[cry] - for his constant talking and griping

Breed: Balinese and American Shorthair
Mentor: Sunshimmer
Apprentice: NoneAppearance

Breed: Balinese, American Shorthair

|| Brief Description

| Mostly shorthair with some bits of scraggily fluff here and there, Hawkcry is a brown tabby tom. His stripes run down his back, along his sides, and down his tail, as well as around all his paws, though his forepaws have brown socks, and his hind paws have white socks. His muzzle to his chest, as well as the tip of his tail are also white. As a WindClan cat, he is fairly lithe and agile, though he has a bit of muscle on him as well. Hawkcry's feet are a bit too large for his body, but thankfully not enough to mess with his dexterity or speed. His fur is sleek and shiny, much like hawk feathers, and the tom usually wears a sour expression on his face, aside from when boasting about some great feat or accomplishment. His eyes are a mossy green color.

History
kithood | 0-6 ☾
Hawkkit was born the youngest of his litter, to Pigeonflight and Swallowheart. Being a senior couple having their first litter, kitting was hard on Swallowheart, and she rarely left the nursery as she slowly recovered from the ordeal. Once the kits were old enough to wonder the camp, they did so alone, or with their father, while their mother rested. Hawkkit's littermates, Fawnkit and Smokekit, were his constant companions and as kits, they got along quite well, spending most of their time playfighting or participating in other kit games.

apprenticeship | 6-12 ☾
Hawkpaw earned his apprentice name alongside his siblings, Fawnpaw and Smokepaw, and he was ecstatic to take the position. He couldn't wait to learn all there was to know and to become the best warrior in WindClan, aiming to someday become deputy, and then leader. He was assigned Sunshimmer as a mentor, and though initially he wasn't overly taken with the tom's cheerful disposition, he soon grew fond of his mentor. The long-furred tom was very positive, and praised Hawkpaw often, trying to be as helpful and kind as possible. As he rarely scolded Hawkpaw for messing up, the apprentice would often return to his siblings at the end of the day to brag about his great feats and all the amazing things he'd learned and how he'd totally aced them on his first try! He and his siblings grew more distant as he grew more boastful, but Hawkpaw just saw it as jealousy--he wouldn't want to be around someone so much better than himself either.

His apprenticeship was mostly peaceful until the day Sunshimmer and Haretail--Fawnpaw's mentor--had decided to take the two siblings on a hunting patrol together. They had split up into two groups to maximize how much area they covered, but they stayed close--close enough to hear the sound of the dog attacking Haretail and Fawnpaw. Bravely, the two had raced to their rescue, and though Hawkpaw's heart was pounding in his throat, he had raced to his sister's side once he realized she was stuck, struggling to help her get free while his mentor fought off the dog. Once she was safe and free, they joined the struggle, managing to scare the dog away with the effort of the four of them together. However, they didn't get out without injury, and though Sunshimmer was hurt, it didn't compare to Haretail. Sunshimmer had dragged the warrior back to came, but within a week, Haretail had succumbed to his injuries. Knowing that she must have felt guilty and miserable, Hawkpaw made an attempt to try and patch up their relationship--but Fawnpaw didn't seem to enjoy spending time with him as much as she did Smokepaw--or her friend, Birdpaw, and he withdrew again, not fond of rejection.

warriorhood | 12 - ... ☾
The rest of his apprenticeship had gone smoothly, and soon Sunshimmer would see his apprentice Hawkpaw take on the name Hawkcry, while Fawnpaw and Smokepaw were named Fawncloud and Smokefur respectively. Birdpaw became Birdwhisker during the same ceremony, and Hawkcry found she was the only one he enjoyed having beside him. Though he'd never spoken much to Birdwhisker outside of training or patrols, he found her to be very kind, and he was glad to hear that she would be joining the ranks of the warriors when he would be. The vigil wasn't too awkward either, despite his siblings, his eyes wandering to the pretty she-cat as the long hours of the night dragged on, and the apprentices officially became warriors under StarClan.

Things went off mostly without a hitch around WindClan, with Hawkcry stepping into his new warrior duties with relative ease. He didn't bother trying to patch up his relationship with Smokefur or Fawncloud, finding himself frustrated when his sister recieved her first apprentice before he did--but it wasn't too long before he had earned an apprentice as well, Yellowpaw. He probably wasn't the best mentor, but he wasn't afraid to tell Yellowpaw when she was doing something wrong so she could fix it and improve, even if he still took plenty of chances to brag about his own accomplishments all the while, often spouting off stories from his childhood, or saying that not everyone could get it on their first try like he had! Fawncloud's apprentice became a warrior sooner, as they were older, but it still left a bitter taste in his mouth to feel like he was lagging behind her. He unintentionally pushed Yellowpaw to improve quicker, but by the end of her training as Yellownose, he made sure she knew he was proud of her hard work.

Hawkcry's crush on Birdwhisker didn't go anywhere, though it was hard to talk to the she-cat. Birdwhisker spent a lot of her time with Fawncloud, and that wasn't exactly something Hawkcry was eager to do. Mostly, he volunteered to join patrols she was headed on so he could spend time with her, even if he couldn't find the courage to talk to her much. He'd never really been shy, but there was something about Birdwhisker that captivated him and the fear of saying the wrong thing kept his mouth closed practically permanantly.

Of course, talking to Birdwhisker was far from a challenge compared to what he had to face after. Soon, the water began to dry and the prey began to run scarce and the disease struck. It was almost surreal when their mother died, Hawkcry not quite knowing what to do or how to feel without her, even though they hadn't been especially close. Their father was so distraught and heartbroken that he stayed with her body and refused to let the clan bury her--a week later, he had passed on as well. It was strange to think that Hawkcry's family had suddenly dropped to only his siblings--his siblings who didn't even like him, at that.

The spread of illness eventually hit Hawkcry even harder, as Fawncloud's best friend, Birdwhisker, fell sick as well. Determined not to lose her, Hawkcry devoted his time and effort to trying to help her, hunting almost exclusively for prey for her, bringing her fresh moss when the medicine cat seemed overwhelmed by all the ill cats he was caring for, and grooming her pelt when it was mangled. Fawncloud was there just as often, and he wished she could have understood that he would have liked time alone with the she-cat he was so fond of, but in the long run, he couldn't say no to someone else trying to help Birdwhisker recover. Their combined efforts were not enough, however, and the she-cat passed on like many others had before her.

When Birdwhisker died, Hawkcry had laid beside her in mourning, along with Fawncloud. Rather than letting them mourn in peace, his sister had the nerve to question his right to be there--as if she was the only one Birdwhisker had been allowed to be close to, as if he wasn't allowed to feel regret for her too. They only snapped at each other until Fawncloud admitted that she had had feelings for Birdwhisker. Hawkcry had never suspected as much, sure that they were friends, and nothing more--and he'd awkwardly admitted that he'd loved her as well, flustered from getting his sister's feelings so wrong and worn out from everything around them. But Fawncloud still didn't seem to think he was entitled to love her, insisting that he'd never spent time with her, so how could he love her? It made his blood boil to have his sister try to tell him how he was allowed to feel, and things quickly dissolved into a fight. His sister resumed speaking only to Smokefur, and Hawkcry told himself he didn't care. He didn't need either of them.

After losing more cats to the illness, including his previous apprentice, Yellownose, the clans finally decided to travel to find a new land. Hawkcry didn't care whether they stayed or went. He didn't think their old home had any hope left, but the new territory sounded like wishful thinking. Hawkcry mostly travelled alone, occasionally seeing Fawncloud and Smokefur among themselves in the crowd of cats. When he felt most alone, he felt bitter about it, wondering what he had done so long ago to push them so far away--but he wasn't about to try to make ammends with Fawncloud now, and if Smokefur wanted to choose her side without even hearing his, than he was as lost to him as Fawncloud was. It hurt, still, when Smokefur decided to stop travelling to the new territory with the rest of the clans. The brothers didn't say goodbye to each other, leaving Hawkcry feeling guilty and downtrodded with certainty that he would never see his brother again.

Eventually though, the journey ended, and they had found their perfect home. It was a miracle to feel grass under his pads again, and Hawkcry couldn't have been happier to finally have a home again. Life was good, StarClan had guided them to safety, and the clans could finally pull themselves together again. Pansyfoot became Pansystar and took over WindClan, a surprise to Hawkcry that he was too tired to do anything about--but when Fawncloud was named as deputy, he felt the familiar frustrated sensation. It seemed like he was always a step behind her no matter what he did and that she would always be better than him, whether to the clan or to Birdwhisker or to anyone else. He wasn't about to give up on his dream of being deputy or leader though, sure something would go his way at some point.
About
Personality:

brave :: ready to face and endure danger or pain; showing courage.
Hawkcry has proven his bravery a few times over, particularly when rescuing his sister from a dog attack. He isn't always the strongest or the fastest, but he'll charge into danger head-on to help a clanmate.
responsible :: having an obligation to do something, or having control over or care for someone, as part of one's job or role.
One thing no one can criticize Hawkcry for is his work ethic, always doing his best to look after things when he needs to and rarely caught not doing clan duties. He also takes the failure or success of the week to see

solitary :: done or existing alone.
As his siblings have drawn away from him and the only other cats he's been close to or trusted have passed, Hawkcry can be a bit of a loner. He isn't apposed to company, but he doesn't tend to seek it out, and it doesn't often seem to seek him out, either.
shy :: being reserved or having or showing nervousness or timidity in the company of other people.
Though shyness certainly seems to contrast other personality traits of Hawkcry's, it is very selective. He can march up to most cats and brag about what he's done or make conversation without worrying. However, when it's with a cat who's opinion he holds in high esteem (or a pretty she-cat), Hawkcry seems to clam up, to the point where he has trouble approaching her all together.

boastful :: showing excessive pride and self-satisfaction in one's achievements, possessions, or abilities.
Since his apprenticeship with Sunshimmer, Hawkcry has been very quick to brag about his accomplishments. He is proud of what he does, and proud of how well he does them--and unafraid of discussing this with others, as well. He definitely thinks he is one of WindClan's most valuable warriors.
rash :: displaying or proceeding from a lack of careful consideration of the possible consequences of an action.
The negative side of bravery; because Hawkcry is so quick to charge into situations, he often doesn't consider the consequences. So far, nothing has backfired too extremely, and for that, he's greatful--but likely, until something goes wrong, he won't change his ways.
grumpy :: bad-tempered and sulky.
Especially in the presence of Fawncloud, Hawkcry can become very negative and bitter. Though he isn't always pessimistic, he is more often than not, and sometimes feels he needs more time to himself than his clan offers.Likes: birds, feathers, very light drizzling rain, the warmth of the warrior's den
Dislikes: Fawncloud, monsters, snow, mud, swamps

Pansystar  | M1LK-CH3RRY  | leader
Hawkcry was surprised when Pansystar was named to take over the clan, because he always saw Pansyfoot as a bit cowardly--not to mention the fact that he wasn't born in WindClan. Still, he is loyal to him, as WindClan's leader, and will be unless the tom proves himself unworthy.

Fawncloud  | StabbytheUnicorn | deputy, sister
Fawncloud and Hawkcry are on terrible terms these days, although it's been a long, long time since they were on good terms. Hawkcry hates that she believes he couldn't have loved Birdwhisker, because how can she know his feelings better than him? It's an added frustration that she was named deputy and now has superiority over him. He does his best to avoid her, constantly frustrated by her if not.

Smokefur | NPC | brother | status unknown
Hawkcry hates that his brother stayed behind in the mountains with Thicketstar. Outwardly, he claims that he finds his brother's actions cowardly and weak, but in reality, the abandonment stings--even if he and his brother weren't that close. He wishes he could have done more to encourage Smokefur to continue along with them, often wondering whether or not he's even still alive.

Birdwhisker | NPC | love interest | deceased
Birdwhisker was the cat Hawkcry was in love with, though they never became mates, and Hawkcry didn't spend a lot of time with her until she fell ill. Still, he very firmly believes he loves her, and misses her greatly.

Pebblepaw had a tendency to wake at dawn, a habit he had picked up thanks to his mother--Softstep rose with the sun, still on her warrior schedule despite how long she had spent in the nursery with her litter of kits, and then with Pebblekit. Even now that he was in the apprentice den without her, he was still used to her schedule. Rising to a stretch, Pebblepaw decided he might as well start his day, seeing as how he was up anyway.
Wandering out of the den, he could see that it was still a bit dark, the glow of dawn's sun only just peeking over the horizon, and while some warriors were awake, he knew it would be some time before everyone else was up. Dawn patrols were being organized, and Pebblepaw skirted around them, knowing he wouldn’t be invited anyway. What he wanted was some time with his mentor, his leader, and he shyly padded over to the cat after a few moments of hesitation.
“Hi,” he murmured, dipping his head politely at Meadowstar in hopes that he wasn’t annoying him at all. “Um, I’m sorry to bother you; I was wondering if... if you were free to do some training with me?” he asked, voice growing softer and more sheepish, but managing to ask his question all the same.
