In fact in the verse it is not a question of "father", like your biological "father" but of "priests" who are called "father" to the certain religious denominations that do it. In the Church of the Lord who is His Body, that is to say we "the saints" and not a building, are called "brothers and sisters" but the Father there is only One Our Heavenly Father , you understand?

It’s actually not true at all. God made the priesthood.

John 20:23
If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you withhold forgiveness from anyone, it is withheld." God is speaking to the apostles.

Matthew 16:19
…17Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by My Father in heaven. And I tell  you that you are Peter(meaning rock) and on this rock I will build my church and the gates of Hell will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.

That is clearly God making the priesthood and making St. Peter pope.

Hope this is helpful and also God bless you.

About the forgiveness thing, I'm not sure whether that is meant to just the Apostles or to every disciple.

But as for Matthew 16:19, it shows that Jesus gives Peter the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven - which could be real, but it could also be figuratively speaking, and also real but in Heaven itself.

But the term "Pope" is defined as "sovereign/supreme pontiff; Bishop of Rome; Holy Father; Vicar of Christ; His Holiness".
In Earthly terms he is a sovereign and supreme pontiff alright. And yes, a Bishop of Rome as well. These are all Earthly terms.
But "Holy Father" does not seem to click with how Jesus told His disciples to call Peter or their elders. It is written down by eyewitnesses that He said what the picture above states: "do not call anyone "Father" on Earth - other than your biological father - for you have One Father who is in Heaven." And yet "Pope" also means Holy Father (look it up if still needed be).
If Jesus said so, you and me believing also that He does not contradict Himself, then Pope is NOT what Peter was made by Jesus.
Yes, Peter was an authoritative character but for all I know Jesus never mentioned the term Pope - not in Hebrew, not in Aramaic, not in Latin, not in Greek.

So, in all love and respect my friend, how does Matthew 16:19 "clearly state that Jesus made Peter the 1st Pope", as you put it?

Catholics do not call a Priest "Father" in the same sense as that in which they call God their Father. A Priest, by God's Providence and by the authority of Christ, is a father in the spiritual sense, just as a natural parent is a father in an earthly sense. By administering Baptism he gives spiritual life to a soul; he nourishes that life by conferring the Sacraments; he warns, teaches, helps with his advice, corrects, and does all in the spiritual life that an earthly father does in the temporal order. So much so that St. Paul attributes a true paternity to himself, saying, "I admonish you as my dearest children ... for in Christ Jesus, by the Gospel, I have begotten you." I. Cor, IV., 14.

It means that ones final loyalty is to God. So while the Pope is God’s representative on Earth he is not God so I’ve the Pope says something that contradicts God’s law then of course we can’t listen to him. So basically Pope Francis is not acting as the head of God’s church should.

But everybody can be God's representative on Earth if they are truly reborn in Christ and cleansed of their sins, right? Or am I mistaken?

(and yeah, I knew that much about the current Pope )

Big-bad-Rocket In reply to Truth-lover3712 [2018-02-24 23:16:37 +0000 UTC]

Well God’s representative is the successor of St. Peter as God choice him as head of the church and if you trace the popes back they do lead back to St.Peter and his successor.

This might also help answer some question you may have.(If you do) Its from a radio Q&A.

372. Does Scripture say that Peter teas ever Bishop of Rome?

Scripture tells us that he was head of the Church, which implicitly demands that ie was universal Bishop, and it also tells us, as I have said, that he was in Rome.

373. How can you prove that he was the first Pope?

The word Pope means Father or Head of the Church as an ordinary father is head of a family. St. Peter was certainly in Rome, and died there as Bishop. By legitimate succession the one who succeeded as Bishop of Rome after Peter's death inherited the office of Head of the Church, or if you wish, as Father of the whole Christian family he was Pope. All the Bishops of Rome right through the centuries have belonged to the Catholic Church. No one disputes that. They are known as the Popes, and as St. Peter was first of that long line, Catholics rightly regard him as the first Pope.

374. If St. Peter was Pope9 who was his successor?

St. Irenaeus, writing in the second century, gives us the list of the Popes from St. Peter as follows:—Linus, Cletus, Clement, Anacletus, Evaristus, Alexander, Xystus, Telesphorus, Hyginus, Pius, Anicetus, Soter, Eleutherius. Eleutherius was reigning as Pope in the time of Irenaeus.

375. Was Peter told by Christ to establish a Roman Catholic Church?

He was not told to establish the Church. Christ established the Church, choosing Peter as the foundation stone. The Apostles were told to propagate the Church Christ had established, and of course according to the constitution given it by Himself. Wherever Peter went he remained Head of that Church, and as he went to Rome and died there whilst still exercising his office, that office is necessarily attached to the See of Rome. This was not by mere accident. We have to admit the guidance of the Holy Spirit in the choice made by St Peter in a matter of such moment to the Church.

376. We Protestants can equally claim Peter with Catholics.

Protestants cannot make that claim. Protestantism is essentially a protest against the Catholic Church, and therefore supposes that Church as previously existing. If Peter had not consolidated and built up the Catholic Church there would be no Protestantism to oppose it. In any case, Protestantism was unheard of until over 1500 years after St. Peter's death.

P.S. Thank you for keeping this respectful and polite. I appreciate it.

But you still haven't answered my question. Cannot everybody be God's representative on Earth, if they have Christ in their lives and hearts and repented of their sins?

You are right,of course. Everyone can represent Christ by living in imitation of his life and virtues. In this way they show forth Christ to others. However there is also a need to have a guarantee that , even with goodwill , no one unintentionally changes the original teaching. The role of the pope is really that of an archivist or librarian who keeps the same teaching as it was from the founding of the Church, alerting people to any misrepresentations. I am sure that you have noticed how many differing views there are from group to group and individual to individual. The pope cannot give his own personal interpretation, that is not his role. He simply checks novelties against original documents. All of this applies independently of his own personal failings, just as 2+2= 4 even if the Math teacher is a poor husband for instance.

Alright, so the pope thingy, you say, is based on what Jesus made Peter - the First pope. Correct?

But does that mean you can have all good faith that the Pope never lies or is never wrong?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Big-bad-Rocket In reply to Truth-lover3712 [2018-03-03 09:30:02 +0000 UTC]

The answer to the first part is yes, that is correct.

As for the second question. Well while the Pope is the pope is infallible in matters of faith and doctrine, the answer is no. The Pope is still a man and therefore can lie or be wrong. One of the Popes on a personal level didn’t believe in purgatory (changed his mind after his error was explained to him.) Another Pope (as we have said) is this current one. Some of the things he says is just mad.

Here is a bit of what Catholics mean by The Pope being infallible.

423. It is intelligible that the whole Church would be preserved from error; but you go further, and claim that the Pope is personally Infallible. It is the Catholic doctrine that he is Infallible when he speaks for the whole church in defining a question of faith or morals.…

427. Do you say that God makes a man Infallible who has to be voted for just like politicians?God says He does. But the Pope is not Infallible because voted for. He is elected by votes, and when elected he receives infallibility from God. The Pope does not derive his infallibility from those who elect him.…

431. If the Popes are Infallible, the laws of earlier Popes must be those of later Popes—yet the laws of the Catholic Church have varied. It is not necessary that all the laws of earlier Popes must be those of later Popes. Infallibility concerns doctrine, and morals, not necessarily discipline. Disciplinary laws adapted to particular times change with the times.…

436. If you are not obliged to believe all that the Pope says9 how say that he is Infallible? Because he is not Infallible in everything. He is Infallible only when he speaks in virtue of his supreme office as head of the Church on matters of faith and morals. He notifies us when he intends to define in accordance with all the conditions required for infallibility. This restriction…

Really? So, looking not at Peter (who was a disciple just like the others) but all "official" Popes, what is the essential thing about a Pope that makes him add up to the Church?
Or could we do without a Pope?

Big-bad-Rocket In reply to Truth-lover3712 [2018-03-05 11:03:04 +0000 UTC]

Yes, as the one to keep the integrity of the faith we still need The Pope.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Truth-lover3712 In reply to Big-bad-Rocket [2018-03-06 04:15:05 +0000 UTC]

Then, with all respect, if what the Pope is showing - and, mind you, has been showing for nigh 2 millennia - is to represent integrity of faith, I guess he does well in sharing his own beliefs with people and making them believe it. But if it is to represent faith in Christ the Lord, then I most exceedingly doubt its  worth. And that is a mild form of putting it!

I do not and cannot believe that a man that sits on a golden throne, surrounded by body guards (whose faces we never get to see or either don't look like bodyguards), with a golden staff, a crown with somewhat pagan-like quotations, and whose might is world-wide could be a true representation of Christ - therefore I cannot see how we need the Pope for the kingdom of Christ, which, as you may or may not know, is not of this World.

The reason why I argue this out, my friend, is not because I'm full of hatred towards the Pope - which I am not. But out of love and concern, because I cannot see how the Pope (generally speaking, based on the ones shown in history) can fit in the Bible other than a fraud, and seeing as many do believe what he says and his status, I fear for many souls that are so close to salvation but miss out on the TOP 1 necessity; which is to accept Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord alone by accepting what He has done for us and repenting of sins. Jesus is the ONLY way to God the Father, nothing and nobody else.

So think critically about what you believe, dear friend. I do it myself also, even if it seems like a given to believe it. Read what the Bible says about Jesus, then see what the Pope does. And then wonder,
"How true is this man - for a man he is - the Pope really?"
The Bible even says so; Romans 3:4 "hold all men for liars, and let God be true!"
That includes that you hold me for a liar; I could be wrong after all. Therefore, double check what the Bible says, alright?

God bless you dearly, my friend! I pray for revelation for both our sake, as much as is necessary for both of us.
