Officially designated as a Prototype Destroyer to quell criticism of a more militarized fleet, only a single technology demonstrator was built. The first ship to be named the USS Formosa, it carried an NX registry of 2801. However, the unfitted out space frames of 11 other hulls were constructed - in secret. These hulls were to be stored in classified locations across various fleets, and were only to filled out in case of a major crisis that required both rapid, and heavy fire support in case the existing fleet of peacetime, explanatory and science vessels were overwhelmed in a conflict. Which, according to intelligence projections, they would be.

The Formosa class can draw a clear design linage, first from the Siam class, and subsequently the Rhodesia class. Improvements and design changes are obvious: the more streamlined saucer section torpedo launchers, the addition of nacelle mounted torpedoes, and the recent complete redesign of the saucer section shuttle bay for the Formosa class.

Armed with eight forward and four aft facing torpedo launchers, the Formosa class could overwhelm an opponent, or opponents, with a single torpedo barrage.

The clearly grey marked removable hull plates located between the shuttle bay and the impulse engine are reserved for future expansion, and provide a test bed space for new technology. There the fitting of an elevated mega-phaser system as seen on the Miranda class can technically be added, but this has never been tested.

The Formosa class has two fully fitted out impulse engines on the saucer section, giving amazing sub-light acceleration speeds. This provided true rapid response when the ship enters a solar system. Because of its slim hull profile, the class also enjoys excellent maneuverability at sub-light speeds - a major advantage in combat. The slim cross-section of the vessel also aids in maximizing shield coverage.

The Formosa class is unique as the saucer section can separate from the engineering (or battle) section. This is achieved with the implementation of the latest technology, and not explosive bolts - as was implemented on the Constitution class. As such, the Formosa class can separate, and re-dock multiple times without the need for repair at a star base. However, the saucer section would be lacking warp drive capability - although it could "coast" on warp when separated from the engineering section.

The shuttlebay on the Formosa class carries two Workbee repair craft, six type 5 shuttles, and has the distinction of carrying three fighter craft. Indeed, two cargo bay flaking the bridge which open to above are reserved for experimental Tactical Defence Drones. There are three drones stored per bay. The drones adopt strategic positions around the ship and lay down covering fire. If the Formosa class neutralized the attacking threat, these can be quickly called back and tractored back into their storage bays. Should the Formosa class have to flee the area, these can self-destruct as soon as the ship has gone to warp. These pods are armed with phasers.

Any ship that enters into battle with the Formosa class will be in for the fight of its life.
