Description
A simple doodle that grew and grew into a time-suckingly-large project. Still, it was a lot of fun.I'm a huge fan of the New Jedi Order series, and love the Vong as a group of villains - their wild living armor and weapons make for some great visuals. Problem is, I've virtually never seen them depicted as awesomely as I imagined them while reading. This was my attempt to rectify that.
Also, the new Legacy novel series blows hard, and was such a horrific dissapointment that it's nice to look back on the NJO and remember my hope for how things could have been. As a bonus, Luke Skywalker is easily one of my favorite characters in all fiction, so you can't go wrong, there.

Final fights are hard in novels. With movies you can explode with all kinds of special effects, but in books you only want to spend so long writing a battle. I really liked the end of NJO, and wish that it hadn't been ruined by Legacy of the Force.

I would think Jacen would be a much more competent villain, but...he made jokes. A SITH LORD made jokes. Jacen = epic fail, he was a jerk. There is a fine line between being a villain and being a jerk. Believe me, I am an author. Jacen crossed that line

The problem stems from the fact that Jacen should never have been turned into a Sith Lord to begin with. None of it made any sense, and the constant hand of the all-knowing Editor and His Mandate was obvious from start to finish.

Bad day for Luke. But not nearly as bad as the "Light of the Force" days he'll have, what with his hot wife being killed by his deranged nephew and all. The Vong are really killer looking in this piece.

Pfft. All that Legacy of the Force nonsense is unreadable garbage. Far as I'm concerned, Star Wars ends with NJO and doesn't pick up until the next century with the Legacy comics.

Agreed. My theory is that they all came up with LotF while on some sort of five minute spliff break and the reason no body shot the idea down is they were all high at the time. It makes no sense otherwise. Anyway the Vong look cool. And apparently they work well with the "Jeedai" in the Legacy comics. So it isn't all bad, just most of the new stuff. Sorry I got side-tracked: your artwork is cool man, your style reminds me of comic books.

I figure they got together after NJO and wanted to do something that was kind of radical, but SAFE radical (re: let's wreak bloody havok while rushing back to the old status quo). So we get LotF, which is basically the same tired old Star Wars story we've had over and over again. Ooh, ooh, new Sith! Oh, my-- a Jedi falls to the dark side? And it's a Skywalker? No way!!! Oh, and now HE'S a Sith Lord?!? I'd have never guessed!
Which is bad enough, but when you add the fact that most of the characters are acting completely contrary to their established persona, you get sloppy crap writing.
I don't mind the side-track at all, and am glad you liked the picture enough to want to talk about it. And my style IS comic bookey, because I'm a comic artist

Awesome. The Yuuzhan Vong always reminded me of a strange conglomerate of hippies (no machinery), bikers (the general bad-ass-nes), and Aztecs (the pain-worshipping), but their from Frickin' SPACE! In short, they are one of the most original and dynamic groups added to the Expanded Universe since its inception. But they blew up Ithor AND killes Chewbacca, so you can't really forgive them either. Still they got totally screwed over by the New Sith Empire in the legacy series. And speaking of that, they bloody made Cade turn to the dark side! Oh, yes, that's original. It's not like we've used the Skywalker-turns-to-Dark-Side-and-then-redeems-himself plot more than FIVE TIMES ALREADY! ENOUGH! WE GET IT! THEY'RE APPARANTLY ALL EVIL! CAN WE PLEASE JUST MOVE ON ALREADY! Yeah sorry about that, got a little carried away. Props for being able to draw people with awesome perpective and pose and still have them look canon (I swear Luke looks just like Luke in this art). In short, I think your shit's cool.

They've been done a couple times, but I never felt like the official drawings I'd seen really captured the terror and horror the characters were supposed to illicit. It's the problem with books - every reader has their own idea of what the things should look like, and any 'official' image that comes later will invariably dissapoint a fair percentage of the readers.

I thought the Vong were a really interesting species, like nothing that had been in Star Wars before or since, it really forced the Star Wars EU to evolve and change, which I thought was great.
I also found Luke became one of my favourite characters simply because how powerful and wise he really is, something that he hadn't yet achieved in the films.
Excellent depiction of the Yuuzhan Vong here, they're really very alien and terrifying, and seem ready to overwhelm the tiny infidel.
the angle of the image gives it a distorted, fractured feeling, it sort of reminds me of a zombie image, all these undead surrounding some helpless innocent.
You've managed to give Luke a Mark Hammill look, yet in your own style.

Thanks a lot, and I totally agree with you on the Vong. They were the best thing to happen to Star Wars since Timothy Zahn!
And it's an interesting analogy you picked out with the zombie idea. It actually works, in a lot of ways. Not only were the Vong a single-minded, overwhelming, droning force, but a lot of the worst fights had that feel of the better Zombie movies. Namely, that the small band of heroes was being slowly outnumbered and pushed into a corner until there was no way out. The feeling of isolation, of abandonment, of a world gone mad... it all works pretty well.
Of course, the Vong were MUCH more dangerous than zombies, but there you go. Thanks a lot for the comments - I love it when people take the time to say something

You know, your Vong look a lot like a combination between the Necrons from the Warhammer 40,000 series and the Dremora from Elder Scrolls 3 Morowind. This is quite the lovely little pic you have here, even if it is missing the Mandalorian umph.
