Description
A simple doodle that grew and grew into a time-suckingly-large project. Still, it was a lot of fun.I'm a huge fan of the New Jedi Order series, and love the Vong as a group of villains - their wild living armor and weapons make for some great visuals. Problem is, I've virtually never seen them depicted as awesomely as I imagined them while reading. This was my attempt to rectify that.
Also, the new Legacy novel series blows hard, and was such a horrific dissapointment that it's nice to look back on the NJO and remember my hope for how things could have been. As a bonus, Luke Skywalker is easily one of my favorite characters in all fiction, so you can't go wrong, there.

I must say that I'm really impressed with this. Their Voduum armors are perfect. Especially the backs. It really looks like a crabβs exo-skeleton. And the amphistaff in itβs snake form is just awesome. I really like that you didn't gave the amphistaff any eyes it looks more alien that way (and if I can remember good the amphistaffs were part plant) Shadings are also great. I just love the light effect on Skywalker's saber. But I don't like that Vong's "shoe".
About the NJO I liked it very much. It was very dark and finally main characters stopped to be immortal. The gray are in the novels were a superb idea. The philosophic thoughts about Jedi, who is he, what is he, were the thing that made the books so great. Although Vergere seems to be same thing that Kreia was to Kotor 2. About Yuuzhan Vong being non-Star Wars well they are from another galaxy so Duh.. XD
P.s. Sorry about my english.

Your english is fine, Tatjusek - thanks a ton for the kind words. I spent a lot of time imagining the Vong, so this piece was a long time in planning as I read the books. I can understand about the 'shoe' - I wasn't really sure what to do, there, so went with something akin to the old medievil plate armor boots. Definitely not the best part of the image, but since each suit of Vonduun Crab armor is unique, we'll just assume that that guy's the only one with funny shoes
On Vergere: I saw her as the light side version of what Kreia was in KOTOR. Where Kreia believed in the 'end justifies the means' version of their philosophy, Vergere was saying that there IS a Dark Side, it IS deadly-dangerous and deeply corrupting, but it IS NOT something in the Force-- it is in YOU. And if you can be aware of the dark potential within yourself, then you can learn to use the complete Force without feeding and growing that darkness inside. Of course, the later Legacy novels completely destroyed the beauty of that message, but that's why I don't read them!

About Vergere:
Confronting Vergere with Kreia I meant they both have been crypto-sith. If I can call them. The message had to be destroyed. I know that it was beautiful, but they were things ling the famous "Sith eyes", Tenteraks creatures of the dark side, and even Yoda was able the hide on Dagobah cause the tree there was full of the dark side and masked his presence. This means that the dark side or something in the Force close to it really exists.
I believe that the old Jedi, Vergere, Kreia only saw a part of the bigger secret and the secrecy of the Force (if ever) is yet the be revealed.

I'd argue that what's seen as the 'Dark Side of the Force' is just a part of our own inability to percieve things past our own understanding. It's a reflection of the dark side of ourselves, and those inclined to give power to their demons see the Force in a categorically differently way than others. So, when they looked to Dagobah, they saw it differently than others might because of their own altered perceptions - not because there was a different kind of Force there.
It's like the idea of relative truth: what is true to one person in one particular place at one particular period of time may not be true to another. Yoda COULD hide in Dagobah's swamps, because the truth that was apparent to a Dark Side devotee changed the way he perceived the world around him. Complicated, yeah, and totally relative, but it's like Obi-Wan said - many of the truths we cling to depend entirely on our own point of view.
Yay! Philosophy!

Wow! I haven't actually read any of the SW novels, but I'm a huge enough fan of the films to know what's going on here.
Totally awesome! The Yuuzhan Vong are very Giger-esque, I love it!
My favorite thing about this is the moody, dangerous atmostphere and the amazing fog effects in the background. Makes the whole thing very creepy.
Well done!

I'm a huge fan of Luke and the Expanded Universe too, and man have you made this fan happy. Wish there were more out there like this one.
The detail and coloring in this one is spectacular. I just love it.

Luke never got over his short stint in the minor leagues. Had he not been angered by that vulgar ref's call on Boba's fast ball, he may have made it passed that fateful game.
That and you should never bat with a light saber

Whoa!!
Awesome NJO piece--we read so much of this type of action in that series, and it's just great to see an illustration of it (and with our favorite kick-ass Jedi Master, too!)! Great take on the YV and all that living weaponry they favored, and I, too, really like your version of "older Luke." Wonderful detailing, superb lighting--just awesome all around! Instant

Thanks for the kind words. I really appreciate them. Luke is just about my favorite character of all fiction, and actually had a relatively huge impact on me as a child, so it's nice to hear people digging my take on him. I'm REALLY glad people like my YV, too - they were fun to draw, but time-consuming, too. Always nice when hard work pays off.

Well I don't read the EU but I must say that I do like this illustration a lot. Anything showing Luke kickin' some bad guy butt is cool with me. These Vong guys put me in mind of HR Giger's Alien designs.
And what's wrong with the Force having gray areas? I think we saw what happen to the Jedi when they stuck with the simple black and white approach to that mystical energy field.

nice man, nice! i like especially the way you've captured luke's older face.
gotta be honest though, the NJO series was completely...uh, bad to me. It had little original ideas and i could read 'money grab' between each line. Doesn't matter though - the picture looks great.

AdamWithers In reply to ideation [2007-01-31 17:03:23 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I get that a lot from some SW fans. With some of the NJO books, I can feel you. But all the big books (Vector Prime, Star by Star, Destiny's Way and Unifying Force) were fantastic, for my money. And Traitor was the best SW novel I've ever read.
I guess it all comes down to whether or not you can really like the Vong, and how morally ambiguous you like your SW to be. Those were the two biggest complaints I heard - the YV were too unoriginal/too 'Un-Star Wars' and that there was too much grey area in the Force, now, and it should be more black and white. I oversimplify the arguments, because I wholly dissagree with them, but to each their own.
Still, bad as some thought the NJO was, can we all agree that Legacy is crap? I mean, the new comics are kind of interesting, but the LotF novels... *shudder*

I loved the NJO Series, and cannot stand LotF. They took the gritty but hopeful feeling that I got from NJO and turned it into full-on noir. That is not what I want from Star Wars. The "new" overall story arc is also just a rehash of the prequal trilogy of movies. I wish they had just gone on to something new instead of making another dark lord of the sith from the same family...

screenXsurfer In reply to nightshade37 [2008-01-08 23:52:49 +0000 UTC]
are you talking about Jacen? I mean yah it is really freakin un-original but only anakin was a dark lord from that family aside from jacen. But seriously they should just FORGET about the skywalker line in Legacy because it's old and they have to be like their parents or some shit. But jacen turning was obvious because 1. anakin died. 2. he was tortured by the YV 3. He had to make some pretty fucking bad decisions in the war. and 4. he had a dark jedi, vergere corrupting him. thats like...worse then was anakin ever did.
But the YV unoriginal? WTF? I can only think of the Zerg as a race being SOMEWHAT similar to what the Yuuzhan Vong. I mean they both say no to tech and go on organic only. But the ideas put into the Yuuzhan Vong are freakin awsome. Trading organs for symbiotic beings to increase abilities. Having massive worldships and creatures that can spit plasma fire(The only rip i can see from that are those bugs from Starship Troopers and i barely made the connection). And finally sword that can beat the lightsaber. Amphistaff fucking rocks.

Absolutely. Not only does it not fit the characters to have these things happening, but it boils down to a tired rehash of the same story we've seen before. Cheers for the NJO, Jeers for LotF.
But the Legacy comics series is quite good
