Origin: Haementerror is a corruption of ‘haementeria’, a genus of leeches. The design was inspired by the sandworms of Dune, as well as the (original) Sarlacc from Return of the Jedi. It shares biological features with lampreys as well. ‘The spice of life’ is a direct reference to the drug produced by sandworms in Dune, which is sometimes called “the spice”. The glowing venom, and specifically its connection to spirits, is intended to be the Pokémon equivalent of ectoplasm.
