Description This is a pair of original characters from the comic I and my wife are developing - 'The Uniques.'

Mentor and Kinetic are the world’s greatest Psions (Psion = Unique with mental powers). They’re also Telepath’s parents. Oh, yeah-- they’re also dead, now. *sigh* They have a rather storied history in the book, including becoming the leaders of the League of Seven (biggest, baddest supergroup in our world), directly contributing to the implementation of civil rights coverage for Uniques, were two of the few people most directly involved in the end of the Cold War and prevention of WWIII, and also acting as beloved and respected superheroes in general.

One thing in our comic is that we didn’t want to do the whole ‘world that hates and fears them’ thing. It’s been done to death, and even the X-Men can’t really make it work too well anymore. We also wanted to tie the existence of the Uniques into our history, and still keep that history fairly close to our ‘real-world’ timeline. So while civil rights were tearing the country apart in the 60’s-70’s, Mentor and Kinetic were the ones acting as the ‘Xavier’ for Unique rights, while their closest friend and teammate became the ‘Magneto.’

Due in large part to the work they did back then, by the time our story starts in 1996, Uniques are an accepted part of society. They perform jobs just like ordinary people, and their being a part of our workforce and social order has lead to some pretty big leaps in technology, environmental safety, and universally available resources. To that end, while their timeline matches ours pretty closely, from the 70’s onward, things get pretty different.

You can read more about Mentor and Kinetic, their powers, and their story in their 'Better Know a Unique' entry on our blog: [link]

Yeah, I like me a good villain. And about how in Marvel things never really change? I might just have an answer as to why civil rights haven't won out yet....

We started bringing slaves into America in about the 1600s, possibly earlier, and the slaves where freed during the Civil War (The 1800s) so it took us roughly 200 years (give or take) to get people of a different skin-color their freedom. Then it took us another hundred years to get them their equal rights. And that's for people of a different skin color. So by that logic, how long would it take for us to get people with weird and scary super-powers equal rights?

Just saying. That may be why things never really change. Don't get me wrong, it'd be great if Civil rights won out, but given how we have a pretty bad track-record in that regard I don't see it realistically happening any time soon. As it is, what you're doing is refreshing, so I'm not really complaining, just pointing out why it makes sense for nothing to ever change in Marvel.

And as for your "Uniques" stuff, it dose look pretty cool, but I can't even see samples of you writing because the site's censored me out. It kind of sucks. I'd rather see a preview of your writing instead of just "buying blindly" if you know what I mean. Got any way for me to see it?

There are a few places you can get the first issue for free. You can download it from the Uniques official site [link] or you can try Drive-Thru Comics search for "Uniques" or even Wowio [link]

Well, I got to hand it to you, you seem to know what you're doing. Good luck with your writing. By the way, just curious, but do you have any designs for villains yet?

Oh, sure. I mean, we've had a bunch so far in the series. I just haven't done any full-on pin-up kind of things with them.

That's a good point. Of course, it's worth mentioning that if the world warmed up to Mutants completely, the X-Men writers would be hard-pressed to come up with more good stories. Well, I guess they could still fight ass-holes like Magneto, Apocalypse, and the Purifiers, guys who wouldn't WANT humans and mutants to live in harmony....

No reason the stories couldn't still be interesting after we all learn to coexist. And it doesn't mean there wouldn't still be tensions between the races. That's the kind of stuff we're tackling with Uniques - what comes next, in that area where most writers seem to think everything just gets boring.

I personally like the "world hates them" cliche as it's honestly more realistic then them being treated like celebrities. But this is a nice change of pace. Those two really do look like they could bust some ass.

I think it's a matter of time. At one point, yeah, everybody's afraid of these people born with crazy powers who sometimes look really strange and scary. But that's going to reach a head, it's going to happen fast, and at that point it goes one of two ways: Massive civil war that rages until one or the other group is wiped out or enslaved, or people learn to live with each other and recognize each other's civil rights.

In our world, civil rights won out. In Marvel's... nothing ever really changes. But I don't think it's realistic that you'd have a minority with such amazing powers and have the question of whether we recognize them as human beings with rights up in the air for so long. At some point relatively quickly, you're going to wind up on a path that leads you to a result. I'd say you get 2-3 decades at most before everything comes to a head and works itself out for better or worse.

Mentor reminds me of Kiefer Sutherland. *laugh*

It's good to see what Telepath's parents looked like. I'm sure the flashbacks during the comic will show more of them.

How's Issue 7 coming?

Yeah, you'll see a bit more of them over time. Really, they loom over much of what Telepath does in the book, and while they aren't entirely a visible entity, their presence is heavy in the context.

Awesome - simple costumes for psychics and she's not wearing a sexualized outfit. She even has a cape! ^_^ *Hugs the pic.*

Thanks! We're definitely trying to get away from the Thongs-N-Cleavage look for our girls and move them toward something practical and actually useful. You can still be hot and fully clothed, dangit!

*the Pic hugs you back*

*Is momentarily freaked by the pic hugging me back, then shrugs and just continues the hug.*

Good to see youv'e moving away from impractical costumes. Keep up the good work!

I like the character designs. Mentor has a wise, sage look to him. Kinetic looks a bit skinny, but not abnormally so.
I always wonder how superheros get into those thigh-high boots... but they do look nice!
What is Mentor holding in his right hand?

AdamWithers In reply to Cthulhette [2007-04-17 20:13:46 +0000 UTC]

It's a tonfa - a weapon used in martial arts 'stick' fighting. [link] Similar to escrima sticks or policemen's nightsticks. Both use non-lethal weapons that they can augment with their telekinetics (Kinetic even uses her cape as a weapon!).

Very cool. I can definitely see that Telepath's costume mirrors her mother's.

In actuality, Telepath's costume IS her mother's. She starts wearing it herself when the comic begins.

Why do I have this vivid image of Mentor coming home drunk, being hassled by "rolls in her hair" Kinetic, promptly giving her the booze man back hand......oh that wacky couple!
