History

kithood | 0 - 6 ☾

Born in a litter of three, Sunkit was named to reflect the hopes of his family. His parents, Crowfleck and Dustfeather, had had two other kits--but only one survived. As one would expect, this devastated his parents--and so, they named him Sunkit, placing all their hopes in him and hoping that he would bring the light back and help them find happiness again. They also put all their love and care into him, and luckily, he remained healthy.

Sunkit grew up in a large nursery--Emberbelly's litter was only two moons ahead, and Dusktail's litter was born in the same week. Sunkit liked the companionship of having so many people his age to interact with, since he didn't have siblings his own age--but his favorite cat to spend time with wasn't a regular in the nurery. The first face he'd seen when he'd opened his eyes; his older brother, Frostbite. Sunkit loved Frostbite, and loved spending time with him. It did distance him a bit from the other kits, but Frostbite was his priority, regardless. Not really understanding the ethics of it, he hoped that Frostbite would be his mentor when he was old enough, and sometimes shared such ideas with his companions in the nursery.

Although not everyone in the nursery became apprentices at the same time--Specklekit was the first, with her brother, Copperkit having to wait due to kitten cough. But Stormkit, Leafkit, Copperkit, and Sunkit all got the chance to sit together under Reedstar's call as they were given mentors. apprenticeship | 6 - 12 ☾

Sunkit became Sunpaw, and he was assigned to Amberleaf as his mentor. Amberleaf was a senior warrior--in fact, Specklepaw was being mentored by her son, Morningflame, but Sunpaw wasn't the type to judge on that sort of thing. Amberleaf had experience under her belt, and Sunpaw enjoyed training with her--but at the same time, Amberleaf was clearly still struggling with her missing daughter, and Sunpaw, already on the back pedal thanks to being smaller and weaker than most his age, could have used more time with his mentor than she was able to give.

Before a moon of his apprenticeship had even passed, however, things changed. There was a skirmish with rogues along WindClan's border, and Crowfleck tragically died of his injuries from the fight. Dustfeather survived, but the wounds from the fight got infected, and the infection spread quickly. Sunpaw's presence in the medicine cat den by her side didn't change anything--the infection killed her faster than anyone expected, and Sunpaw felt completely broken without his parents.

In the back of his mind, he knew his parents, and his brother, Frostbite, had had a happy life before he was born. His two siblings who hadn't survived had been the first of the sadness he had brought them--and now, they were in StarClan with them, too. A nagging voice in his head said that it was his fault. Despite his name, Sun... despite the fact that they had named him in hopes that he would bring them happiness, it seemed from birth, Sunpaw brought only pain. He felt guilty when he saw Frostbite, but scared, too. His brother must know--his brother must hate him.

But he didn't. No one was there for him more during his pain than Frostbite, and though he felt awful about everything, Sunpaw did his best to be there for Frostbite, too. They had lost most of their family, but they still had each other. Frostbite had always been Sunpaw's favorite, but now, he was his whole family, and he cherished the older cat for that.

The pain of their loss never really went away, but warrior life had a way of forcing you to move on, and so, Sunpaw did his best.

Although he was doing his best, Sunpaw was lagging behind the other apprentices. Amberleaf was doing the best she could, but she wasn't in the best state to mentor an apprentice, and Sunpaw wasn't in the best place, either. Until Frostbite took it upon himself to take up mentoring Sunpaw whenever the two both had free time. Sunpaw spent the rest of his free time asleep, consequently, exhausted from using up all his energy, but he and Frostbite understood each other more than anyone else did. Frostbite knew his better than ayneone else--he knew the best way to teach him, to encourage him, to critique him. And suddenly, after three moons of struggling to keep up, Sunpaw could contend with the other apprentices his age.

Until the day came he could actually contend with his brother, at least once. The next day was his warrior assessment, and Sunpaw was positive that without Frostbite's careful and constantly tutilage, he wouldn't have passed with flying colors the way that he did.warriorhood | 12 - ... ☾

Sunshine.

He was honored to receive a name with so much warmth--so much brightness. He didn't know if he truly felt worthy of it. But no voice chanted his name more loudly than Frostbite's, and that alone made him hold his head up high as he became a full warrior of WindClan.

Of course, becoming a warrior didn't make his life suddenly easier. Since early into his apprenticeship, Sunshine had been struggling with another cat in the clan--one who always seemed to have a clever crack to make about him. When he was young, Sunshine had done his best to laugh it off, but as time went on, it grated on him more and more and more, until it was getting hard to cope with. As warm and encouraging as Frostbite was to him, the other cat could tear down his confidence with a few words. It was hard--it felt like Sunshine was already battling the reminder that it was his fault his family had come to such misfortune. To hear cruel comments about his hunting, his fighting, his speed, his stealth--it didn't matter what. It really tripped him up and beat him down. He felt sure the other tom didn't mean anything terribly mean-spirited by it, and so he kept quiet about how he felt for a long time, until finally, he confided in his brother about it. Frostbite had promised to take it up with Reedstar, but their elderly leader hadn't seemed to care to do anything about. Sunshine wasn't surprised; Reedstar hadn't seemed all there in a long time. She probably didn't even understand what Frostbite was complaining about. Sunshine assured his brother he would be able to cope fine.

Things had been going badly for a long time, during his whole apprenticeship, for all the clans. SkyClan got sick, and slowly every clan had cats falling ill. Goosetooth and Snailpaw were overworked trying to keep cats alive. Aside from disease, prey was only growing more scarce by the moon, as more and more hunting patrols came back empty-handed. The river dried up, and then, impossible as it seemed, the lake dried up. Snailpaw received a prophecy from StarClan, and within less than a moon, the clans were going on a journey to find a new home.

It felt impossible, but Sunshine had to keep fighting, for his own sake, and for Frostbite, who had invested so much in him.

And somehow, there was light at the end of the tunnel. After six long, hard moons, the mountains parted and revealed the fjords to the clans. WindClan took new territory, but the moment was bittersweet, as Reedstar's last life finally gave out shortly after settling there. With Moorfog taking over as Moorstar and the announcement that StarClan had not followed them through the mountains, life seemed as daunting as ever to Sunshine--but as always, he was determined to stay strong, for Frostbite, if for no one else.

About
Personality:

+ dutiful, cooperative, humble

Sunshine doesn't think he's the best warrior by any means, but he is absolutely a hard-working one. Never one to choose relaxing over working, Sunshine only really takes a break when he has to. He gets along well with everyone in WindClan as well, and never tries to be the best in the group--why be a glory-hound when you can just all work together? Besides that, even when he is praised, Sunshine rarely takes the praise, shrugging most things off with a quiet thanks of humility. He might not stand out in a crowd, but he's working hard to ensure the crowd is working as perfectly as it can.

> naive, intense, soft

Despite having actually been through quite a bit of hardships, Sunshine still has an air of innocence and naivety to him. Traveling with the other clans for so long has made him more receptive than ever of the diplomatic, blood-free solution, and while some might say that makes him a bit soft, Sunshine has really never been partial to the rougher parts of being a warrior. But in his own way, he is still intense, although it's mostly all internal. He frets over little things and blows them up in his head, often making mountains out of molehills.

-  pessimistic, self-depreciative, subdued

The hardships of Sunshine's life have done a number on him at the same time. He tends to expect the worst to happen, simultaneously aware that if the worst does happen, it's most likely his fault. Even the idea of living up to his name feels daunting at times. Over time, he has become more submissive to others, and subdued, rarely speaking up unless he feels he has something to say. He does his best to contribute and be helpful but when things do go wrong, he's the first to blame himself for it.

Likes: frostbite, running until his lungs hurt, being the first pawprints in a fresh, thin layer of snow, catching rabbits, the moors at sunrise
Dislikes: himself, bright hot green-leaf days, cracked paws, getting wet, letting others down (especially frostbite)

"They must have so much on their plate, with everything going on now--and StarClan... I'll do my best not to add to their burdens."

Rosethorn | CitrineCitrus | Deputy
"I can't imagine how stressful it is to be in her shoes at the moment. I'll keep working hard so the slack doesn't fall on her."

After everything we've gone through together, all I can do is thank him for staying by my side through it all. Genuinely, I don't know where I'd be without him..."

Roleplay

Bennet couldn't die--he couldn't die here, by Nicchia's hand or Ernest's or Aurelius', because his purpose was far from over. He'd accomplished a lot, but not enough, no where near enough, and he couldn't let Nicchia snuff him out so easily like this. So no matter how many times he felt the burn of silver pierce his skin--no matter how many bullets Ernest shot him with, and no matter how much blood he knew he was losing that he couldn't replenish, he couldn't lose. He couldn't die. Despite his injured, bleeding hand and his even more freshly injured shoulder, he fought against her as best as he could, nails digging into her skin and doing the best that he could to try and strangle her, even just enough to get her to loosen his grip. He didn't care about killing her now; he just wanted to get far enough away to flee until he was strong enough to get rid of her permanently. If he could just get her off of him, if he could just get her to loosen her grip for a second --

He didn't have the air to hiss as his hands were tugged away from Nicchia's neck, realizing after a second it was Aurelius pulling them away; the hands were too soft and delicate to be Ernest's and Nicchia were very clearly still pushing him down under the water. He couldn't get Nicchia off of him if Aurelius had his hands, so he turned his struggled on Aurelius instead, scratching at the man's chest and neck to try and get him to stop. Despite the water, he could still hear Aurelius speak--muffled, but clear enough to understand.

"Stop struggling."

Bennet could feel the fight starting to leave him at those words; he didn't know if it was Aurelius' influence, or his body starting to give out. Either way, his lungs were burning and it was harder to fight Nicchia's strength. He didn't want to die, he was scared to die--and he stopped scratching at Aurelius' neck, letting the man's hand's pull his away, and instead curling his fingers around his. He was scared, and maybe Aurelius wouldn't have wanted to give him comfort, but Bennet was still selfish, and he wanted it. He weakly squeezed his hands, taking some small comfort as Aurelius squeezed them back. He could still hear him faintly, trying to relax and listen to him.

"Quies."

By the time Nicchia pulled him out of the water again, he didn't have the strength to cough up the water in his lungs. His head was spinning from lack of oxygen--her words were somewhat lost on him. It was hard to listen to them, and the moments he managed to process were literally hard to hear. He didn't want what she was saying to be true; he didn't want to die forgotten. He didn't want his life to be meaningless. He didn't want to be erased from history. More than anything, he didn't want Aurelius to be the one helping her kill him. He didn't want Aurelius to hate him the way Nicchia hated him, but there was no strength left to speak to him and no time left to fix it. His lips shook as he tried to speak, but he couldn't even breathe, head starting to get too foggy to hear the end of what she was saying.

But Aurelius was still squeezing his hands, and that was about all he could process anymore.

A last comfort.
