There's some great epic scale running through a lot of your work, and a 70s/80s scifi aesthetic I'm diggin' too. Nice one

Great concept and composition! That is one big arch for what must be bigger space jump...feels like mega-stonehenge in space.

Why thank you very much!

When painting this piece I kept thinking about Roy Batty's quote "I watched C beams glitter near the Tenhauser gate" and the words "Tenhauser Gate" kept running through my mind, you know, something of an awsome spectacle. Which is what I tried to capture in this piece.

Excellent, I've seen only a few artists' interpretations of Tenhauser Gate and they're usually some little techie stargate hoop or something. Batty never stated that it wasn't some ancient monolithic structure...very cool.

There was some inspiration there behind Batty's words that have stuck in my mind for many a year now. his words were poetic, romantically sad. i had to try and create a piece to illustrate what he said.

thank you my freind.

I dont know myself sometimes lol!. I think the key is not to get bogged down and fussy during the process. As an artist you know when you over do it.

Thank you for your comment.

I like it very much - it instantly reminded me of Homeworld. Neat trick with the planet below - it really gives the picture a sense of scale.

I don't want to criticize but I have a feeling that the picture is slightly "crowded" - especially the ship's surroundings.

And one major complain: why there isn't more of it?!
Very nice work, really.

For a moment i would agree, - but why I think this picture works so well, is there's about four or five planes of view, and they're each tugging on the eyes of the viewer, but overall the eye gets drawn back to the gateway, the extra clutter just adds to its domination.

Snazz84 [2012-05-14 22:15:19 +0000 UTC]

You've definitely achieved the feeling of vastness. Somehow a lot of space art seems to lose that feeling, and just becomes yet another static, emotionless image. But your work always puts across that idea of space being limitless and full of things so incredible that even to see them can't fully describe or explain them.

Btw, I don't know if you have any of your work available as prints, but if you don't you definitely should. The best pieces of art to have on a wall are the ones that you can see day in day out and still find something new or that keep you trying to figure them out.

AdrianMarkGillespie In reply to Snazz84 [2012-05-14 23:21:31 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for your kind thoughts and comments on this piece. I think its important to keep certain things obscure yet atmospheric to pertain the emotion and wonder. While certain parts shoukd be sharp and detailed keeping a certain painterly look helps to achieve the results i have been searching for for so long in other experimental pieces. I think I may of nailed it and become happy with the result.

I do have them available to buy in print through this site. However if you were thinking through another means, then something can be arranged.

What is your inspiration for this idea?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AdrianMarkGillespie In reply to Severin101 [2012-05-14 17:45:15 +0000 UTC]

I guess the inspiration stems back to wanting to capture the feeling of vastness and a somewhat awsome even that haunting beauty to an image. I love creating the look of epicness and infinity. Originally the piece wasnt going to have the ship in and it was a wider picture, but I sized it down as there was something going on at the side that seemed to confuse what the viewer was looking at. Also I felt I needed something else in the foreground to gauge some idea on how big the background structure was.

The idea I guess is similar to a porthole or a stargate what have you. But something more ancient in origin maybe built by an advanced civilisation. The piece was drawn as it seams to rise high above the planet. Actually its quite distant, hence its oscurity of detail. Because it's so vast it seems its rising out of the below planets atmosphere.
