Description A simple doodle that grew and grew into a time-suckingly-large project. Still, it was a lot of fun.

I'm a huge fan of the New Jedi Order series, and love the Vong as a group of villains - their wild living armor and weapons make for some great visuals. Problem is, I've virtually never seen them depicted as awesomely as I imagined them while reading. This was my attempt to rectify that.

Also, the new Legacy novel series blows hard, and was such a horrific dissapointment that it's nice to look back on the NJO and remember my hope for how things could have been. As a bonus, Luke Skywalker is easily one of my favorite characters in all fiction, so you can't go wrong, there.

Pencil drawing, colored in Photoshop.

I would like to see the Vong, but they are likely going to be too creepy for Disney. Still, even if the EU is totally scrapped(I'm pretty much good with scrapping all the post-Endor stuff, except Legacy. Still, I would use some of the better parts to make a new EU.)

It is, thank you. And I like to think of Legends as source material.

There's a lot I'd miss, but the beauty of fiction is I can keep liking what I like no matter what they do.

Wow, amazing job you did here! This is awesome!

The series really REALLY should have ended at the conclusion of the NJO. It solved all plot points, changed things up, it really couldn't be topped and most of all everything had been done by it's end, Vicious Imps, Crazy Alien Xenophobes, Political Intrigue, Criminal Underworld, and Extragalactic Invasion that nearly brought EVERYONE to their knees. That's when you let your characters ride off into the sunset, they earned it.

With that being said I loved the Vong as villains and they gave us new threats and villains that lasted longer than a year(Let's face it all the bad guy Imperials ran wild for a year then were hunted down or betrayed and killed(this does not count total character time as I know it took almost 2 1/2 decades to fully wipe out the Imperial threat) but most villains lasted a max of 3 books and died off. There were no long term Nemesis's out there. Then with the Vong we got Tsvong Lah, Nom Anor(who I loved as a character and couldn't help rooting for as the series progressed), Shimrra and a host of others that lasted well into 9 books but I'm digressing.

Wish I could find someone to do a painting of the Battles of Borleias, Bastion and Borosk

Yeah, as far as I'm concerned NJO WAS the end. They got as happy an ending as one could hope for in such difficult times, and lived happily ever after. Then fast-forward 100 years to the Legacy comics, which were a lot of fun to read.

Yeah same with me, though I couldn't get into the Legacy era, seemed like too much of a repeat. I'm an old Imperial so I was pretty happy with NJOs end and just imagined a Galaxy of relative peace after that.

It was and it wasn't. Yes, there was yet another Skywalker on the edge of the dark side, but it played out very differently from what we've seen before. It felt refreshing in the same way that Knights of the Old Republic did--storytelling in a Star Wars setting where anything could happen because none of the characters have any "Plot Armor" to protect them.

I can understand that. There were more than a few bantam books that suffered from that in my opinion(The Black Fleet crisis just to name three that could have been way better)

Honestly, I want the new Trilogy to cover the Vong war just because it would be so awesome... you're not the only one who loves the legacy series!

Great job on this BTW.

I am deeply scared about the new trilogy, but who knows? I seriously doubt they'll reference anything from the novels because the one thing it seems we can count on is that nobody making Star Wars cares about contradicting excellent source material.

I'm not Scared... I enjoyed the prequels, and maybe J.J can do a better job.

I still think the Vader/Obi-Wan duel towards the end of Revenge is the best out of all the movies.

I've always wondered; why did the Vong attack anyway?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AdamWithers In reply to thepalehorsman234 [2012-08-25 16:30:35 +0000 UTC]

Their world-ships were dying. They'd lived for generations as space vagabonds after abandoning their homeworld (long story there), and the ships that supported them - which were all living organisms themselves - were dying and unable to support the continued growth of the species. So, in secret, their commanders started actively searching for somewhere to inhabit. When they found the SW galaxy, they made up a story for their people that it was a gift of the gods to conquer and control, and so began the war.

They sold it to their people as a holy war because it gave them a common enemy and diverted attention away from how the rulership had completely f*ed things up for them. But the truth was their way of life was unsustainable and killing them slowly.

It was when the Vong themselves started to discover that they'd been lied to and that war wasn't a religious calling but a means of keeping them under control that the war started going badly for their generals.

and thats where the Jeedai Heresy came from?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AdamWithers In reply to thepalehorsman234 [2012-08-27 06:48:05 +0000 UTC]

In part, yes. But the heresy began before that when they started to see what the Jedi could do. Not all Vong agreed with the war from the beginning, and as they started hearing stories about the Jedi - and especially after Anakin Solo and others helped them and showed an understanding of their ways and sympathy - they started questioning why they had to fight and whether or not the Jedi were avatars of their gods sent to reveal the illegitimacy of the war.

But that's obviously a big simplification of a lot of complicated stuff that was all going on at the same time.

Very awesome...the NJO series had some epic battles, from early on (Luke duel-wielding his and Jacen's lightsaber to save them from a group of the Vong), all the way up to the final huge brawl in the end. If I can't see it on screen, at least guys like you can do it justice with art!

his voice
BTW if you like the NJO series, try looking up the audio books, (read by Jonathan Davis) his voice acting is absolute brilliance + sounds effects and soundtrack, Its like a film with no picture.

Find some extracts on you-tube, you will love guaranteed.

Pretty crazy awesome, man. Though I always imagined the Vong as more repulsive and asymmetrical, yours are the closest to how they're described, in my mind.

I've enjoyed pretty much every Star Wars book I've come across, personally. I love novels, and I love Star wars, and so I double love Star Wars novels. I just think it's cool that the story continues past the films.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AdamWithers In reply to Anvildude [2008-09-22 19:32:30 +0000 UTC]

I generally enjoy the novels too, I'm just too character-driven and when a story seems to go too far against the way a character has been established - especially if that person had been established over many years and well over a dozen novels - then I'm not as interested in that book. So I pass on the Legacy of the Force novel series.

Glad you like my Vong. And if you like, you can imagine the guy whose back is turned has a more asymmetrical face

Arcadiusd [2008-09-17 04:15:54 +0000 UTC]

The Vong are the most powerful enemy to ever be created in SW. I mean, so many people, so many known characters died because of them. From the Vong came many excellent villains. Onimi was surprising, never thought a jester would be the true overlord. Shimrra diverging from Onimi's control was awesome, I was sorta expecting the fight between Luke and Shimrra to take longer. Like, give the Scepter of Power some uber cool special powers. And who could forget the "lovable" Tsavong Lah, genocidal warlord, destructive commander, and all around baddie.
