Description
"I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tanhauser Gate"It's the romance of Roy Batty's soliloquy that conjures up for me a far off exoctic place in the cosmos. I imangined the gate to be of ancient origin, built eons ago by a space faring civilisation. I imagined the c-beams to be interstellar arc lights of unknown origin and were intentionally incorporated to help give the gate an ominous yet mysterious feel. We see Roy in the lower forground looking out in awe at this feat of wonder .

You are visualizing perfectly the Words that Rutger Hauer used to explain why every single Life is so important.
Why every single Second of Existence is so important.
Why Human Life is so important.
That no one can take from you what you experienced. What you have seen. What you have heard.
Our Memories define us. What we are.
As Humans, we are doing all we can to defend our Identity.
That Replicant understood that all and he wanted to transmit that Information before he died.
With that he proved that he - even artificial - was a human Being.
Your Work is extraordinaire. You took the Chance of the Moment to visualize what was on your Mind. You became a Witness of your own Mind in an outstanding Manner.
That is what Art is : A Witness of the Evolution of Humankind.
You catched that.

We sci-fi writers try our best to capture the grandeur of the unknown. Our tools are infinite combination of words that, wit a bit of luck and a lot of work, can be shaped into a phrase that inspire visions, like Batty's "Tears in the rain" solliloquy. The same can be said about drawing and painting. A single image can explode in a million ideas, memories and feelings.
But having both things at the same time? That's Art at its best.
The character of Batty experienced in his short lifetime a million wonders. What are the Tannhauser Gates. A promise of ultimate redemption like Wagner's opera? An alien world? A mean of intellestelar travel?
We don't need to know. We need to feel it. To see it in Roy's eyes, to experience the wonder of wonders.
Keeping the mistery enhances our perception of the work. We are again like a child: frightened and delighted at the same time.
Like Roy Batty.
Until now we had only the words. Now we have an image that absorbs it and complete the vision,
Art at its best.
Thank you for this amazing image.

Thank you Losrandir for your compliments. I am both pleased and flattered by your critique. Roy's life was both frightening and sublime and we only get a short but intense glimps of what he was all about in the end. Despite his combat background why should we think that his soliloquy was purley a millitary account. No, Roy wanted more life, more life to experience once more those wonderful visions, like a child again. His speach at the end of his life is heart renderingly nostalgic, both tragic and wonderful, that you end up mourning for his short life and the protagonist becomes the very enemy. David Peoples who wrote those words with Rutger Haurs collaberation are geniuses. In my opinion the best death scene in cinematic history, purely for the message that Roy paints at the end of all things. Thank you again for understanding.
Kind Regards,
Mark

Β It is very interesting to see how many interpretations there are of the meaning of Battys soliloquy -- what he meant by the Tannhauser Gate and by the C-Beams -- and I have seen an interpretation where the Tannhauser Gate appeared to be an artificial, human-made structure. You have a completely different interpretation of the what he had seen, making this completely unique to others.Β I love the fact you have Batty a very small part of the beauty of the scene, as he stares up in awe at the gate before him, at the majesty of the skies, giving him personality and character.
Β Brilliant attention to detail and wonderfully designed unnatural structures that brings the artwork to life, matching well with that small section of the soliloquy.

I recently watched it on DVD, and I need to get another copy because my copy is screwed up, and I stumbled upon this picture. I think of Roy Batty could see this, he would be smiling. Nice job!

I had always thought he said 'seabees', the nickname for CB's, the naval construction battalions who rapidly consolidate beachheads. This is good too.

I was kinda composing it from an emotional side, to try and capture that awsome spectacle of wonder that Batty had left to give.

Bladerunner is one of my favourite films. I especially liked the ending. This image took my breath away. It brings a whole lot more dimension and depth to Roy Batty's soliloquy - the sheer imagination of this is just truly amazing. I have been searching for a meaning or some sort of imagery to Roy's description of the things he has seen, and it is extremely interesting and refreshing to see your creative interpretation of it (ancient origin! I love it), not to mention the skills involved in the execution. Lots of emotion and mystery here, despite my queries answered, but it feels just, just right! Great work!

What I love is how that speech was improvised by Rutger Hauer -- particularly the "like tears in rain" line.
You've come up with quite a nice interpretation here. Good stuff.

Wow. I really dig this. There's an epic scale, and you've managed to not fall into the trap of piling on detail that wouldn't be visible at this distance.

This is great, I recall our convo on [link] about your inspiration for Galactic Gateway and you made a sequel! Too cool, I had a feeling Tanhauser was an ancient structure as well, similar to the huge Forerunner architecture in the Halo franchise.
