Description The three leads of the comic Preacher: Tulip O'Hare, Jesse Custer, and Cassidy the Irish Vampire.

This is easily my #2 comic of all time. To me, there's Sandman and there's Preacher. Everything else falls in line behind them. It's poignant, it's beautiful, it's meaningful, and it's also hillarious, violent, thought-provoking, and disturbing on many, many levels.

It's an Irish atheist's love-letter to the American West and the great Westerns, and it's as good as comics get. Buy it, people. Seriously.

Hehe, well my name is actually Stefan. Large Adam was a type of crash test dummy! Anyway. Looking forward to see more of your work!

Amazing fan art of the #1 comic of all time! You have to admit that Preacher is objectively far superior to Sandman? Pracher is what inspired me to start writing comics. I was just blown away by the fact that such creative swagger was allowed within a mainstream setting. I'm currently enjoying Ennis' latest creator-owned project "the Boys" which amazing also.

I'm enjoying Boys a lot too. And whether I prefer Sandman or Preacher depends on the day and my mood. They're such different stories and told in such different ways that it's hard to compare them.

Boys is great, although I do feel that good ol' Ennis takes his dark antics a wee bit far sometimes (I'm referring to the Love Sausage character, which WAS hilarious, but a bit too close to being silly I think.)

If you're a fan, I'd love to see you do Spider Jerusalem from Transmetropolitan some time.

Anyways, thanks for all the great art Mr. Withers!

AdamWithers In reply to JohnnyCastle [2008-10-15 21:16:05 +0000 UTC]

I agree that Boys can get caught up in its own perversions - especially early in the series. It's found more of a voice lately, though, and more importantly: it seems to have a point, now. It's about something other than just random acts of sexual absurdity.

Thanks and you're welcome. Maybe I'll get that Spider out, someday-- though I'd have to do his faithful assistants as well. Wouldn't seem right otherwise

That's good to hear. I've only read the first two trades, the third just got released here in Norway so I'm planning on picking it up tomorrow.

And you should definately throw the faithful (a far more flattering adjective than the one Spider used) assistants into the mix. Especially when considering the way Yelena gradually becomes such a central character. And maybe the freakishly cat with the loose bladder can make an appearance too?

I just finished reading Volume 1 of Preacher and I loved it. Out of curiosity, what happened to the Preachers left eye? (Im one of those types who likes finding things out early)

Well I'm one of those types who refuses to tell! You'll find out in a later volume - 6, I believe. It's called "War in the Sun." And it's awesome.

I love all Ennis' comics, but Preacher is still my favorite, partialy to the Dillon's ability to draw emotions...

Anyway, I realy admire your piece-de-art, a different look on quite mean characters.
Brings up good memories

Good job mate

Thanks. I'm glad it pleased a fan of the book - I'm a bit of a departure from Dillon's plain, direct, and beautiful style, but I like to think I'm close enough to hit the characters well.

I'm digging this a whole lot. You really nailed the nature of the three here, and with your own style to boot! Just like you commented to one fella, they're hard characters to get down right--especially the Reverend. The linework is awesome (especially the fold rendering about the knees), the coloring is so skillfully done, and I love the Arseface shirt. Haha.

Thanks so much for the detailed comment! This was a lot of fun to do, and as it all fell together, it just got more and more fun. I'm glad you like it, and glad you caught the Arseface shirt. I like hiding little things like that in my art, just for the people who'll catch it and like it

I have been actually thinking about buying the first collected graphic novel for this series. All I have heard is how good the "Preacher" series is. I just finished reading the "Wanted" collected edition from Top Cow which I thought was a very good read.

AdamWithers In reply to broken-nib [2007-07-02 16:43:54 +0000 UTC]

If you liked Wanted, you should at least give Preacher a taste. I always tell people to get through the first two TPB's of Preacher before rendering their opinion. The second book, 'Until the End of the World' is still possibly my favorite of the whole series.

I'll be honest with you, Andrew: I'm flat-out SHOCKED that you haven't read this, yet. You would absolutely love it, I promise. It's a rough ride, but totally worth it. I'll even let you borrow my trades if it means getting you to read it, I'm that serious.

WHOA. Amazing how you totally nailed these characters in a style that's so different from Steve Dillon's... very impressive.

I have to say I was kinda disappointed by the second half of Preacher, though. Maybe I'll reread the entire run sometime and see how it holds up, but after the powerful stuff in the first few storylines (All in the Family most of all), the second half was just... I dunno, mostly too silly.
