Maybe because the movies reinforce the idea of Neo being with Trinity so much.

:barf: Don't remind me, Trinity was such an awesome character in the first movie and in the other two she was simply arm candy for Neo. Honestly I was okay with Neo in the first movie, but in the second and third ones I down right hated him, there was nothing new to his character and nothing interesting about the fight scenes, seriously I get he's invincible can we move on now? Smith was a much more developed character.
