Description Yet another APH sketch, my third in 2 days - this series and its fandom is so inspiring!! Could it be I'm over my Artist's Block?? *_*

Anyways, peculiarities I noticed while traveling different European countries!

1) UK and Ireland: Left-hand traffic. As a continental, you'll keep looking in the wrong direction for the first few days and nearly getting run over all the time.

2) The Netherlands, or at least Amsterdam: The European capital of cyclists. Who also nearly run you over all the time.

3) Scandinavia (at least I know for sure about Sweden and Norway): driving at snail's pace on the motorway, and paying astronomical fees if you break the speed limit.

4) France: The kingdom of roundabouts. The simply love'em. And it's true they're quite handy, you can go round and round in circles while you check which one is the correct exit.

5) Germany: as opposed to Scandinavia, there is NO speed limit at all on the motorway! People bomb down on it at 200km/h or more... um, climate protection, anyone?

6) Poland: they never stop to let pedestrians cross the street, not even if there's a pedestrian crossing! Their motto seems to be, "It's like, totally too much trouble to stop."

7) Austria: The kingdom of road signs. We have at least 30 per capita, and many of them redundant, misleading or even contradictory!

8) Southern Europe: "Trafick regulashuns? Wassat? Can you eat it?" I can't even say which country is the worst - maybe Italy, Italians on their little scooters will kill you dead!!

Road traffic is a big adventure all around Europe

Yup... Its only the bus drivers, or the people that care about there driving, that actually drive safe. Its really annoying. -_-"

I am French, and I didn't know our roundabouts were so specific Xd that's funny

England...aw, yes, always little trouble when you come from France, I was almost hit by a car because at the pedestrian crossing, I was watching at the wrong side XD

Southern Europ: I completely agree. But in Southern France...well, be careful, they are places REALLY scary when you drive XD (but Parisians are crazy too XD)

Germany: I heard about it, but that's funny to know that's the contrary in Scandinavia XD

well, there is a speed limit in Germany, just not everywhere ^^
someone I know lost his license for a month because he went to fast ^^'
And yes, the one about the Netherlands is about right, but it is quite normal (at least in Amsterdam) that people on foot should be the ones to watch out. Same as the biker have to watch out for the cars....(doesn't mean I agree with that, people should always watch where they are going)

Anyway, fun little drawings. Put a smile on my face. thanks

The Dutch one counts for all of the Netherlands. I do it every day (I try not to, but pedestrians never listen when I ring my bell...) and it happens to me evey day (some people don't even bother to ring a bell)

Holy sh*t, are you telling me that this adorable & hilarious drawing has some accuracy about driving in Europe?!

Does the US finally have some sort of redeeming quality?!

I never thought that day would come...not to sound messed up about other nations, of course~! (we all have our good and bad points, right?)

...Canadian pedestrians must have it easier than everyone else.
...Or do they...?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

akabeko In reply to IceQueenMirrorQueen [2011-07-28 08:55:31 +0000 UTC]

It's a bit exaggerated of course, but in essence, yes, that's how our traffic looks like in Europe XDD

But from what I've been told by other commenters, the situation isn't all that peachy everywhere in the US, either (don't know about Canada, but somehow I can imagine it to be pedestrians' heaven XDD)

IceQueenMirrorQueen In reply to akabeko [2011-07-28 19:23:38 +0000 UTC]

That's true; it most likely does vary from state to state as well.

I'm from Cali, where everyone thinks they're excellent drivers~!

You either have annoying traffic (especially in hot weather!), crazy 'tard drivers, or drunken idiots.

Canada must truly be a pedestrian's paradise...

They all look so cute ^^
I really enjoyed reading your descriptions got me giggling the whole time.
Been once in the UK and couldn't got over the left-hand traffic -____-
Thing about Poland is too true, when there's no lights your reflex and speed are the only things that you can count on when crossing the street

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

akabeko In reply to sango11 [2011-07-28 09:07:37 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very very much, I'm glad you like them~

Personally, because I got my driving licence in Austria and here they are VERY strict on letting pedestrians cross the street (especially at a pedestrian crossing: if you ignore pedestrians and the police catches you, you pay a HUGE fine and get a few black points, too!) it's now kind of "in my blood". So of course when I'm driving in Poland I let pedestrians cross, and they always look at me all flabbergasted like they can't believe it XDDD

sango11 In reply to akabeko [2011-07-28 11:50:59 +0000 UTC]

Hahahaha,flabbergasted pedestrians, sounds lovely
I recently started my driver's education classes().Anyways,the students are the only ones that let pedestrians cross-becouse they have to- and pedestrians always take the advantage of them ALWAYS.

Hey, we aren't that bad X°D (I'm from Italy!)
Well.. in the South it's a nightmare >.> expecially all those scooters x.x
In the North we started having TOO MANY roundabouts; but the controls are really strict. Another big problem is the speed... we love to drive a bit too fast >.>"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

akabeko In reply to The-Manticore [2011-05-09 08:21:53 +0000 UTC]

Lol, oh no, I hope I didn't offend you XD Unfortunately I have had only rather shocking experiences with Italian traffic (especially in Florence, those scootery are deadly; Milano was quite bad, too) ...but maybe we from the north are just too wimpy XD

Ohh, so Francis and his roundabouts are starting to influence you? We don't have as many in Austria yet, but I actually prefer them to normal crossroads X)

Thank you much for the feedback <3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-Manticore In reply to akabeko [2011-05-09 10:16:44 +0000 UTC]

Haha, don't worry!XD
Milano is terrible x_x I hate it. I've been there two or three times and... NEVER AGAIN. Too busy.
If you think Milano and Florence are bad... for God's sake never go to Napoli. You'll find cars driving on the sidewalk and scooters with up to five people on them.

...maybe I don't really see the problem because I live next to Venice and there isn't that much traffic here X°D

Yes, roundabouts everywhere >.> even where there's no need to put one (three streets crossing? Oh fuck yes, a roundabout would be nice! =.. They're useful, but when there's one every 100 meters you start to hate them.

...somebody please take me away from Italy X°D

XD I can totally relate to your southern europe pic. I really suggest to not go by bus in rome. *shudder*

But actually the most parts of the Autobahn have a speedlimit, we just don't have a general speedlimit.
Not to forget this 'cute' law that you have to drive in a way that's "suitable for the traffic situation and environmental influences", which means you rarely can really drive in full speed. ^^"

"Not to forget this 'cute' law that you have to drive in a way that's "suitable for the traffic situation and environmental influences", which means you rarely can really drive in full speed. ^^""
Well, THAT'S always open for discussion and down to personal judgment in the end (hahaha, not.)

MathildasDoubel In reply to Jie-n [2011-02-24 23:18:27 +0000 UTC]

no it's more in the judgement of the police or the Judge if you cause an accident.
Actually, as long as the people are good drivers and old enough it's okay to let them decide how fast they can drive without jeopardise themselves or other traffic participant. They're adults, so they should know their abilities.

ahah that's true! in Italy, scooters will run you over ten times if you're not careful! here in Rome traffic can be pretty dangerous (not dangerous like in Naples, though). we're used to it so it's not much of a problem, but I've noticed that tourists always wait for an italian to cross the street because they're too afraid (with reason!) to do it alone! and I've been told they think we're crazy because we pratically throw ourselves if front of the passing cars, but I swear that sometimes that's the only way to cross.
