Description
High altitude craft flypast skyrigs. I came up with the skyrig idea whilst concepting the flying craft and wanted a backdrop image to show off the vehicle in flight. Though a seperate project, the two kinda go well together.Sidenote- The skyrig idea was depicting that fairytale castle in the sky, not to dissimilar to ESB's cloud city but with a mix of heavy industry similar to Kevin J Anderson's jovian gas mining facilities in Saga of the Seven Suns.

Somehow this is very 'right' as it is & to me shows a sure and interesting hand writing.
You could take it to the next step, which could be making it more photorealistic, going for the highlights, the details and the composition would be entirely deserving of that. But the style fits the subject in some rough way, even if you don't really get the shape of the ships.
What I don't understand is why the vehicles both sport an '8'. They don't look much like mil squads or so. More like racers, that despite having the same paint job, should have different starting numbers ... so ... you copy pasted.
I didn't understand the rear part of the vessel. Or is it the left wing fin? But, as I wrote, that does not really matter for the work as a whole.
What I like most is how the ships seem to glide 'on' the clouds. Not that you think they surf them, but cruise close above that second surface of Earth, one story up, the top of the clouds.

The 8 however could actually be representing something else, a logo maybe. This may even be a totally different planet, race or society where the 8 represents a different meaning. I guess I was at the time not really thinking about it enough, again I am leaving it up to the viewer.
But then again that mey be a poor excuse. There is a side to me I find frustrating, that side would be where I could do with putting more thought into what I paint.
The most interesting thing I find about this piece is the title "Skyrig" as a concept it has hugh potential to explore further.

Yes to the Skyrig. I guees I overlooked how much it adds to the notion of the "second, above ground layer" that the ships are gliding through.
Not so sure with the 8. The thing is that the viewer will always relate to what he knows, he or she has almost no choice in that. If you as an artist give him an eight, it is very hard for him to find the freedom to see it as something else but an eight, except if you give a lot of context to bolster that unhinging of the usual meaning of that symbol. It is so with any symbol. And especially with the Skyrigs, you also skillfully utilize the palette of known, strongly associated symbols everybody carries around with himself. But the eight, most of all, says something else for this image: it's Earth. Or at least a human colony not too remote in time from us. Because they use our numbers. The rigs say something similar but nothing else says it as strongly as the 8.
I don't think that's wrong. You would have used another symbol if you would NOT have wanted that I guess. So that means, thinking about it or not, the thing you meant ends up being visible on the paper. And for a sketch, I stand by how 'right' it all is. If you'd rework it, then thinking out exactly where these guys come from, who they are, what they are doing is going to be the extremely worthwhile last mile to make it conceptually sound.

Ah, I instantly love anything with an artist's note that references authors and abbreviations that are so wonderfully nerdy that my "mainstream" friends would go all blank-eyed at. ^_^
I adore the way you did the clouds. Very impressionistic and floaty (for lack of a real word), makes the sharp lines of the craft and skyrig really stand out. Has the effect of making what is fantastical seem real and the mundane clouds seem otherworldly. I see other comments disagree, and it seems you took that advice for the follow-up "On the Run", but I prefer them here. Not that there's anything wrong with them in OTR, just different.

Thank you friend. I think with this one the concept skyrig needs exploring further.

Love it! It may not contain the polish of a finished piece, but i love sketchy concept art! Love the composition and colours and the scale you've given the piece

This is very successful in many ways, color, composition, design, etc. You've really created a wonderful atmosphere. I might suggest that the clouds and contrails have a more blended airy look rather than the hard edged spheres. I personally found the spherical texture distracting and thought you might get even more depths by softening the bg a tad bit..

Hi friend.
Interesting you say that I was hoping at one point to do a 3D rendering. If you have the application to do this be my guest. Id be interested to see a 3D view on this craft, created from just a simple scribble.
To help you go into my scrapbook and you will find a front elevation.
I will be interested to see the results. It will be fun collaborating.

SWEET! sure thing- ive got this huge presentation in three days- but afterwards this week I will start working on it. I work with 3ds Max 2011, as well as a bunch of other texture programs. I think it will turn out well.

been working on it between my simulation work here at work. got a couple things coming together I should have a draft for you to approve/ give pointers on. Overall been crazy busy but having fun working on the model when I am not supposed to be designing the simulator.
