History
family life | 0-6 ☾
Elk was the first born of a three kit litter to a kittypet-gone-loner named Quincy. His siblings, Pansy and Whinchat, lived with their mother, as well as their grandmother, Abby, and travelled around in wilderness around Twolegplace. The kits learned to hunt and picked up on the life of a loner without too much problem, though their long-time kittpet mother and grandmother seemed to struggle a bit more with it. Quincy often told them stories of their father--that he was a clan cat who lived in the area, and that he was part of a huge community of cats who all lived together and took care of each other. The idea sounded nice to Elk, who even as a kitten, thought he could have done with more food in his belly, and more food in his mother's belly, and sleeping in the same safe place every night sounded good as well. Although Elk wanted to join the clan cats, during their travels they never seemed to find the clans, though Elk always held out hope.

As the oldest of the litter, Elk was also the bossiest, often telling his siblings what to do and taking charge as the leader of the three during games and hunts. He didn't falter with his duty even on the day Quincy and Abby went out for a hunt and didn't return, having to tell his siblings with a heavy heart that he didn't think their family would be returning--but if they waited in the den then they would starve to death. He insisted that the best course of action was to go out and look for their family, and while he could convince Pansy to join him, Whinchat refused to follow. Leaving their sister behind, the brothers set out on a search for what was left of their family. Their search turned to just travelling as the brothers moved on, surviving how they could, eating when they could find food and sleeping when they could find shelter. It wasn't glamorous, but it wasn't lonely, and Elk was grateful Pansy had come with him, even if he missed Abby, Quincy and Whinchat. However, nothing good seemed to last forever:  their travels lead them to a river, but with stepping stones, Elk was sure it wouldn't be an issue, and for him, it wasn't. His brother, on the other hand, slipped on a rock and tumbled into the rapids. Without knowing how to swim, Elk knew he wouldn't be able to save his brother by jumping in--but despite racing to the riverbank and following the river as far as he could, Elk couldn't find his brother anywhere, and was forced to accept the fact that Pansy had most likely drowned in the river. With Pansy's death, so died Elk's hopes that Abby and Quincy were still out there, that Whinchat was managing okay on her own, and that Elk would ever meet his father and join a clan. With his entire family gone, Elk knew he could only depend on himself now.

loner life | 6-43 ☾
Elk spent all his time alone, the solitude causing him to become quieter and more withdrawn. He was self-sufficient. He had learned well enough how to hunt as a kit, able to catch enough to eat even if he still went hungry some days. He could remember poignantly what he had told his siblings before abandoning their den:  that there was a difference between surviving and thriving. He had wanted to thrive--he had wanted to thrive with his brother and sister at his side, and the loneliness made him bitter. He travelled often, not staying in one place too long before he was on the move again, and soon he was living in the wilderness close to a Twolegplace, hunting the pests that irritated the massive, tall creatures and sleeping in garden bushes and under sleeping monsters.

It was impossible to deny that Elk was lonely--so when he met a kittypet named Mini, he took to her quickly, relieved to finally have someone in his life he could speak to, even if it was challenging to open up to her. Elk had spotted the pretty tortoiseshell she-cat while sneaking through her Twolegs' garden, sitting in her window in the nest and watching him--and instead of being social, he had hurried away and retreated back to the forest. After a few more days, he returned to see her again, and finally, he climbed the nearest stable foliage to greet her when she seemed to react kindly to his appearance, introducing himself as Elk and properly making her aqcuaintance.

Elk didn't go see the kittypet every day, but he tried to make rounds there every so often. It was good to have companionship again, only realizing the toll being completely alone had taken on him when he was with her. He told her stories about his past and she told stories of her own, though hers were mostly about her Twolegs and whatever strange things they had done this time. It was strange, the way she spoke of them--when Abby and Quincy had spoken of Twolegs, there was always disdain in their voices and vemon dripping from their tongues, but Mini spoke of her Twolegs as if they were her kits. Kits who hadn't opened their eyes yet and were very clumsy and foolish, as well. Even if he didn't like Twolegs, he liked her stories, and he liked the way her eyes lit up when she told them--and after a few moons of visiting her window and being separated by the screen between them, they confessed that they had feelings for each other.

Mini didn't want to leave her Twolegs and Elk didn't want to become a kittypet--but they wanted to be together, and Mini knew of a few kittypets that she spoke to outside the window that were allowed to leave their nests because they returned to their Twolegs often. Not knowing how else to accomplish this, Mini figured she would try a trial by fire, managing to dart out the door when her Twolegs held it open to bring their groceries inside--she was faster than her Twolegs, of course, and soon she was by Elk's side. The tom couldn't have been happier, finally able to nuzzle her and groom her pelt and take in her scent without the reek of Twoleg messing it up. She didn't go back to her nest for a week.

When she did go back, her Twolegs were determined to make sure she didn't leave the house again--it was the opposite of what they had hoped for. Mini had been sure that by returning, she would prove to them that she could be trusted, but Twolegs were stupid, and they figured she wouldn't come back if she left again. They made sure never to hold the door open too long now, leaving Mini no chance to see Elk again. She suggested again that he join her inside, insisting that her Twolegs loved her and cared about her, and that they would take care of Elk too and love him too--but he wasn't willing to give up his freedom. He continued to meet her regardless, even as he lost hope that he would ever get to be with her again.

As the famine struck the clans, it struck where Elk lived as well, as he wasn't as far away from the clans as he seemed to believe he was. Prey was scarcer and harder to catch, and he was hungrier and weaker. He visited Mini less frequently with his time mostly occupied hunting or resting, and when he did visit, she fussed over how much scrawnier he was becoming and pushed the idea of him joining her. When he declined again, she told him her Twolegs were planning to move nests--that they were putting all their belongings away and preparing to move away, and that she knew that was what was happening because it had happened before. Again, she urged him to join her family, but he refused again, still unable to trust the Twolegs after the stories from his family. He visited her a few more times, and then she was gone.

Without Mini, Elk decided he no longer wanted to remain in the area, travelling further into the wilderness, discovering where the clancats lived. He couldn't believe he'd finally found the clans, although they were in a terrible state. They were much smaller than he'd envisioned, and all the cats were ill or injured. The remaining clancats explained that most of the cats had left on a journey through the mountains, and that there was a better land there, and maybe it was the wrong thing to do to keep that from him just because he was a loner. He was grateful to them for telling him, and deciding to follow along and travel through the mountains alone.

To say it was dangerous would have been an understatement, but he had just one mouth to feed, not hundreds, and he had only himself to keep an eye on, not apprentices, or kits, or elders. Coming out of the journey just as ragged and run down as the clan cats, Elk was relieved to finally find the light at the end of the tunnel--the Fjords. As big a relief as just finding inhabitable land finally was, Elk still held onto hope that his father was alive, and lived among the clans. Though much of the Fjords looked inviting, Elk found himself dawn to the fields of wildflowers, trespassing in WindClan territory without realizing it. However, these clan cats were just as kind as the ones he had met on the other side of the mountains, welcoming him to come to their camp for food when they saw how ragged and mangy he was.

clan life | 43 - ... ☾
Nothing could have prepared Elk for what it was like to be within a clan. It was different to the sickly stranglers who hadn't made the journey. These cats looked tired and ragged, yes, but there was a glint in all their eyes that reminded Elk of a flame, and made him think again about his old saying--that there was a difference between surviving and thriving. Even if these cats were short on food, in a new land and exhausted from their journeys, they were thriving, and the energy was almost infectious. Elk wondered how long he would be allowed to stay, and wondered how to go about figuring out who his father was, still desperate for a family again--but when the leader of the camp returned from his own, private dawn patrol, Elk couldn't have been more surprised.

His small, cowardly brother had somehow survived the rapids and was standing before him some 40 moons later--and more than just surviving, he was leading the clan! It made Elk wonder who had been in charge to allow something like that, but he was proud, and he was overjoyed to finally be with his brother again--he didn't hesitate to consider Pansystar's offer to join the clan. Though he knew learning clan life and clan ways would be hard, nothing could make him give up his family again. He took the name Elkroot, and began his journey in becoming a warrior of WindClan.

About
Personality:

+ [ protective | resilient | patient | loyal ]
protective :: As an older siblings with two much tinier littermates, Elkroot is used to looking after people and very protective over cats he considers important to him. Even with his older brother as WindClan's leader now, Elkroot still sees himself as someone who should be looking after Pansystar.
resilient :: Elkroot has been through a lot; he has handled starvation and exhaustion completely on his own, losing the entirety of his family, as well as losing his mate, and he still manages to keep his head up. Elkroot doesn't let much keep him down.
patient :: Equip to being and living alone, Elkroot doesn't mind having to wait for things, as long as whatever he's waiting for actually happens--he also spent a lot of time sitting outside a certain kittypets window patiently as well.
loyal :: Though his loyalties are primary to his family and specifically his brother, if Elfroot believes in something, he is fiercely loyal to it. Though he wouldn't speak his affections as such, he would do anything for Pansystar as well.

= [ independent | bold | leader ]
independent :: Though his ability to function on his own has kept him alive his whole life, it doesn't make him good at cooperating with others, as he sometimes feels he could do things more successfully if he was doing them on his own.
bold :: Eventually, bravery can become a fault. Elkroot, especially in his youth, saw himself as something sort of invincible, and didn't shy away from danger or challenges. Little has changed.
leader :: Elkroot is a natural-born leader, having been bossing cats around since he was old enough to understand that Whinchat and Pansy were younger than him. Though a cat who can step up, stay calm, and make decisions is often good things, he can also be insubordinate when given orders if he feels his own way is better.

- [ stubborn | detached | ignorant ]
stubborn :: With Elkroot, it's often his way or the high way. Being in charge of himself his whole life has left him very unwilling to fold to others ideals, especially with something he believes strongly in. It is very hard to get him to change his mind once he has it set.
detached :: Due to having no one in his life for moons and moons to speak to, Elkroot has become very withdrawn and emotionally stunted. He shies away from touchy-feely conversations and avoids talking about his own feelings.
ignorant :: Growing up outside of clans, he is ignorant to many of their customs and has formulated his own ideas of what does and doesn't make sense. The idea of StarClan is the most ridiculous to him, and he can often offend others through his lack of understanding.Likes: warm, full dens, families (his own and seeing others interact), birds -- particularly sparrows, forests, the scent of wildflowers, Mini
Dislikes: too much open terrain (why did Pansy have to choose WindClan?), large bodies of water, Twolegs
Other Information:

  • Though Elkroot wants to find love again and start a family, he isn't sure if he'll ever love anyone more than he loved Mini--but he hopes he will.
  • The open plains of WindClan leave him feeling very exposed, and are definitely a struggle for the tom to get used to.
  • He still calls Pansystar by his loner name, finding it hard to get his head around the whole new one.
  • Because he usually needed to make the most of his time as a loner, Elkroot gets antsy when he has nothing to do.

Pansystar  | M1LK-CH3RRY | Pansystar is Elkroot's brother and his only living relative, to his knowledge. As delighted as Elkroot is to be with his brother again and as grateful as he is that Pansystar welcomed him into his clan, he does find the role reversal a bit weird, used to being the one in charge and bossing around his little brother.

Roleplay

Pebblepaw had a tendency to wake at dawn, a habit he had picked up thanks to his mother--Softstep rose with the sun, still on her warrior schedule despite how long she had spent in the nursery with her litter of kits, and then with Pebblekit. Even now that he was in the apprentice den without her, he was still used to her schedule. Rising to a stretch, Pebblepaw decided he might as well start his day, seeing as how he was up anyway.
Wandering out of the den, he could see that it was still a bit dark, the glow of dawn's sun only just peeking over the horizon, and while some warriors were awake, he knew it would be some time before everyone else was up. Dawn patrols were being organized, and Pebblepaw skirted around them, knowing he wouldn’t be invited anyway. What he wanted was some time with his mentor, his leader, and he shyly padded over to the cat after a few moments of hesitation.
“Hi,” he murmured, dipping his head politely at Meadowstar in hopes that he wasn’t annoying him at all. “Um, I’m sorry to bother you; I was wondering if... if you were free to do some training with me?” he asked, voice growing softer and more sheepish, but managing to ask his question all the same.
