Description
I kind of wish I didn't have to pick between traditional and digital for this (aren't things like Anatomy and Perspective kind of useful in both?) but I went with Traditional since that's what I do.Pose is in the gallery here:
You can find more perspective and foreshortening poses in my gallery in this folder !
Pardon spelling mistakes and general rambling. I promised *shuu-bunni I'd make one of these.
DON'T FEAR THE FORESHORTENING! ATTACK IT WITH VIGOR!

Thank you sooo much for this tutorial!!! I've always had a hart time with foreshortening since my brain naturally wants to make the body much longer than the head but by thinking like this my drawings improved after just a few minutes!!

I just wanted to drop by and let you know, I really appreciate the tutorials you do, not to mention the fantastic stock you share with us all. Your tutorials are just what I love to see--something that actually teaches you how to go about drawing something and how to think about it. All too often I see tutorials like "and then you add the base color... and now I'm adding shadows where shadows belong!" and they're just so terribly useless, but you really do provide refreshing tips and advice for growing artists.
Thanks, and keep it up. : )

THIS IS AWESOME C: seriously, i think i have a pretty decent handle on foreshortening, in fact i have been subconsciously using a lot of the techniques you mentioned! lol but i still find it pretty intimidating, and end up kind of cutting myself short and going for easy poses! D: so yeah, this is a great tutorial! C: i am going to share it around, cause i think a LOT of artist struggle with this! (myself included)

Your approach is similar to mine, and it was through stock like yours that has encouraged me to work harder on drawing more figures in perspective instead of static head-on images all the time. Nicely made and explained.

This is awesome. The trick about seeing JUST shapes at the beginning is one I use a LOT. Even when I'm not using a reference. Sometimes when I am using a reference, I'll sketch out the basic shapes (things like major muscles, rib cage, spine, what have you) over the top of the reference and then I can see where each bit sits in relation to all the other bits.

this was very helpful, thank you! I haven't drawn humans in ages and want to get back into it, and this reminded me that it's not entirely as scary (and impossible) as I make it out to be. I've actually successfully used the grid approach before, a LONG time ago, and this reminded me that I did manage to get it right a couple times so I shouldn't be so scared to try again.
Plus you have some great tips here. Thanks!
