The Vara class was a class of six heavy cruisers in service with the Vloskovian Navy during the 1930s and 40s. The first ship was laid down in 1934 and launched in 1936. Vara entered service in August 1936 following a month of sea trials. She was followed by five other ships: Stålberg, Skandia, Rinnasund, Berkhof, and Nakanhof. Each ship was named after a Vloskovian town or city.The ships formed three cruiser divisions (Kryssareskvadron), each made up of two Varas and two light cruisers. The 14th Kryssareskvadron, led by Nakanhof, is noted for being the first unit to engage the Kriegsmarine on 8th July 1940, the first day of Vloskovia's entry into the Second World War.
Each Vara was armed with eight 203mm main guns arranged in four turrets with six 120mm dual-purpose secondary guns in three turrets. They were also equipped with twelve torpedo launchers, each capable of firing the long-range Typ 36 oxygen torpedo. Anti-aircraft weaponry consisted of twenty-five 20mm autocannons and four 12.7mm machine guns. In 1940, this was upgraded to include six twin 40mm Bofors guns and one quad Bofors. Also in 1940, it was decided to convert Rinnasund into an aircraft carrier in order to increase the Navy's aviation capability.
In 1944, their original masts were replaced with ones equipped with more modern radar systems, giving the ships a longer detection range for both aircraft and surface targets.
The ships served throughout the war, seeing much action. In 1940, Berkhof and Nakanhof engaged a German convoy sailing to Vloskovia, sinking it. They then came under attack from aircraft but escaped with minor damage. In 1942, Vara and Stålberg were part of the force that was sent to engage the German battleship Tirpitz, which was on its way to attack a convoy sailing to the USSR. Vara was sunk during the battle. Tirpitz was later sunk by Vloskovian battleships and aircraft. After the loss of Vara, the remaining four ships were reorganised into the 18th Cruiser Division (KS18). The KS18 supported the 1944 Vloskovian invasion of Norway, with Skandia covering the landings at Narvik and Nakanhof supporting Trondheim.
In October 1944, the largest naval battle in Europe took place in the North Sea when a Vloskovian fleet engaged the remaining German large ships. Stålberg, Skandia, Berkhof and Nakanhof all participated in this battle. Berkhof was sunk by the un-named German battleship H39.
In 1945, KS18 once again covered Vloskovian landings, this time in Denmark. After the defeat of Germany, the Vloskovian fleet sailed to the Pacific, where KS18 participated in the liberation of Kiroi, a Vloskovian island territory in the south Pacific which had been occupied by Lukanyan forces since 1942.
Later that year, KS18 joined the massive Allied fleet consisting of ships from the US Navy, Royal Navy, Imperial Japanese Navy, Royal New Zealand Navy, Royal Australian Navy, French Navy, and Vloskovian Navy in the war against Lukanya. In late 1945, Rinnasund was hit and sunk by Lukanyan bombers. In 1946, Nakanhof was also attacked by Lukanyan jet bomber aircraft near the Ōjin Island chain, south of Lukanya. The ship was heavily damaged and managed to sail towards the islands before running aground on Ōjinshima, bringing an end to her career. Nakanhof was the most decorated ship in the Vloskovian Navy during the war.
By the time of the Lukanyan surrender in 1947, only two ships were still afloat. Stålberg and Skandia returned to Vloskovia in 1948, where they stayed in service until 1954. Both were scrapped in the following years. Nakanhof, while still largely intact, was deemed damaged beyond repair and was scrapped in Lukanya.
