta agree with True-Pain: I feel if you want to be restrictive of your storytelling in the future that's your choice, but making modifications based on a limited number of people's misinterpretation of your intentions doesn't seem quite right. First of all, the art is already out there, it's not going away. Secondly, it's a lot of effort just to placate some people who didn't understand your meaning; you can't please everybody all the time, and if it's not this it may be something else in the future that sets someone off. You know what the intent was, you explained it as best you could, and that's really all that needs to be done -- it's not a kiddie comic book in any sense and as such shouldn't be mollycoddled into something softer-touch (so to speak).

Well I think people are pretty stupid cause I didn't
interpret that scene as a finger f**k. You shouldn't change it cause you'll just cause a collector frenzy for nothing, but a cheesecake part in Empverse. Unless you want to create said collector frenzy to spike sales and get an interview on Newsarama on how you manipulated you readers(the dumb ones) to buy more copies of Emp 2 cause of "suggested finger f@%king.
Remember the wizard's first rule People are stupid. You can enlighten them or take advantage it's your choice.

That's sort of nuts, actually. I'm *trying* to see something dirty in the picture, but I'm just not getting it. I bought both books and all, and the image suggested by this "angry reader" hadn't been obvious to me all up-close-and-personal-like, either.
Maybe it's someone looking for excitement, and therefore is trying to bait you to have an argument to placate him/herself?

Oh, I "see" it now. But the thing is, that reader had to deliberately take the scene out of context in order to find any offense.
So yeah, you're being baited by someone who hasn't anything better to do.

Why even worry about it? It's not like Empowered was ever a children's comic.
Leave the scene as it is and let imaginations go wild.

That's how I feel too. It's very clearly an "M" rated comic, or however they rate it in the comics world.
Actually I thought there was... digital... shenanigans were going on, and I was all for it. Being offended was quite frankly the furthest thing from my mind. I always compare M rated games and comics to R rated movies. If they can get away with it in movies, then people should expect that sort of thing in other similarly rated media.
Also it's good to read this and know that I'll have a 'first run' Emp 2 with potentially implied digital tomfoolery happening.

I can't believe that someone interpreted that story like that, seriously what is the world coming too...
Anyway, got my copy last weekend, volume two finally making it's way not only to england (Where the history is from), but to deepest darkest Devonshire to boot!
I really enjoyed the book Adam, this story in particular was a high point for me, not only for it's 'Racey-ness' but also for it's daring. Something of course I have always come to expect from you, and what makes me such a big fan of your work. Sure it was a risk, and a few people have complained about it, but when you come to it, this is down to there own lack of understanding, and not any fault on your part. So don't beat yourself up over it dude.
Matt
P.s. I can't wait for volume 3, this volume (more so than the last IMO) has the feel of being a "Part 1", so I'm looking forward to what you may have in-store for us next...
P.p.s. Any news regards currant success of Empowered? You have hinted that success may lead to further Volumes and possibly more Dirty Pair works, which would make the future that much more rosier for me at least

ambiguity aside, context is everything; and the context of Empowered as a whole shouldn't lead a person to interpret anything from them other than mature humor of the tongue and cheek persuasion.

Yeah, I saw that person's post on this particular part of Emp 2 and wasn't sure what to say to it as I'd read and interpreted this story quite a bit differently than them. I personally didn't have a problem with it as I figured the point was what Spooky was ranting about rather then the bad touch that I figured you'd put in as a funny way to hide Emp's crotch. Still, it's good to hear your thoughts and clarifications about this scene and all the sordid history behind it.

I recall hearing some flack about those pics, and it really annoys me you have to anything about it. I've seen people draw kiddie porn and murders with blood everywhere but of course the only thing we hear about is this. I've loved Emp and it's tongue and cheek humor, and when i saw those parts i honestly didn't think she was doing what they thought she was doing. Personally i just think their minds are in the gutter anyways, but what are you going to do. Me, i love the series and can't wait for #3, i wish you all the best Adam! Keep drawing my friend!

Yeah I came across that reader's journal entry about her thoughts and reactions to that chapter in the book. I gotta say, that I didn't think much of that scene when I read through it the first time but she did happen to make a good point.
Emp definitely has everywoman qualities about her that are written very well and I can see female readers identifying themselves with Emp. I can think of one woman I know in particular that has Emp like qualities in personality (as well as in body). So I understand where everyone is coming from.
I enjoyed volume 2 a lot and can't wait for 3 so get crackin', buddy!
