Description
Credit to kevinveldar/marcusstarkiller/captshade for the parts (along with any others I may have missed). You guys are awesome to release + upload all that stuff for us to use.Shown above: The ship's A and B configurations. I couldn't decide on which I liked best, so I uploaded both.
Another Movie-era design, named after the famous explorer Amerigo Vespucci, who besides charting much of South America is (falsely) reported to have named the continent of 'America' after himself, though the historical dubiousness of this claim has been brought up by many. Quite the guy, eh?
Oh, and it's not a flying saucer this time. I swear. It has an engineering hull.
Concept for this ship was a small, almost Oberth-like science vessel that could warp around to various locations within or near to Federation territory and chart them. A significant portion of the engineering hull is devoted to the main deflector, while lots of the saucer is devoted to research space, cargo bays, and two large shuttlebays for away missions and other planet-bound activities.Β The ship's weapons are nothing to write home about, while the shields are mostly there to protect against radiation. Nevertheless, it does have two Photon Torpedo launchers mounted to the front, primarily used to fire probes.

It's probably good they named the Americas without translating Amerigo Vespucci's name - otherwise today we'd be "The Unites States of Henry". True fact.

In that case, no kidding. I had no idea!
Though sometimes I do wonder how history would've turned out if the Italians had to call us that every time they interacted with them.

Historical correction. The New World was named America not by Vespucci himself , but because this happened:

And I find this hull to be nice and small and functional and expeditious, which is exactly what a dedicated scout/light explorer should be. Giving it LN-91s will help it cover lots of previously-uncharted sector space quite efficiently.

Noted and corrected. Thanks for that!
That's the idea, yeah. A big exploration ship is only really useful if you're going on deep-space missions, or in sectors far away from resupply and support where you may expect anything. Dedicated research needs dedicated research starships which are light on everything except what they need, which is why these two designs exist.
It was a more complicated design than I thought. Since the impulse engines are on both dorsal and ventral sides of the saucer, I had to improvise and split the neck in half instead of keep it all in one piece. I think it was worth it, though.
