The logic of dreams can sometimes be disturbing, and your image is not without its disturbing elements.
Yet you can see that the whole is harmoniously balanced, in spite of its ambiguities.
Is that a reference to Lewis Carrol's Rocking Horse Fly?

no reference... just my crazy brain.
this image took a long time to complete. it was a challenge to make these disparate elements connect...

*ROFL*!! I love it!
Oddly enough, a bit of mythology comes to mind - the forging of mjollnir, the hammer of Thor. A dwarf was hired/threatened/tricked into creating a weapon worthy of Thor. Thor's tricky, nasty half-brother, Loki, didn't want Thor to have it. As such, he transformed himself into a biting fly (horsefly) and set about making the dwarf's life miserable during the forging.
The dwarf did take the time to swat at the fly - which is why mjollnir is so short-hafted that it takes the strongest of the gods to wield it - it's just too awkward for anyone else.
So. What this story speaks to me of is a musician performing at or above their peak, being pestered by an annoying, biting horsefly, stumbling down the 'steps' of song - and yet still creating, even with flubs and hiccups and failure...
*wry grin* Came as a gestalt - takes a lot longer to write it down than to think it.

For some reason, it makes me think of dreams within a dream. The dreamer is "waking up" from a somewhat plesant dream only to find himself in a surreal nightmare and is trying to go back to sleep and into the more pleasant dream. I don't really know why it makes me think of that, but it just does. Besides, it explains the title lol. Great painting. It's too bad you can never really see the nice effect of black light paints in a picture.

perhaps my new title more aptly describes the feeling you have shared here...?
thank you so much for your thoughtful critique! i really appreciate it.
actually, i took this picture with black lights, so this is pretty much what it looks like but a little less colorful because my camera and computer are not capable of reproducing ultriviolet colors.
this is an example of one of my works in both regular and black light, so you can get an idea:

I don't see waking up here, but your picture is beautiful and interesting. I like such colors.

you have a good point... and i've changed the title to more aptly reflect the mood i was in while painting it. for me, the title is a last-moment thing, and sometimes it takes a bit of searching for me to fall upon the right one!

It has such a great flow, really great work here. Like a dream, most definitely. Just a jumble of fragmented thoughts, for me... I'm digging it.

it looks a kind of a surreal world or a dream; came from deep of your underconscious.. these kind of an image set can only come together in a dream..
