Private Commission, 2017; Copic marker, ink, white paint pen, charcoal pencil.Invincible is my favorite superhero comic of all time. Invincible & Atom Eve are maybe my favorite superhero couple of all time. Getting to draw this was practically a gift to me. Just so y'all know - I will do anything Invincible any time. Just try me!Β

I'm actually kind of glad. All the best stories have an end. I'd rather it go out having a basically perfect run than to have it drag on until it gets boring or runs out of ideas.

Well, please tell me what makes it the best? Β

It's a lot of things, really, but I'll hone in on the most important. First, it's been the vision of one writer and two artists for its entire run. That means that everything that happens means something - no reboots, no retcons, no stories that get left behind when a new creative team takes over. The entire run has been planned out by one guy and that consistency makes a huge difference. It means he can set up plotlines early on and you'll see ramifications reverborating 40 issues later. That kind of deeply interwoven story is almost unheard of in superhero comics, where plotlines matter or don't matter based on the whims of editorial and constantly shifting creators.
It's also extremely down to earth. The people feel like real people. Invincible often solves problems in outside-the-box ways that feel completely obvious, but which superhero comics never do. There's an issue where he's fighting a bank robber, but winds up resolving the conflict when the two have this long talk that's basically "Hey, you've made all these super-gadgets to rob people - you realize you could make way more money just engineering and patenting your ideas? Why bother robbing banks at all?" And the bad guy's like, crap, why didn't I think of that? There are a million little instances of that kind of thing, where Invincible goes a totally different direction from expected superhero norms, but ends up just making you wonder why no other hero comics had done it before.Β
I could go on and on, but it's just this huge 150-issue epic story that never drags and where everything that happens matters to the characters and the world that's being created. And at its core is this fantastic love story between Invincible and Eve that has so many wonderful ups and downs without ever being soap-operatic. I love it.

Mm ... I gotcha. Β That does sound pretty good to me, a bit more realistic to be sure, but in all of this ... he feels like a hero, not like a super-powered thug a lot of the comics feel to be these days. Β DC gives me migraines with the constant reboots (time travel stories make me itch!) and Marvel feels like they fight more among themselves then actually deal with villains or help people.
I'm probably going to check it out at some point. Β Thanks again. Β
