Description
A bunch of doodles I created for my recent Disabilities in Prehistory video ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7J_oy… ). These individuals are of individuals throughout history that displayed physical handicaps or disabilities for their respective time periods and cultures. From Left to Right:
Romito 2 ~ 11,000 years ago
The remains of Romito 2 were discovered in a cave in a mountainous region in southern Italy. The remains belonged likely to an adolescent male (17-20 years old). One of the most interesting aspects of R2 was the fact he possessed a case of chondrodystrophic dwarfism (the earliest known in history) which caused his limbs and overall height to be rather short. His physical appearance would have been a hindrance to his society's role as hunter-gathers; however despite his disposition he lived for a relatively old age meaning his community tolerated and provided care for him.
(inspired somewhat by the Hunter x Hunter character of Feitan)
Burial 223 - died c. 1400–1540 CE
The rather curious and unique remains of a women were buried in a Native American burial mound in Northwestern Georgia at the King site. She belonged to the Late Mississippian culture and was buried with traits characteristic of extremely high military honors in her respective society. The burial objects she possessed suggest a life filled with great acts of military valor and victories that are typically exclusively reserved for men typically around the age of 40 years old. This women was around 25 years old at her death and appears to have developed a hip-deformity likely gained through giving child birth. It appears this warrior woman overcame many odds and dispositions in her lifetime and because of this was honored by her society as a great hero.
Nandy (Shanidar 1) ~ 35,000 to 65,000 years ago
In a cave on a lonely mountain top in Iraq, the remains of a 40-50 year old Neanderthal man was discovered. His body told of a lifetime filled with pain and injuries from a withered arm to partial blindness and deafness to a significant limp. Even the simplest of tasks would have been especially painful and difficult for Nandy, but his hunter-gather community cared for him and allowed him to survive a very long time. Nandy illustrates perhaps the oldest indisputable evidence of human care and compassion.
"The Date Girl" ~ 4,000 years ago
What I have nicknamed the "Date Girl" of the Arabian Peninsula was an adolescent girl that survived until the age of 18 years old. Evidence shows that this woman contracted a neuromuscular disease, likely polio, in her early life which caused her to be paralyzed. Despite this however her community spoiled her with sweets and sugary dates so much that it led to her possessing many cavities, something incredibly uncommon for someone of her age and of that time period.
