Description I recently saw this Monkey Island Flash video [link] which reminded me that for a short while, I was really interested in those games, and I was inspired to do yet another infamous piece featuring Guybrush Threepwood and his alleged twin brother/clone/double from an alternate universe, Roger Wilco.*

I'd imagine that if Roger and Guybrush met outside of their games (as various LucasArt/Sierra characters do, but only with characters within their companies), they'd have exchanges somewhat like this in-between sequels.

Here's a brief Sierra/LucasArts timeline for people who aren't familiar with the events that Roger and Guybrush are referring to:**

1987: Space Quest: The Sarien Encounter released
1988: Space Quest II: Vohaul’s Revenge released
1989: Space Quest III: The Pirates of Pestulon released
1990: The Secret of Monkey Island released
1990-1: Space Quest IV: Roger Wilco and the Time Rippers released
1991: Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge released
1993: Space Quest V: The Next Mutation released
1995: Space Quest VI: The Spinal Frontier released
1997: The Curse of Monkey Island released
1999: Sierra Online's "Black Monday", Space Quest 7 cancelled
2000: Escape from Monkey Island released
2003: LucasArts' Full Throttle sequel cancelled
2004: LucasArts' Sam and Max sequel cancelled
2003-2007: Approximately 30 Star Wars games released by LucasArts

*I've got to confess that I liked the Space Quest games a bit more than the Monkey Island games.

**And for those of you unfamiliar with the SQ and MI games, yes, those are the same two characters in each panel; yes, their hair changes color; yes, Roger goes from a 1950s slab-faced space hero to a blonde beanpole between games; and yes, that is a braid in Guybrush's hair in the last panel.

(And hey, this is just in time for "Talk Like a Pirate Day".)

EDIT: Hmm, the title in the image turned out to be a bit misleading -- contrary to what it might imply, Guybrush is the one on the left, Roger is on the right.

I'd take Space Quest over Monkey Island any day!
The thing that bugs me about Monkey island is...... NO FUNNY DEATHS!?!!?!! Oh, Aaaaaaaaaarrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhh..... (Thud)
(At least you can die in Maniac Mansion!)

Truthfully, I understand how having to save before doing anything could annoy some people.... not to mention that if you FORGOT to save..... you could end up having to redo HOURS of work! (This is probably what ticked people off the most!)

I still like the ridiculous deaths you can get in all these Sierra Games.

Truthfully I don't think they're that hard if you just remember the Golden rule of Sierra Games..... Save early, Save often, and DON'T overrite your saves!

I don't think so. I haven't played the remakes and don't have any plans to. It'd still a nice idea, though.

That's pretty cool. My clearest memory of roger wilco(I forgot which specific game in the series) is when roger gets pulled inside out because you didn't sweep the bad guy into the ice tray. Mucus(or something similar) monsters were pretty bad too. can never forget cheating in the space cadet test at the beginning. was it just me or was almost every single situation a life or death decision? Major props for various game over animations. My favorites from that era were One Must Fall, Duke Nukem, Commander Keen, Crystal Caves and cosmo.

Thanks!

Yeah, that scene from SQ6 isn't easy to forget. I think the other scenes you're describing are from SQ5.

As I said in the timeline I posted under the image, the Full Throttle sequel was cancelled in 2003, the Sam and Max sequel was cancelled in 2004 and approximately 30 Star Wars games were released by LucasArts from 2003 to 2007, so LucasArts has sunk to (or below) Sierra's level to some extent.

Ever since the prequel series, Lucas seems intent on drowning us in Star Wars crap.  Something tells me it's only going to get worse, now that Disney owns LucasArts.

Mmm Me like, Although Roger probably would be considered "rogered" since Seirra is dead and it's old games whored around by Vivendi.

But we'll just ignore that fact, Since I simply adore your stuff. ^^

I grew up with Monkey Island more than Space Quest....xD I only played Space Quest 4, for all I could remember...always die in the hands of those bad guys...
This is a good one, btw.....and yeah, the thought of Lucasarts making a whole lot of Star Wars games is a bit irritating...its other games need love too D:

Thanks. It seems my experiences with adventure games are somewhat different than most other people's. I never saw a LucasArts game until I was thirteen, and didn't become acquainted with them until I was twenty. Up until that point, I had been immersed in Sierra's games (which I first encountered when I was six or seven). It seems like most people my age have grown up as LucasArts fans.

Still, with adventure games being such an underrated genre, we're pretty much all in the same boat.

To be honest, I grew up with every adventure game there is in the 1990s...Beneath a Steel Sky, Pepper's Adventure in Time, Rex Nebular, Legend of Kyrandia, LucasArts' and Sierra's....damn, and I still remember playing Leisure Suit Larry series when I was 9 xD

It's sad that not many gaming company wanted to pursue a few good years developing this genre anymore....though I have to salute Microids for their B. Sokal's adventure games....they really sweat everything out....

I wished they would make more of this genre...because not everyone likes RPG or shooting games....

Wow -- you certainly played a much wider variety of adventures than I did.

And yeah, it's too bad there aren't many adventures being made these days. At least there are a lot of great amateur adventures being created, most of which are free to download.

If you've never played Space Quest, you don't know what you're missing! My brother loves Space Quest.

The Space Quest games are a bit like the Monkey Island games (except with a space theme rather than a pirate theme). SQ can be a bit more challenging and frustrating, though.

Awww, poor Guybrush!
But hey, Guybrush always was blonde! In "The Secret of Monkey Island" he was certainly blonde, as you could see in the close-up of him & Elaine at the very end of the game. Only in "MI2: LeChuck's Revenge", his hair was a little darker, but still a dark blonde.

Actually, in the original EGA release of MI1, Guybrush does have brown hair. Check out this image-intensive page - [link]

Similarly, Roger had brown hair in the original EGA version of SQ1, but both he and Guybrush had blonde hair in the 256-color remakes of their first games.

What the heck was up with Guybrush and Roger in 1993? It's as if they both were injected with temporary manliness, only to become weedy dorks again. (Nothing wrong with weedy dorks, of course, but the difference is pretty odd.)

I always wondered why SQ5 didn't have voices. Now I know!

Great stuff, as usual. The last panel is especially good; poor Roger needs more moments of smugness like this. And you're right - the Two Guys could have a field day with the new Star Wars movies.

Actually, if you watch the intro for space quest 6, Roger is wearing fake muscles.

Thanks! It's interesting that both Guybrush and Roger should both be at their manliest at the time of the release of their two most liked games (MI2, SQ5). With Guybrush, the transition is a bit more credible (now that he's a pirate, he's trying his best to look like a stylish one), but Roger's drastic change from a fairly average space guy in SQ4 to a Flash Gordon lookalike with highlighter-yellow hair is a bit much.

Here's a quote from Sean Murphy of Dynamix that clarifies the SQ5 issue a bit more (from the SQ FAQ):
"I can't say for certain; I seem to recall that we had actually started work on doing just that [preparing a CD-ROM version of SQ5]. I think that politics and the fact that Dynamix was going through a very rough financial period at that time prevented us from doing any supplemental work on it."
