There always seemed to be some kind of vaguely implied set of conceptual relations underneath (what I call) the true legendary pokΓ©mon.Note the similarity to the tree of life from the Kabbalah
True legendary are combinations of
-Important back-legend, extremely powerful(670/680 stats), version mascot
-part of a lesser elemental trio (580 stats)
-guardian/master of a trio
The rest of legendary pokemon are either (usually 600stats):
-fairy-like cute event (100 in all) (Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, Shaymin...)
-standalone powerful, unique origin (Deoxys, Heatan, Genesect..)
-mythical duo (Lati@s, Moon duo)
It all came together into this perfectly with generation IV.
And the new true legendaries don't seem to fit anywhere at all, further showing how generation IV was the first completing generation and that generation V is a real new beginning.

Connecting Gen IV with the rest (part of divided Tree of Legend folder text):
Ironically besides the almost identical look, the lake guardians are surprisingly different.
Mesprit flies away at first sight, roaming the region, while Uxie seems like it is in hybernation.
After noticing this, it dawned on me,
The lake guardians are pixifications (lol) of the I, II, III trios.
-Azelf represents Will. The birds are the only trio that reside at places they chose.
-Uxie represents Knowledge and has closed eyes. The golems are sealed behind puzzles. Both are defensively oriented.
-Mesprit represents Emotion and flees. The Beasts are the only trio that roams the region after meeting them. Mesprit has balanced stats, the beasts are the only trio that balance out each others stats.
This connection completes the Tree of Legend so far.

the biggest hint as to whether this tree will grow, should be the trio. Can't wait to see what they've got for us.
Maybe something contrasting the golems or birds like the musketeers were to the beasts.
And also if there will be "another Arceus" in the next few gens or if it comes back to Arceus.
One thing I realized about the kami is that one of the is single type, while the weather legends, one of them is dual type, and they fit as you wrote to make a sum of 3 types each
Ground - Ground - Flying (Groudon-Landorus)
Water - Electric - Flying (Kyogre-Thundurus)
Dragon - Flying - Flying (Rayquaza-Tornadus)
but the problem is that Landorus is superior stat-wise, and Rayquaza to the other guys.

The connections are the same, but they are more clear now and have these smooth transitions, especially the lower 2 triangles, which looked nothing like 2 intertwined triangles earlier even though I wanted them to be.

Ah right. From what I remember I actually prefer how it was before haha, I liked the pixelness of it. But it's cool either way! Read your bulbapedia article too it was really interesting, keep it up!

but from the looks of it so far...
the musketeers would obviously turn out to be one of the three trios that make up the central columns,
while Reshiram/Zekrom/Kyurem look like they would be on the bottom where Kyogre/Groudon/Rayquaza are in this one (except its reverse with Kyurem being inherently inferior instead of superior).
That would mean we can look forward to gen VI and VII for
-a 580 casual trio each
-3 "trio masters", related or not (at least 2 of them mascots of gen VI)
-an epic structure at the top (3 of them mascots of VII), like the 7 members of "Arceus" here.
The only anomaly currently is Keldeo, the musketeers apprentice. 2 theories for this.
-the next 580trios will have a secret 4th member too
-the "trio masters" will be replaced by "4th members" like it.
As for the Kami, they pretty much seem like a separate group akin to Lati and moon duo, except that they made another step by giving them their own parent-figure with a stronger Landorus.

I'm very curious to see what legendaries they add next, and wheher they will start to fit on this somehow, or whether they will all be a second tree.
Or of course, they will not remotely have any connections between themselves, crushing this theory lol.

Ho-oh created the beasts in the legend of the burned tower, yes.
I wanted to place Ho-oh above them, but I cannot do it in 2D LOL, because then Arceus would be at the bottom and the surface legends (Kyogre/Grodon) at the top...
This picture is not about who created who.
Its about a pattern or a system behind 4 generations of legendaries, so there is a nice variety and contrasts.
Maybe gamefreak had these legendaries planned for long like this, maybe not. I just noticed there is some kind of connections and this is the result.
